Our D-line will be tested heavily this game as well. They've gotten a lot of praise the past two games by the commentators. They can't take this game off and force our LBs and secondary to make all the plays.
I think what's going to be different this game is that their O-line will be mostly coming at them to open holes instead of dropping back into pass protection.
The question is: Will we get bulldozed by GT's O-line and allow running room? Or will we show up to play, hold their ground, and close the running gaps? Maybe even get a few tackles-for-loss. 9/20/2010 11:33:54 AM |

Our D has been great, but we are going to have to lean on the offense in this one. I wouldn't be surprised if the o/u goes over 65.
^ Our linebackers and dbacks MUST make their open field tackles. When GT is executing they are usually just one missed tackle away from breaking long TD runs.

how do you people make assumptions based on our teams from years ago? We couldn't handle Wofford 3 years ago so we can't handle GT with better personnel and a new defensive coach?
We were awful at open field tackles last year, but even in situations where people have caught passes in our secondary in the last three games, we've stopped them cold (if we've caught them).
It kills me how you use these histories to make assumptions instead of looking at how we've performed.
I think we can stop the run. 9/20/2010 11:59:32 AM |

http://www.jollygoodfellows.com/georgia-tech-football-how-to-defend-the-option/
Quote : | "...Now, first, to defend the triple option, you have to choose something that you’re going to try to take away. There are proven ways to stop any part of the option using different approaches. For example; squeezing the four down, shooting backers, corners, or safeties. The problem is it doesn’t take long for the offense to see what it is your attempting to take away, so adjustments are not really hard, which is partly why Paul Johnson looks like a genius. And he is for running this offense and being able to see this quickly and call a play to bring the defense back to honesty. So the first attempt to defend the option is to try to at least take something away. Be good at something or you will bleed out fast from the daggers. And that’s what this offense is, it isn’t a one hit wonder, not a guillotine, though it can be. Its basic philosophy is to stab you with daggers in as many ways as possible, until you die. Slow or quick death, it matters not.
Second, one of the best ways to defend the option is to identify the weakest player involved in the option. Usually for the teams I played on it was the B-back/Fullback, so defenses would focus on making sure that the B-back got the ball by giving the QB the read to give it to the B. The problem is that by doing this, the defense was often willing to give up 4 yards in hopes that the offense would get tired of running the same play (something Paul Johnson never does) or make a mistake in running it. A lot of defending the option on the high school level is about targeting weaker players and creating confusion so that that option is essentially stopped by the offense itself. The problem with this philosophy in college is that there are star athletes at every position, smarter players are not as easily confused and mistakes are more rare. Another reason why this system fits the Tech brand.
Third is what I believe to be the best option at defending the option and it has a little to do with strategy and a lot to do with skill. The hardest blocking scheme for our Wing-T option was always against an alignment that used a really good, studly nose guard who would shade (meaning the nose would shade the center to one side or the other)." |
GT got absolutely destroyed last year by Miami (really the only team who stopped them and that was with Dwyer et al) here's a write-up from that game:
Quote : | "MIAMI -- Jacory Harris watched Georgia Tech run over, past and around Miami's defense on the opening series of the game, barely showing any emotion on the sideline.
He saved it all for the field.
And Georgia Tech's hex over Miami? It's over.
What a difference a year makes. After being gashed for 472 rush yards in last year's meeting, Miami allowed just 95 in its 33-17 win over Georgia Tech on Thursday.
Miami Defense vs. Ga. Tech Last Two Seasons 2008 2009 Points 41 17 Rush yards 472 95 Yds per rush 8.4 2.4 Result Lost by 18 Won by 16
Cool and in control throughout, Harris completed 20 of 25 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns, and the 20th-ranked Hurricanes snapped a four-game losing streak against No. 14 Georgia Tech with a 33-17 victory Thursday night.
Miami scored on its first three possessions, built a 24-3 lead shortly after halftime and outgained the Yellow Jackets by nearly a 2-to-1 margin.
Georgia Tech (2-1, 1-1) blew Miami out a year ago, dooming the Hurricanes' conference title hopes by rushing for 472 yards. This time, Miami handled the triple option with relative ease, holding the Yellow Jackets to 95 yards rushing -- 60 of those coming on the game's first drive.
"We could never get them off the field," Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said. "In a game like that, you better maximize and we didn't. We played very poorly on offense."
Miami didn't.
Since taking a 24-0 lead against Clemson last Thursday night, Georgia Tech has been outscored 60-23.
"We just killed ourselves," Dwyer said. "We didn't play Georgia Tech football. I think we finally learned our lesson. We realized that if we don't go out here and work hard, we're going to get our butts kicked."
Georgia Tech ran the ball on its first 12 plays, quickly forcing Miami into a series of frantic substitutions. Eric Moncur -- Miami's sixth-year defensive end who was injured most of last season and was held out of this year's opener -- got a big stop on third-and-6, forcing Tech to settle for a field goal.
The Yellow Jackets ran for 60 yards on that drive -- and managed only 27 more the rest of the half." |

During the UNC game, one of the main reasons GT was able to move the ball was due to the UNC DL not tackling or even slowing down Nesbitt when they had a chance. Our DL will need to do a hell of a lot better than UNC's if we're going to win this game. 9/20/2010 1:29:15 PM |

the problem isnt that people dont care about sports, the problem is you have so many people that care about so many different sports/teams... Atlanta is a great sports city, its just spread out among 20 different teams; hell, GT doesnt even have the largest fan base in its own city probably. I've been to SEC or ACC kickoff parties like a month before the season starts and you will have hundreds of fans from every school there... also will have the college football HOF here soon
but back to the subject at hand... you will be able to find tickets no problem, if you are looking for 1-2 or even 4, but if you were wanting to get 10 together to sit with a lot of other State fans that will be a bit harder through scalpers

The best thing to do is put your DE in contain and have him git upfield. This takes away the outside pitch angle. The running must then stay inside with the linebackers or take a sharp angle backwards to et to the outside. The bad angle will allow the dbs and linebackers time to swarm to the pitch. If you don't contain the outsie, thats when big plays happen. If you use your linebackers to stop the outside, thats when you get picked apart because linebackers can't make their mind up in time and just get hit first.

This was posted on PP by a GT fan, FWIW...somewhat informative for those unfamiliar with their O(like myself):
Tip #1: We run what Paul Johnson calls the Spread Option (hereafter called the spread), not the Triple Option. The spread is a formation which includes some plays of the triple option variety, but also includes several other type plays such as midline option, rocket toss, delay, freeze option, etc. , etc. Sometimes we pass. I think.
Tip #2: If you really want to sound in vogue with the O, the fullback is called a B-back, and the slotback is called the A-back. The quarterback is still the quarterback, but you can call him Joshua, not Josh. That's a change.
Tip #3: Our QB buries himself so far under the center that he looks like a zit on his butt. This is so as to be hard to read by the D. He'll (and some OL, too, at times) hesitate for a count after the snap to get the DL read. This makes it look like some OL and A-backs (slotbacks) are moving early. They are not, so please save yourself the embarrassment your cousins in the Hole have endured and just understand, it ain't so. Actually, he's a very big, mean zit. Just saying.
Tip #4: Our blocking scheme is called the cut block, not the chop block. Please learn the difference. One's legal, one's not. It cost Frank Beamer two games last year. He complained about our guys chopping theirs when they lost to us, and turned in film, only to be told that the block he referenced was a legal cut block. He liked it so much, he instructed his OL to chop block UNC the next week and it cost them the game. He didn't learn. Please know that we practice this against our own players every week, and none ever get hurt. Anything to the contrary is propaganda from the Hole and the 'Burg just to justify their crying. They whined, too. You'll get laughed at if you do this... but you're too smart to do this, IMO.
Tip #5: Actually, we do pass. I was kidding earlier. We consider all those pitches Joshua makes to be passes. He has a 90% completion rate, and runs for over 1000 yards a season. We think he's a Heisman candidate, but not many others do. Just so you'll know when you overhear our conversations about it. 9/20/2010 6:56:41 PM |
