manny diaz of chuck amato's ncsu staff fame named DC at texas.
i was always under the impression that he was a huge joke of a coach who kissed chuck's ass and was more or less chuck's spy for keeping tabs on the other coaches?
from espn comment that sort of reaffirms my impression.
Quote : | "Some years back at a football clinic, Diaz was coaching at NC State, safeties in their secondary. He was explaining how the two high safeties in their 4-3 defensive package fit into their run game defense. A high school coach asked him a question about how to teach the safeties to read and defend a flex bone (double slot, like what Georgia Tech and Navy run) team out of their 4-3 two safty look. Diaz paused and looked confused. He then said quote, "First thing you do is you don't schedule teams that run that offense." I sat there like WHAT??? And then I realized he didn't know how to answer that very simple question, a DIVISION ONE football coach. So I did some asking around about Diaz and I found out that his dad was the mayor of Miami, Florida. I then was told that Amato wanted to be able to recruit the Miami area and south Florida. Needless to say, I wasn't very impressed with him. However, I guess he has learned alot of football since then and I wish him the best of luck b/c I am a Mack Brown fan and I'll pull for Texas. So Good Luck to all." |

of course he does. that quote just supports what i had always heard while he was at ncsu. obviously a lot can change in 4-5 years. 1/6/2011 10:43:42 AM |

Wasn't he basically a graduate assistant at FSU when Amato gave him a job as secondary coach? I imagine he has learned a lot over the entirety of his coaching tenure. Also, I'm not surprised if he wasn't an expert in defending the triple option since we basically never played a team that ran it until we scheduled Navy in 2002. That's something high school coaches have to game plan for but college coaches usually did not. He has coached some pretty good defenses at Middle Tennessee and Mississippi State (and turned down the chance to follow Dooley to Tennessee). 1/6/2011 12:42:42 PM |

I'm curious as to what you _know_ that would make you think that? Or do you just have a gut feeling about that?
he started out as a graudate assistant for chuck, then worked his way into coaching the DBs and special teams, i think, before moving on to DC at middle ten and Miss St.
I would probably guess that given that he was young and trying to learn OUR defense, it's not some huge knowledge gap to not have a defensive plan for an obsolete offense that 3 or 4 teams in the country run.
Also, I don't know how pointing out his relationship to the mayor of Miami has any relevance. You could argue that family ties or being well connected could get your foot in the door in coaching, but having a long upward rise in coaching ranks over a nearly 10 year period comes from producing results.
Will he fill Will Muschamp's shoes at Texas? Maybe, maybe not, but the dude has busted his ass and done pretty good for himself so far.

Congrats to Manny. All of the players I haven spoken to said he was THE high energy coach when he was here, which makes sense considering how young he was.
Maybe the commenter above would have preferred that Manny just make up an answer, rather than admitting that he didn't know the answer. That always works out well. 1/6/2011 12:52:09 PM |

Diaz was crazy for sure, cant say anything bad about the guy he was a morale lifter and the coach players could relate to and talk with man to man whereas Chuck just tried hard to be that guy but nobody was really feelin that

just from catching bits and pieces from highschool coaches and people who had helped with previous camps while i worked at UT during chuck's football summer camps. nothing specific comes to mind, and it might have just been coaches who were mad their players weren't offered scholarships, but that was just sort of the impression that people left me with. either way it seems irrelevant as its been 4+ years since then and mack brown/texas tend to know what they are doing when it comes to football.1/6/2011 3:34:31 PM |

Crowton talked with LSU coach Les Miles on Thursday morning, but told The Baton Rouge Advocate that he wasn't fired. Either way, it was obvious that Miles was looking to make some changes on offense. The Tigers finished 11th in the SEC this season in total offense and were last in 2009.

I like the hire. Proven commodity, can recruit in the northeast and, like Edsall, is a really great person.
He got a raw deal at SU, as evidenced by how far they fell off after he left. A cliff isn't even large enough. They fell in to the Grand Canyon. 1/13/2011 6:22:23 PM |
