I wrote the property management as a consumer expressing my disappointment with the incident.
Here was their response:
Quote : | "Thank you for your email. Cameron Village is a family friendly shopping center that welcomes the entire community. We sincerely regret Wednesday's events and have arranged a meeting with Ms. Breedlove for tomorrow afternoon (Saturday).
Cameron Village and York Properties have no tolerance for discrimination of any kind and believe that all people deserve the right to be treated fairly in their work, homes and daily lives. The officer involved was immediately suspended. The supervising officer and all security officers will receive additional sensitivity training.
Cameron Village is committed to maintaining an open and welcoming environment for everyone.

So it sounds like they didn't intend to have double standards, and that it was the actions of a rogue mall cop.

York Properties also issued a statement about the meeting.
Quote : | "We apologized that the women were offended, and we affirmed that Cameron Village and York Properties have no tolerance for discrimination of any kind and believe all people deserve the right to be treated fairly in their work, homes and daily lives." |
they apologized that the women were offended? that's not an apology. "I'm sorry your feelings were hurt" is no concession.
and they said nothing about whether the guard's actions were wrong. declaring a "right to be treated fairly in their work, homes and daily lives" again says absolutely nothing about their own arbitrary behavior.
I hope the ACLU hammers them.10/19/2010 12:10:18 PM |

Burro was absolutely right on private property. If you own the property, you should be able to tell someone to get off for whatever reason you want. You also have to face the consequences when you lose business. A company that opens it's doors to all people will get more business than one that doesn't, all things equal.
None of that applies here, though. Discrimination is not the policy of the property owner. By lambasting a local shopping center without bothering to do your homework, you're doing more harm than good. 10/19/2010 12:13:56 PM |
joe_schmoe All American 18758 Posts user info edit post |
no, burro's not right about this. burro's a retard. and so are you, if you think that a shopping mall has the right to eject two women for expressing affection in a legitimate manner.
nothing short of firing the guard will be acceptable. this aggression will not stand, man.

Looks like we know where the difference between us lies. I believe that individuals should determine how their property is used, so long as they don't cause harm to other individuals. I believe in having a free society where individuals are able to make bad decisions and bear the full responsibility for those decisions. Alternatively, you support a police state, where the government has the final say on how I use my property, where we simply outlaw bigotry. You may fancy yourself an, "enlightened liberal," but make no mistake, you're the very opposite of liberal. You are a statist, through and through. Undoubtedly, every tyrannical government in the history of man has had pawns, just like you, spreading misinformation.
I do happen to think that the guard should have been fired.

If it was Cameron Village policy to do this, then fuck Cameron Village. I'm not sure it was their policy, though. If all they're gonna apologize is for offending the couple, and not for the actions of the guard, then fuck Cameron Village.
So even if Cameron Village isn't to blame for the incident itself, they're to blame for how they're handling it.
^^ ^^^ Quote : | "If you own the property, you should be able to tell someone to get off for whatever reason you want." |

Apples and oranges. I know that some of the people defending business rights may simply be bigots hiding behind property rights, but that shouldn't negate the actual rights.
If you own a property, you should be able to tell someone to get off for whatever reason you want. That being said, such actions should not constitute a pattern of discrimination, because that creates an unreasonable restriction on individual liberty.
Say some guy has his shirt untucked, and the property owner doesn't like it, so he asks him to leave. Then, some old lady's diaper stinks, and the property owner doesn't like it, so he asks her to leave. Then, some kids come in beeping and texting, and the property owner doesn't like it, so he asks them to leave. Then a couple begins to kiss lightly, and the property owner doesn't like it, so he asks them to leave. This is all okay.
But, say some guy is black/gay/atheist, and the property owner doesn't like it, so he asks him to leave. Then, some old lady comes in who is black/gay/atheist, and the property owner doesn't like it, so he asks her to leave. Then, some black/gay/atheist kids come in, and the property owner doesn't like it, so he asks them to leave. Then a black/gay/atheist couple begins to kiss lightly, and the property owner doesn't like it, so he asks them to leave. This is not okay.

Are we distinguishing between what is "right" or "okay" and what is legal? If you believe the purpose of government is to distribute morality, then there's no need to distinguish, but that's a dangerous path to go down. 10/19/2010 1:09:15 PM |

No... I agree it's not that. A ban on bigotry, for instance, is wrong. Bigotry is thought... free speech.
I'm saying that a pattern of discrimination amounts to an unreasonable risk of "harm" to individual civil liberty. Just as crossing the double-yellow line doesn't actually harm anyone, it is still wrong (and illegal) because it amounts to an unreasonable risk of harm to individual persons and property.
