What do you see as the biggest challenge in your new job? I see a really big fiscal challenge, especially in balancing the budget. I’ve started looking at the budget. We’re doing quite nicely in men’s basketball and football, in terms of the sports being self-supporting. There is work to be done in Olympic sports though. Another challenge will be the culture change. Everyone will have to truly believe that it can be done. There’s a difference in talking the talk and walking the walk. Also, we’re going to have to match the resources to the expectations. There is going to be a high level of expectations, so the resources will have to match that. 7/1/2010 11:38:58 AM |

Wow. That sets the bar fairly low. A $25,000 bonus for a 4th place finish? A $15,000 bonus if all you do is place 6th? I'd be upset if our football program only got 6th place in an already weak football conference.
I guess I just have to remember where we're at currently. 10th-12th. Baby steps I guess.7/1/2010 2:15:19 PM |

^I think you are asking the wrong question. If incentives maxed at 5th-6th place it would be a low bar. As it is, there is a continuum of incentives from average performances to championship performances. I'd look at it more as performance-based pay than "bonuses" (lower base salary plus performance-based triggers). Ask yourself one question: Isn't it better to pay more salary for a 4th, 5th or 6th place finish than 11th or 12th? I personally like seeing a reward for fielding a competitive program over a laughingstock, rather than having no financial difference between finishes if a championship is not won.
Obviously championships are the ultimate goal, and the incentives should and do reflect that. 7/1/2010 2:25:31 PM |

Still fell 6th place is pretty low. Maybe an incentive for finishing in the top 3rd, nothing for finishing in the middle 3rd, and demerits for finishing in the bottom 3rd.
Of course we'd get quality ADs with contracts like that. 7/1/2010 2:29:39 PM |

Maybe its already been discussed, but what exactly would she do to get the football/basketball teams turned around that fast? Seems like it would be all on our coaches shoulders, and if she fires them immediately then our program would be shittier anyway for another couple of years. Guess what I'm asking is, what does the AD do besides hire coaches (aka search committee blah blah blah) and wags her finger when they do something wrong with the media?
I also wonder what those bonuses are for the head coaches if that's what the AD would get 7/2/2010 6:11:37 AM |

Getting our recruiting budgets up, at least at the average ACC level, in football and basketball is probably the most immediate thing she can do to improve those programs. Our budgets are shamefully low!7/2/2010 10:35:02 AM |

She mentioned the finances as something she wanted to focus on specifically for the nonrevenue sports. We have a VERY different situation than Maryland, in that we are pretty flush with revenue but operate some of our programs on the cheap. Kind of like the Washington Nationals a year or two ago. It's pretty disconcerting for fans/boosters that we have one of the biggest profit margins (surrounded in the rankings by bigger/more successful football/basketball programs) but don't have the return on investment. What we really need to do is to evaluate where we spend money and increase spending in some areas. 7/2/2010 10:51:32 AM |

Quote : | " Sent: 7/9/2010 10:49:42 AM Subject: Welcome- from a Class of 2008 alumni!
Mrs. Yow,
First of all, welcome to the Wolfpack family! I am excited about the future of our great university under your new leadership and believe that the future looks brighter than ever for NC State University!
I am a recent graduate (College of Engineering/College of Textiles 2008) of this great university and can honestly say that my four years at NC State were the four best years of my life. The opportunity to meet new people from all walks of life, and learn at a place so technologically advanced as our Centennial Campus, was truly a one of a kind experience. I truly had the best experiences, and made some of my favorite memories from 2004-2008.
My very first football game as an NC State student was on Saturday, September 4th 2004- a day that lives infamously in the hearts and minds of all the Wolfpack family. As you know, on that day two young adults made a horrible decision that cost the lives of two young men just outside the stadium. Word of the shooting spread like wildfire through the student section by the 2nd quarter and weighed heavily on the minds of all of us for the remainder of the game. Six years later, we still feel the ripple effects of that day around all of the Wolfpack family on game days. We have had tailgate restrictions in place for six years now, all because of two mentally deranged individuals who made horrible decisions. While there is no place for such behaviors anywhere, I feel that limiting the ability of the Wolfpack faithful to enjoy an entire day of the excitement surrounding game day is unfair, especially to us Wolfpack Club donors who pay high costs for parking for a mere five hours of enjoyment.
The game day experience is more than simply just the game. Ask any Virginia Tech fan or Clemson fan what it is like on gameday in Blacksburg or Clemson, and they will say it is like a religious experience for them! I am confident that we can make NC State a place with a similar atmosphere.
I respectfully ask that this issue again be brought forth and addressed in a way that will again rejuvenate our fan base, and allow us to maximize the time we spend with family and friends as we make the Carter-Finley Stadium grounds such an integral part of our fall season.
Thanks for your consideration and welcome HOME to N.C State University!

Kevin, Thank you for the email and welcome. Could you identify for me the tailgating changes that were made subsequent to the shooting that you believe should be retracted? I apologize, but I do not know about the issues you referenced. Debbie
" |
Quote : | " Debbie,
Apologies for not specifically referencing the restrictions. Since the shooting, tailgate rules have changed to prohibit fans from tailgating up until a mere 5 hours before the game. This makes it tough to plan when alumni are coming in from out of town specifically for the game, and doesn't offer much of an opportunity to enjoy the football grounds. Previously, there was no such restriction and students and alumni would arrive to tailgate in the mornings, and often times the night before, to set up tents, grills, etc. The atmosphere was fantastic. Instead of coming to Raleigh in the morning for a night game, fans have to wait to travel to get there at the same time. Not only does this take away from the ability to create a special college football setting, but it also helps create one of the biggest traffic log-jams on roads surrounding the grounds (Blue Ridge Rd., and Trinity Rd) on game days.
It has also been my experience that with the 5 hour restriction, students on campus would find other locations to begin tailgating, consume alcohol remotely, and THEN make the drive over to the tailgate grounds when the gates finally open. To me, this is a bigger safety issue than it is to allow students & fans to convene in the lots earlier.
The second main restriction is the prohibition of kegs on tailgate grounds. Although I believe this to be a distant secondary issue compared to the 5 hour restriction, there has been a significant increase in the amount of trash in and around the student lots over the past few years. More trash cans would certainly serve the student lot well, as students don't necessarily take the time to bring their own bags for their trash.
Thank you for taking the time to respond- you have certainly solidified my feelings that we now have a true leader of the Pack.
Sincerely,
Kevin McDonald NCSU Class of 2008 " |
Quote : | " Kevin, Thanks for providing the history on this issue.
I will need to take the time to carefully listen to the VP for Student Affairs regarding his rationale for the recommendation and also talk to Bobby and David Horning.
I promise I'll do that and review the whole thing during the season. I believe the time was extended to 5 hours. Sorry I can't say something more specific right now, but I like to fully review these kinds of concerns. Always bad form to be loud and wrong.
Thanks. Debbie " |

In my 4.5 years at NCSU(graduated in 2005), I emailed Lee Fowler 4 times, and the one and only time I received a response it was from his god-damn secretary and it was in reference to my family canceling their season tickets b/c of how shitty the game day atmosphere was the last 2 years of Amato's guidance.
Dr. Yow is off to a great start, and it says alot to me that she personally took the time to address you and seriously look into the issue you brought up.
I was on the fence about renewing my season football tickets this year, but after getting rid of Fowler, and an seeing some of AD Yows' efforts, I believe I will be renewing this year. Im starting to think she is/was the "right" person for the job! 7/16/2010 3:18:12 PM |
