I do not want to find out the baby's sex, but I had decided to leave it up to Justin if we found out. Couldn't very well do that he knows and I not know bc everyone else would want to know from him--he'd prolly crack under all that pressure.
Needless to say, through more conversations with family (family is the big influence here) and a few friends, Justin is seeing the appeal of not finding out the baby's sex.
Soooo I think we're leaning to not finding out 1/1/2011 1:16:36 AM |

We're definitely not going to find out when that day comes. That's just how I've always imagined it. Plus I fucking hate how badly people engender their kids, esp pink, so I don't want shit tons of frilly pink crap or blue football outfits. 1/1/2011 9:01:05 AM |

Anyone found any good online articles/sections/book excerpts, etc for the father side of pregnancy?
Most of what I find is like the token page in a complete multi-chapter volume, or web articles that turn out to be written for the female perspective on how to praise the father for 'doing so good'. Granted, I'm not growing the human. I get that. But the literature for dads who want to be involved/help is decidedly lacking.

Some people find that the book talks down to them, but my Brother in Law loved it. He thought it was a great way of looking at things, and one of the few books that really explain what it's like to be an expecting father. If you take the whole "caveman" thing too seriously though, you might not like the book.

Any other pregnant ladies where contacts? My eyes are soooo dry now. I'm either using rewetting drops every hour or two, or just wearing my glasses. I think that's the reason for most of my headaches as well bc I'm drinking plenty of water (usually 2 liters a day). 1/21/2011 2:03:26 PM |

I LOVE the way this little girl kicks and rolls in my belly even when it hurts.
Since I have been lifting small weights squatting and doing lateral tricep extensions I have had less sciatica pain. I def still have the horrible pelvic pain and occasional headaches but I am grateful I can walk without TREMENDOUS pain in my lower back, butt, and legs. I just wish this tremendous hunger would go away so I can be a good type I diabetic. 1/22/2011 10:18:22 PM |

Shopping for a baby monitor & SIDS detection pad. Any recommendations?
I've discovered the Angelcare line of products, and I dig having more than one parental unit, but ultimately I'm concerned with the reliability of reception and number of false alarms I'm seeing in the reviews. 1/23/2011 4:36:15 PM |
elkaybie All American 39626 Posts user info edit post |
Have you picked up Baby Bargains? This book is excellent. They review every product and brand on the market. FWIW, and it looks like you've discovered that with reviews you're reading, Angelcare got an F rating for their monitors.
Every parent I've talked to has recommended the Summer (or any really, but I hear Summer tossed around the most) video monitor. Si had the regular one, and now he has a video monitor...was telling Justin how much he wish he had it from the get go b/c it would've give him weeks of added sleep. he'd walk in to hunter's room and end up waking him up when he opened the door; then he's up for an hour+. With the video monitor you can zoom in, see and hear the baby breathing. 1/23/2011 5:23:35 PM |

We coslept and babywore with our first one, so I have absolutely no advice on baby monitors etc.
I had my first really good kick two nights ago. I had almost drifted off to sleep and "Woah!" It certainly woke me up. I had forgotten just how weird it is to have a little person rolling around in there.

sorta pregnancy related-ish. i didn't know where else to put this. how do you deal with insane mothers-in-law? my SIL has a 14 month old & another on the way, & my husband's mom is fucking nuts when it comes to the baby. she records absolutely everything, constantly tells everybody to look at the kid when he's just sitting there/eating/doing nothing interesting, spoils him to the point where we're worried he'll turn out a bad kid. last night she recorded our entire dinner at a restaurant w/ her cell phone. she doesn't go back & watch the videos.
we don't get to see the kid very often, so when we visit we like to spend time w/ him. yesterday he had just woken up from a nap & i went upstairs to get him. she grabbed her camcorder & went up after me. she was fumbling w/ it trying to turn it on while he just got more & more upset. she kept telling me to wait, & being the DIL i was trying to be polite, so i waited. we went it, i got him out of the crib, & she snatched him out of my arms. he gets fussy, she takes him downstairs & hands him to his mom, then she gets in face. he gets more upset, she gets even closer. his mom tells her to back off, then MIL gets in his face even more. he starts crying & MIL says she doesn't understand why he's so fussy. UGH. BIL avoids her when she comes over, & i almost exploded when this happened. i went outside to play w/ the dog before i lost it.
i know grandparents can be very excited over grandkids, that's normal, but this has progressed well beyond normal & none of us is sure how to remedy this. we thought after the newness wore off some she'd calm down, but she's getting worse. all four of us are really bothered by it. i'm terrified for the day that we have a kid, although thankfully she lives much closer to SIL/BIL than us. my husband has started standing up to her for his sis & it's this |-| close to a yelling match. last night BIL was contemplating breaking her camera.
what in the world can we do to make this better??? i have NO clue what to do with this

My wife's due April 3rd with our second, a boy. Was hoping to have our 2yo (3 in May) potty trained by then but it don't look like it's happening unless her attitude changes overnight. 1/31/2011 10:42:59 AM |

UGH!!! POTTY TRAINING!! Good luck with that. I think Maya is finally getting it and she will be 3 in 2 weeks.
I, too, have been hoping that Maya would be potty trained and not revert back to baby when the baby comes. 1/31/2011 11:28:49 AM |

We're passively potty training and working on a child oriented approach. It's slow, but it's been low stress for us and our son. I hope to have him potty trained by the time #2 arrives in June. Unfortunately, it's been complicated by all of the travel back and forth with relocating to Greenville. --

For those pregnant ladies - did you start taking prenatal vitamins before you got pregnant and if so how far in advance?
We're trying, and I've just started taking them. The suspense of waiting for your next period to come (and hoping it doesn't!) is probably going to make me a nervous wreck until it finally happens. 1/31/2011 10:31:46 PM |

I started taking folic acid daily ~mar of last year, but just folic acid. We weren't TTC--original plan was to do that oh now-ish mother nature had her own ideas--but I figured might as well get a good head start. Good luck

I started taking prenatal vitamins when we started trying...about 8 months ahead of time. That seemed like a long time.
I also started taking lipil and fish oil when I got pregnant. It is like a double whammy but I hope to be loaded in the dha/rha department since it does not harm the baby to take it like that. 1/31/2011 11:46:14 PM |
