So...black market selling to college kids of Everclear and Diesel? I mean, since you have to buy a case instead of a bottle. So fucking retarded!!
Someone's mommy got her panties in a twist and whined to get this shit passed... I LOVE being up in Indiana where WALMART sells me liquor, and the liquor store has weekly specials and sales! I miss my Raleigh, and we're coming back soon, but this shit makes me livid.

Agreed with ALkatraz in the reply email about how this sets precedent. Wtf was the point of allowing 15% alc. content beer? Why not keep it at what, 5%? RAR. Alcohol in NC needs to be privatized - agreeing with ncsufanalum.

Why the hell is the State of North Carolina still in the liquor business in the first place? In non-ABC states liquor stores can carry the products that sell and price them as they wish. Those states show no increase in alcohol related problems such as drunk driving or hospitalization as compared with ABC states like ours. AND non-ABC states tend to make MORE revenue from liquor taxes, since people who want to buy rarer or more expensive things CAN!

Alcoholic Beverage Control is a leftover from the Prohibition Era. Its all about the state government wanting a complete monopoly over liquor . . . where it can be sold and what types and brands are "allowed". There are only 19 other ABC states, but MOST only control wholesale/distribution (and allow licensed independently run liquor stores). NC is one of only 7-8 I believe that have state/county owned and run liquor stores and forbid private. Comparatively we're one of the most backward states in the US (Utah takes the title of worst, heh).


I was in Maryland a while back and went into a liquor store. The prices were 20-25% lower than ours on the same stuff. The selection was huge and the store actually felt like a store and not the DMV. A staff member even came up and asked if I needed any help or recommendations (and then helped me pick out a bottle of rye whiskey as a gift for the friend I was visiting). If I wanted something they didn't have they could have it there within 2-3 days, at no extra charge. As compared with here where you can "special order" something by the case . . . . that's what they're touting with Everclear/etc. But ONLY if you pay in full up front for the 12 or so bottles ($200+), fill out a bunch of forms, give them all your personal information (and agree not to resell any on penalty of criminal charges) and then wait up to a month for them to call and say you can come get it. Oh, and only if its on their accepted "special order list".

^^ I agree with that. I spent the last year in Miami and the first time I went to BJ's, I was like omg when the prices there was cheap as hell. I mean a gallon of rum was like 11 bucks. I ended up buying a trunk full of liquor and I don't even drink. When I got back to NC, I gave it out as gifts to a few of my college friends.

But yeah, Banning the sale, or at least the in store stock, of 190 proof liquor seems nothing more than a publicity stunt after they've been getting already negative press coverage this past year. Personally I think ABC stores needs to be decommissioned and everyone that works at ABC commissions need to focus on public education rather then just stupid stunts like this. They are just so backwards and honestly hurt their net profits, seems so counter-intuitive; an organisation that hates the idea of the products they deliver.

You can't fight the problem by trying to remove the supply, you need to kill the demand.



I've always hated going into NC ABC's since its so depressing and DMV like; except the one in Asheboro after the the county ended it's long dry spell. They built an ABC store within 4 weeks like a block from my house there that looked really nice, tiled floors, well lite room, wood accents, soothing music, products properly labeled with clean tags, very knowledgeable & helpful staff; even a mix drink list to help you get what you needed.

So I sent him an email asking about the factual basis behind this move (e.g. more likely to be abused?, death/injuries, etc.), assuming they had some sort of data, and got this:
