^^First off, creepers are blowing up because they get too close to you. You should be able to hear this before it happens; sound was fixed today, so try that out. Just build a dirt wall or something and keep it well lit. That should keep them (and other baddies) out for good.

Sweet. I'll try that out. I was sad when they blew up my little house on top of a hill. So do you guys typically build a house then mine under it? I'm going to try that out. 9/23/2010 10:46:12 AM |

Never heard of this game until today. A few questions:
You have to connect to a server. Are you at the mercy of the availability of a server or can the game be played stand-alone? Sounds like there was a server problem recently, but people could continue to play offline. If there's an offline then what's the difference between being on and offline? Why involve a server at all... other than a patching mechanism.
I imagine that there will be more and more server issues as more and more people start playing the game.
I can't tell much from the videos on youtube, but one thing I can tell is that the ?mouse? sensitivity is waaaay to high for my tastes. I'd be spinning in one spot the entire time with those settings. Can that be adjusted?

^The connection to the server in alpha survival mode is just to download patches. Once you have the game you can play without an internet connection.
There is a multi-player creative mode which always you to connect to people's servers and just build shit.
The multi-player survival mode is buggy though and I haven't tried it out. Has anyone else?
I don't seem to mind the mouse sensitivity. It was spot on when I started playing. I guess it depends on a variety of things. You can always adjust it in windows but it's a hassle each time you want to play the game. 9/23/2010 1:57:27 PM |

do you all just build your base at or very close to your spawn point? 9/24/2010 3:43:43 AM |
tromboner950 All American 9667 Posts user info edit post |
I used to. I still have a base there, and I even built a small bunker on top of the spawn point itself.
My main base is now a house built on some land hanging over the side of a cliff, and it's across a good chunk of water from my spawn. I left a large supply of spare boats in a chest in my spawn bunker to allow for this.
I'm considering downloading an editor and just changing my spawn, since I pretty much never go back there unless I die. 9/24/2010 4:49:16 AM |

Except the game is pretty broken in SMP. I'm probably going to buy it tonight but don't see how no monsters and unlimited durability would be fun. Might as well just play creative mode.9/24/2010 11:26:13 AM |
EuroTitToss All American 4790 Posts user info edit post |
Exactly. I'm planning fricking lan parties and capture the flag games for when SMP actually works like single player. Until then, I'm leaving it alone.
^^I play the game with one finger firmly placed on the "f" key, which toggles the draw distance/fog

I don't understand why the graphics are so bad. The game engine is clearly capable of much more. I guess he's just a bad artist. 9/24/2010 4:34:14 PM |

^You're trolling right? Surely you can understand it's purposefully simplistic. 9/24/2010 4:37:29 PM |
tromboner950 All American 9667 Posts user info edit post |
^^trolling?
It's pretty obvious why everything is blocks. The community likes it, and it gives the game its own distinct personality/style.
Chances are the early builds were all blocks (probably intended as placeholders), and when considering whether or not to improve the graphics, Notch learned that people found the block-style endearing. So now everything is still blocks, including things that have no effect on gameplay (like the player model, enemy models, and the tools in your hand).
There's also the matter of the gameplay as it is currently set up needing clearly-defined units of terrain/material. He could change the system slightly to accommodate things like rounded hills and sloping terrain, but it would make everything a bit less clear/obvious.
And besides that, some people like running this game on low-end work computers and smaller laptops, and a graphics update could hurt some of them.
And it's probably just easier for him to develop in a lower resolution and whatnot.
...So, really, lots of reasons.

I think you missed the primary reason, which is just that a simple design aesthetic sometimes emphasizes elements of gameplay, instead of being so overly concerned with the modern snobbery that comes with having the top of the line graphics, which is obviously not something one man can do reasonably. The design is engaging and interesting, and the game is fun despite being so simple. Not everything has to be CoD:MW2 to be worth purchasing. 9/24/2010 5:04:45 PM |

darkone if you could build it out of Obsidian it would be amazing, but it takes a minute to mine one block of obsidian, and my obsidian mine on the server is waaaaaay down belong (I made a field of the stuff when I found an ocean of lava and a river closer by). 9/24/2010 5:05:55 PM |
