well all the talk of getting paid made me think of this...and now that im about to type it out i feel weird about it.

when i was 14 i was at the right place at the right time and got contracted out to Milan Italy. I lived there for three months. I traveled between there and Munich Germany doing mostly small print stuff b/c, well, i looked so much like everyone in Germany and so different from everyone in Italy. However, while I got jobs I was a little too short and too "big" to make it anywhere good (ha im looking at my old comp card here- 5'7" and 35 inch hips is not very couture )
i then moved to New York where I was picked up by another agency.
i was homeschooled that semester.
I was paid enough where I only had to get 2-3 jobs/ month to cover rent.
and for the most part i did...there were a few times when i didnt get that one (or two!) and had to call mom for cash....

i stopped and went back to school after that.
high school was funner, i didnt worry about losing weight or walking to the next casting in heels or even making my own dinner

that being said, i picked the hobby back up when i ran into greg myers a few years back and it blossomed from there.
there are a LOT of paid jobs out there.
are they as "paid" as the gigs in NYC or Milan, no...but they're paid.
I have come across a few (three in particular) that are comparable to that amount though.

saying that all models (or even most) not contracted are not paid is a blanket statement.
there are several people around here who have been published.
book covers, movie covers, and general ads to name a few.

ps-i have some of my old port photos too if anyones interested
taken with film!!

That makes no sense at all. Most models are flat chested and if anything having bigger boobs makes you look like you weigh more.

But I know you're just trolling so Im not responding to you anymore.

WTF, guys, y'all argue for pages about what makes a "real" model...

And then Joie busts out with some shit that is totally fascinating, and nobody says nothing?

I know we're all supposed to play it cool and shit, but come on, that is awesome!

^?

By "girls," I assume you mean women, and actually way less than 1% of the women in Raleigh are models. It's way less than 1% in every city in America.

It still doesn't explain why you're being such an uppity snob about who is a model and who isn't. Everybody here agrees that the hungover woman in her own bikini who paid to have her picture taken sprawled out on a Mustang isn't exactly a model, but you seem to got something personal going on here with your disdain. Yes, their delusions are somewhat annoying, but they shouldn't inspire you to make absurd claims about the definition of modeling.

You claimed that only a person who is under contract and supporting themselves solely on their modeling income should be considered a model, and that is ridiculous. Your view is a bizarrely myopic reaction to a couple posers on Facebook.

Dated this girl during my time in NC, thought she was amazing.

She had a roommate that ended up in Social and was a huge joke for thinking she was going to "make it" as a "model"

Come to find out, ol exGF ended up in the same mag

I was all

Yeah... no. Done with photography for a while. The only thing I'll be shooting for a while would be a rifle.

And Bridget, you are taking JT's posts way too seriously. It's the mentality of a lot of "girls" on facebook that want to be famous and popular and all take those stupid myspace photos of themselves with a camera phone in their bathroom mirror. The "1% of girls" comment is a figure of speech, not an actual percentage; He is just trying to quantify and stress that there isn't a lot of models.

And the whole discussion of "who is" and "who isn't" a model is based on their training, pro or not-pro. There's a definitive line here. Very easy to spot them out. Completely different to work with. And what's with the model comment sprawling out on a mustang? Don't you ever see the car shows out in Vegas or any place in the world? Shit, playboy did a girl on top of a mustang what 2-3 years ago with a 'real' model?

I wouldn't put the whole "under contract" and "supporting themselves solely on their modeling income" to classify who is a model and isn't. It just happens to be were probably 2/3 of the 'real models' out in the world doing commercial gigs tend to do it full time and are under contract with some sort of model agency. It's kind of going the way of the dodo with social media sites and free alternative sites like Model Mayhem or OMP. But that also starts to complicate things and you get what you pay for, even if you still hire a model and pay them $$$ a day. The other 1/3 are probably part timers or people who do it for fun. One girl I met was based out of LA, she was an IT admin, worked for AT&T I believe. Drop dead sexy, couldn't believe she was a nerd, but she did side gigs here and there, mostly publications. I'd consider her a pro since she knew how to work the camera and knew the poses very well.

When a pro photographer hires a model through a model agency, they are paying for their casting, expertise and a guarantee that a pro model will show up on stage and know exactly what to do. The photographers I've worked with do that even if it kills their budget. They just know it works and why spend the time trying to find a model and have the uncertainty that they may just flake on you. Can't have that when a client is spending 60k a day on the shoot. Also, most agencies will train their models on how to pose correctly and will teach them which way to stand in terms of the main light. Contrary to what is believed, a lot of them sometimes know more about lighting than some of the shitty photographers discussed in this thread.

Most models I've meet have been very nice and humble, a few are bitchy, some are completely dumb, but all generally know how to pose and what to do when the photographer goes "action".

Yes, but the picture does nothing to support your argument. "Someone whom I know...etc" would have been sufficient. I would not post pictures of anyone I know, especially someone who is young and not a member of this site.

Kinda stalkerish.

ok, I lied, I'm not done with photography just yet. Had fun with shooting pictures and videos with this setup. :p

You are not a photographer until you strap a camera worth more than your bike, take turns almost dragging camera and have one hand on the throttle with the other hand pressing the shutter going into a 35mph curve at 75+. Weekend was fun at the gap.

took 50gigs worth of HD video, its sweet as hell of the ones I've seen so far. Most of my friends didn't feel comfortable riding within a few feet going into curves since I had a full frame camera with a 17-40 wide angle. So I fixed the camera on a friends bike and rode through 318 curves in 11 miles within 2-5 feet the whole way about 4 times.

I'll have to process the videos and upload to youtube tonight.

when I was younger I modeled.
Made a good bit of money at it as well.
IIRC, $70 an hour was normal for me.
I did a few tv commercials and a bunch of clothing catalog stuff.
that is all I have to contribute.

^^ Man you guys are all over the center line...

I realize you had plenty of vision, and 28 != The Dragon itself, but it annoys me when people are way over the line with no reason (cars or bikes). I was up there two weeks ago in my sports car and almost took a bike out because he was so far into my lane around a turn. Ended up with a tire off into gravel to avoid him.

Video looks good though, what camera do you have? Bikes looks so awesome in photography/video...even though I'm way faster in my car, the pictures of me on my bike look so much cooler
