you're talking to someone that's been unemployed since an October layoff...I think being a barista at this point falls in the "dire" category

Being a frequent customer of coffee shops and having worked behind a bar with an espresso machine...I could never be a barista.

Afternoon barista might be tolerable, but never a morning one. You have to get way too early in the morning, and you have to be at your sharpest in the morning because that is when you are the busiest. A barista at a good coffee shop in the morning has to be on their game as much as a bartender at peak hours at a popular bar. And you have to make some ridiculous drinks. A complicated coffee drink is worse than making something like a mojito or an old fashioned behind a bar. The steps with the espresso machine and adding all the syrups/milks/etc are just a pain in the fucking ass.

And I think people are more pushy getting their coffee in the morning than getting their drink at a busy bar...they're usually grumpy because they haven't had their caffeine fix and/or they're sometimes late for work, putting them in an even worse mood.

Well-well look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?

^ Don't blame the posters in this thread. Blame the companies. Hell, I wish they would take "engineer" out of my job title so people would stop assuming I know how to do shit that I don't know how to do

In the professional world, "engineer" basically means scientific worker. There's also a push in a lot of companies to take the specialization out of job descriptions.

my business card actually says project engineer as the title. for what its worth, in reality my job duties entail:

-project management (HNIC for $250k-$3million capital equipment fabrication and installation, includes site visits, scheduling, setting billable milestones/making sure milestones are met/invoiced and monies collected, witnessing new equipment commissions, all around general go to guy for the duration of the project both internally as well as with the customer)
-design engineer (steel fabrications, spec'ing ventilation, motors, gear drives, mechanical components, etc)
-detailer (cad monkey)
-checker
-internal ISO auditer
-technical advisor to research and development
