I thought this thread was about bad U.S. cities, not boring towns. I'll throw my two cents in for DC. I've been several times and outside of the museums/mall/national monument areas its a shit hole. I've become enraged every time I've gone to the downtownish area (I forget what its called) b/c of

1) shitty construction everywhere
2) people that don't follow the cross walk signals (ie walk out in front of you when it tells them not to go)
3) The absolute worst customer service i've ever seen in my life. The last two times I've eaten down there its taken 2+ hours for no good reason. I was willing to chalk the first one up to all Applebees outside of Kansas City being shit holes. But the second time I went to ESPN Zone and had similar issues with lazy ass hostesses, waiters, etc.

LOL, what'd you think was so bad about Elizabeth City? Just the fact that its boring?

I'm as ardent a Philly hater as anyone in the world, but that city is not really that bad. It's got really nice areas, a ton of history and waterfront...

Philadelphia

While I did not enjoy Cleveland, at least I did not witness a guy chase a screaming woman down the street in Cleveland like I did in Philadelphia.

I'd rather go to any bum fuck hick town in North Carolina than Philadelphia.

There's a mall, a hotel, and a prison. It's boring. And the people there try their damndest to get up in your business. There are a lot of other reasons that I won't bother going into... but man, that place is a shithole.

No. I disliked Cleveland and Philly for pretty much all of the same reasons, but one had to beat out the other for worst and the commission of the crime tipped the scales in Philly's favor as Worst US City I've visited.

Also, I'm not arguing your opinion.... it's yours, and you're welcome to it. Perhaps I'm just defending my hometown, because I'm a selfish BASTERT

but

I know TONS of really nice areas in DC that I couldn't even afford in my wildest dreams.

1) shitty construction everywhere
2) people that don't follow the cross walk signals (ie walk out in front of you when it tells them not to go)
3) The absolute worst customer service i've ever seen in my life. The last two times I've eaten down there its taken 2+ hours for no good reason. 1) Construction can be inconvenient, sure. But that is a sign that the city is growing, alive, and healthy. I'd argue that non-construction is the first step to disrepair
2) Yeah, ok... it's a city. People from out of town don't realize (how they don't realize this is beyond me) that you....don't....really.... need a car to get around. Once you're in DC, there is no real reason to leave. You can get just about anywhere and do anything pretty easily using the metro/bus system. Else, take a cab or walk. People walk in DC. It's a pedestrian city. That's probably why people walk out in front of you.
3) Eh.... city mentality. You'll find that everywhere.

We're talking about a situation here where they have walk/don't walk signals on a busy street dude. In any other true city I've been in (take NYC or Philly) people don't just waltz out in front of oncoming traffic (although I've seen them occasionally run ). These people were just walkin through like it was a damned yield-to-pedestrians style crosswalk.

Different cities have different laws regarding pedestrian traffic. In DC, if I'm not mistaken, if a pedestrian is in a crosswalk then all motor vehicles must let them pass (exception is a green light). If you're driving, and you hit a pedestrian within a crosswalk, you can get royally fucked.

Pedestrian friendly city, yo

That night we were just really hungry and tired of walking around looking for somewhere good to eat. I actually despise Applebees in general.

Haven't spent any extended time in many crappy cities, but Jacksonville, NC takes the cake for me. Strip bars, tattoo parlors, and marines. Nothing else in that city.

A long long long time ago (11 years?) I was cruising around Atlanta looking for a local place to grab some lunch. I saw what looked to be a funky local burrito shop. It looked kinda neat, had hip posters on the walls, had funny names for all their food. Alright food, nothing special. Anyway, when I get back to Raleigh, I head up to Cameron Village the very next day and say, "Shit, they have a Moe's here as well? Dammit."
