So I am a hipster because I appreciate quality and have more than a remedial understanding of style?

That's what I was thinking, Ronny.

And I'm more concerned about how people are incorrectly labeling things as "being hipster".

I'm a food writer and I very much value quality cooking, food, and dining experiences, and I swear somehow I always get called a hipster for it.

I got called a hipster for saying there's a huge difference between grocery-store/discount sushi and four star sushi restaurants. Also for saying fast food burgers are awful compared to a good homemade burger.

I mean really, when did having standards get extrapolated into being a hipster? I will barely agree to some terms of snobbery, but it has absolutely nothing in common with hipster culture. If anything, glorifying cheap food would be more hipster.

To sum Shaggy up...jeans, which are probably the most widely worn type of clothing in the US, are made for poor people and are only popular because they are cheap Hipsters like these because they like "poor/cheap" things and things that are not "high-fashion" but they enjoy paying a lot for these cheap things? Craziest definition of a hipster I have ever heard i think.

Jeans aren't popular because they are comfortable, versatile, and durable or anything.

You're very much wrong if you think jeans are "made for poor people".

Their historical origins have nothing to do with current industry and societal standards.

As awesome as it would be to clown on you, there wouldn't be a point. There is nothing I can say to someone who wears hawaiin shirts that is worse than wearing hawaiin shirts.

I bet Shaggy wears jorts. I'd say he wears Tevas, but they're probably too expensive given the fact he can snag some sandals for a buck from a bin somewhere. Same difference, right?

I, personally, do not recognize this. This is, however, a point of personal opinion. The awesomeness of jeans is precisely their ruggedness, affordability and casual nature.

Dress slacks? Absolutely. Jeans? Nah man, I've yet to find a pair whose marginal improvement fit is worth an additional $140. (I also don't want to attract the kind of woman who is attracted to the kind of man who will pay $200 for a pair of jeans).

^That's just the thing, some people think that "hipster" can refer to all yuppies or hippies or progressives or whoever the fuck else, even though all of those are completely different things.

itt subcultures are complicated.

If anyone is "different" from me, then they are a hipster. Simplicity is key.

Most people I would call hipsters wear Levi's. Straight up.

Most people I see wearing Diesel, Seven, etc jeans look like weightlifters and hair gellers.

You got this shit twisted.

OK, on the really really, anyone with photo galleries devoted to computers and girls, wearing Hawaiian shirts, really can't even use the word "hip". Let's just lock this up.

I don't know a single pretentious name-slinger and mainstream damner wearing $200 jeans. Never have. A hipster will pop for shoes waaaaayyy before he or she will pop for denim.

^haha all of those still exist...that's more of a potluck of modern hipsterism.

and lol @ The Williamsburg. I stayed w/ friends in Bushwick last year, and we went over to Williamsburg a few times, and the deep Vs and mustaches were like uniforms.

"Fashion is just about as important as your music taste is. Generally, people assume hipsters to shop in thrift stores in attempt to looking vintage. This is really not the case to being a true hipster. If you don't think you can pull off the vintage look as well, don't worry. Anything from the American Apparel catalog will do just fine, but buying anything from American Apparel from an actual American Apparel store is not cool, man! You have to buy it from indipendant retailers like aBasicAttire.bigcartel.com, because supporting obscure and little known retailers is totally deck..

The classic "Skinny Jean" is essential to looking hip. Hipsters love ironic eyewear such as shuttershades, oversized plastic framed glasses, Buddy Holly glasses, nerd glasses, and for the ones who can afford it authentic Ray Ban Wayfarers of all the colors of the rainbow. Some of the hipsters wear eyeglasses even though they have 20/20 vision! Guy hipsters actually probably wear skinny jeans more than the girls. Basically, the tighter, the better. Now tops aren't as big of an ordeal as pants are. Ironic tees, plaid shirts, berets, large flower headbands, neon nail polish, bird necklaces, gingham, plaid, checkered, vintage floral cardigan sweaters, fit hoodies, patterned and colorful leggings are all part of the hipster phenomena, especially when they layer/wear them all together without matching exactly. Wool is the fabric of choice. But make sure your pants are tight.

Alternatively, for women, high-wasted pants (aka: "mom jeans") may also be worn. Appropriately ironic accessories are mandatory. Essentials include a courier bag (not a backpack) that can fit your MacBook, iPhone, and vinyl LPs (*never* CDs) of your current favorite band. Urban Outfitters,H&M and American Apparel are good places to start. ASOS also has many hip pieces. For inspiration check out Lookbook [www.lookbook.nu] or CobraSnake. Also important is a fixed-gear bicycle with skinny tires, genuine Brooks leather saddle and no front brake."
