It's not the first time I've heard that suggestion. I had an argument with a friend a few weeks ago about this. She's thinking about getting a greyhound for her apartment "because it will be easy." I have no clue what the hell she is talking about. If you want an apartment dog get a chihuahua 7/13/2010 12:37:01 AM |

Why can't a greyhound live in an apartment? They rarely bark and don't need much exercise. A young dog would need runs, but you can't get a good run in a back yard anyway. Greyhounds are sprinters so a daily walk is enough to tire them out. They're inside dogs anyway, being so thin they're vulnerable to heat and cold. Retired racing dogs usually don't know how to walk up stairs so keep that in mind.
A retired racing greyhound has less energy and would be better suited to an apartment than a younger one. Plenty of greyhound rescues recommend them as an apartment pet. ] 7/19/2010 10:19:17 PM |

Hi, Astral - are you still interested in adopting a Standard? I may have connections to several - depending on what you're really looking for. As for myself, I own a Silver Standard who was a rescue. She would not do well outside for as long as you're wanting to keep them out - They were bred as working dogs, yes, and probably back in the day would be fine. Now a days, they tend to be higher energy, and can overheat - especially in our summers. You can crate train your dog, as I've done - and she's perfectly content with being in her crate, sleeping until I can get home and let her out. You also have friends, your gf, or you can get a pet walker to come by and let them out.
They are very much manly dogs, regardless of their reputation. My girl is absolutely a guard dog and will attack someone who runs away from her. I wouldn't trade her for the world.
As far as grooming goes, I'm a professional pet stylist and could help you if you need anything. There are several options available that we can discuss for manageable coat options. 8/8/2010 1:32:53 AM |
