I buy hours-old rolls from the grocery store and eat them at home, alone, at 11pm on a tuesday.

I guess I don't understand the "fad" tag with sushi. I agree it is more popular now, but not everything that gets popular is a "fad." Plenty of things end up sticking. I've been having sushi for probably 10 years and have never seen it as a "fad" of any kind. It has definitely gotten more popular over the past 4-5 years (mainly there are more sushi restaurants around), but I've attributed that more to just more people trying and liking sushi than it being a "fad."
I'd eat a good plate of sushi over a steak any day of the week.
That being said, grocery store rolls are pretty disgusting.

I miss the sushi restaurant I used to go to all the time. $1/plate sushi. Quality was sometimes questionable but you learned which plates to avoid after awhile

Sushi is not a fad -- it is here to stay.
Also, it's better than cooked fish.... as in, a medium-rare steak is better than well-done steak. 11/22/2010 11:21:09 AM |

^^^ what is all this stuff in the rolls you speak of? You know there are tons of different kinds of rolls right? Including the most basic ones that are just the rice, seaweed, and choice of seafood right?
I mean, sure, if you specifically order a roll that is crab, avocado, cream cheese, roe, goma and cucumber or something you'll get a lot of stuff in there. My favorite roll is a simple eel or eel+avocado roll.

Ever noticed how sushi lover can't seem to let anyone who doesn't like sushi off the hook? Its fucking cultish. Seriously, no one eating celery has ever offered me a stick and, when I decline, insisted that I just hadn't tried the right kind of celery, gushed about how awesome celery was and made it out into a big fucking deal.

oh, i have no problem with people who have tried and don't like it. but, with any food (or anything really) i'm all about some "don't knock it til you tried it." i will annoy people until they try it at least, but if they've tried, well, more sushi for me. 11/22/2010 1:48:16 PM |

Comparing celery to sushi isn't really equal.
It's like when you tell someone you don't like Carolina BBQ and they go, "You've just been eating that western BBQ bullshit, that's not even BBQ, you need to try REAL BBQ RAWR RAWR RAWR." 11/22/2010 1:51:17 PM |

I thought I would dislike it as well until I was drunk at a friend's going away party at Wasabi and I actually tried it. The first time I ate it sober I had to re-convince myself that it had been good the first time I tried it, but I was admittedly skeptical until I actually put it in my mouth. Ever since then I've enjoyed it on occasion. After you have it a few times you stop thinking about it as "raw meat" and start thinking about it as sushi. The flavors really are good and the texture was nothing like I was expecting.
I wouldn't knock anyone who hasn't tried it or tried it and doesn't like it though. To each his own.

lolwut? I have NEVER done that. The only time I've ever done anything even REMOTELY close is in a thread like this where people who don't like sushi call everyone else who does some sort of hipster caught up in some culinary "fad." I see the scenario where sushi haters feel like they have to express their distaste over and over way more than anything you are talking about, but maybe that is just me.
I couldn't care less whether someone hates sushi or doesn't even want to try it. I just posted in here because I don't understand why people who don't like it have to call it a fad.
