^^the kids could both pick one name from their own to combine later
(i.e. the marriage of a lubbers-shipman and a cameron-warner could lead to both being styled 1) lubbers-cameron, 2) lubbers-warner, 3) shipman-cameron or 4) shipman-warner)
that's how i always assumed people would handle that sitation 12/27/2010 10:45:53 PM |

I agree with the man of banjos. Diamond engagement/wedding rings are stupid for anybody but they're also hypocritical for feminists.
If you want something to symbolize your commitment, that's fine and not necessarily anti-feminist. But there are alternatives that are far less flashy (to say nothing of far less likely to have helped fund a horrible civil war or human rights violations).
A simple gold band can symbolize everything. A diamond is a pathetic apelike attempt to demonstrate to other females that you have acquired a superior mate. It's an expensive replacement for throwing feces at each other, and it's damn sure not feminist.

I remember a great Onion article entitled something along the lines of "Women now empowered by everything they do." The trend exists and may be the death of feminism.
Want to slut it up? You're empowered by embracing your sexuality! Want to be a frigid, sexless activist? You're empowered by not playing into the phallocentric sex-obsessed patriarchy! Want to eat yourself retarded until it takes a forklift to move you? You're empowered by not conforming to mainstream image of an ideal woman! Want to work out constantly to make sure you're hot as fuck? You're empowered because you're embracing your body and all it can do!

So they have to pick an alternative because you have judgemental and preconceived notions?

I think the stress and pressure that women go through show us a lot about ourselves as social animals
I think we'd all be a lot better off if we stopped labeling each others' behaviors so flippantly and started minding our own business more12/28/2010 6:10:10 PM |
