and i found eggs in one of them! im going to try to cook the roe, i have them soaking in saltwater in the fridge now.

i fried these suckers up with some Moss' fish breading

i don't usually do anything special to prep roe. i'll either bread the sac and fry it with the fish or bust it up and scramble with some eggs for a sandwich.

[Edited on April 21, 2011 at 2:35 PM. Reason : but i've never messed w/ white bass roe so idk]

Spent the weekend up at Kerr Lake fishing with my dad. We pitched weightless frogs and lizards at flooded cover all weekend. Caught 5-6 fish each day with most of them in the 1-3lb range. Put out some cut bait off the dock to try an pick up some catfish and ended up hooking a 20lb Blue catfish on an old broken zebco 33. That was a blast to reel in. By the time i netted the fish it had straightened the hook out.

Dad sent me home with a gallon bag of crappie fillets that he caught this week

lol. Hopefully the wind forecasts slack off at the end of the week and don't carry over into the weekend, otherwise it's going to be windy as fuck.

gaught a half dozen crappie off the dock this weekend along with a small large mouth and a hand full of panfish.

I used to hate fishing with bobbers and playing the waiting game, but now I'd much rather drink beer and relax and watch a bobber any day.

Caught a handfull of blues, in the 3 lb range, on the sound side of cape lookout Saturday...I was hoping to catch some drum, but apparently everyone was having bad luck this weekend.

Speaking of bait, anyone tried Fishbites (http://www.fishbites.com/)? They come in various flavors (shrimp, bloodworm, etc) and seem to work pretty well based on the forums.

went bream busting down the eno at westpoint, caught some 20+ big bull breams it was fun left with a sore arm for sure

any time you can gut bull bream action using dry flies is a freakin fun day, even if its all C&R

caught one tiny white bass, so they still are moving up river, maybe next week the big ones will be around, i guess the rain is keeping them around. Great thing about west point is that theres a dam that will keep em from moving any further so if they do make it up this far and spawn its a slaughterhouse! but the water level of the eno has to be consistently high enough for them to make it there and from talkin to the locals thats not every year.

White bass are beasts, fuckin strong as hell love em

BigHit, one of the best ways to catch largemouth is live bait, including bream, which is one of their favorite foods and primary rivals in terms of bedding.

I've caught 5-6 bass on bream over the years while bream fishing, including a 6 pounder.

Heading to Lake Raleigh after work and then Kerr Lake all weekend. Hoping that the bite has turned on a little more, i am getting tired of fighting this wind all the time to keep my boat in position.

Anybody else on here fish Lake Raleigh? I have found it tough so far, cant figure out a pattern and i seem to catch bass in different places and on different lures every time out. I have a spot in the boat if anybody wants to tag along or show me the spots on Lake Raleigh

that's how it was when i fished it. the only thing i ever developed as somewhat of a go-to was a watermelon senko texas rigged and fished shallow in the coves along the north shore.

Went out to Jordan Lake today. Fished out of Eb park. Not a bad day. Caught a ton of small fish, but nothing special. Anyone know a good place in Jordan? No boat.

welp finally wet a hook for the first time in 2 years today. My cousin had been nagging me to go fishing and wanted to go ride out on the beach so we went to the North End of Carolina Beach. And I'm now a Fish Bites convert. Only spent about 4 hours out this afternoon but caught 4 small Spots (3 on the bloodworm flavor and one on the shrimp flavor) in the last hour on the incoming tide. Didn't even get a hit on the lines with fresh real shrimp or cut bait.

Top on shrimp flavor, bottom on bloodworm flavor

PoPo ruining all the fun

Wasn't really targeting spot. Just seemed to be the only thing that was hungry. Plus anything too small for those hooks, I really don't care much about catching anyway.

any of you fools fish the bay river much?

a few months ago my dad bought a camper and we set it up permanently at a campground near bayboro. he's less than 100 yds from the river and the boat ramp is right there. it's pretty sweet. we fished the Bay right much before, but i guess this year we'll be fishing it even more. the location is sweet because it's close enough to quickly trailer to the pamlico and neuse rivers as well. the place has boat storage so all you've gotta do is go down on friday afternoon, pull the boat up to the camper and charge the batteries, wake up the next morning and launch the boat. there's also a little pier that they catch right many trout and flounder off of.

anyway, if any of y'all do the trout/flounder/drum thing down that way, get up with me and maybe we can help one another out.

^^My parents have a similar set up on Spring Creek on the lower pamlico (off hwy 33, just north of bayboro) We have never fished the bay but I imagine they are kinda similar. My dad went down last weekend and didn't have any luck (still early?).

We mainly target trout and our success really comes and goes, it seems like the past two years have been pretty mediocre for us which makes me think we need to change something up. What's your usual gameplan?

we mainly target specks as well. if i haven't heard any good reports and i'm going out completely cold, i usually just pick an area or creek i know pretty well and hit the drop-offs and points near deep water. i also like to focus on oyster beds if i'm in an area that has them. i'll drag a few soft plastics on corks behind the boat while i ease along casting. that's the best way to find fish that i've found.

mirrolures and saltwater gulp are my go-to baits. i use poppin corks with soft plastics a lot to keep the bait in the strike zone and fish slower, but they result in a lot of missed fish if the fish are finicky, which can be frustrating. i've had many of my best days on poppin corks, though.

there are a few lesser-known secrets we've had shared with us or discovered over the years. try Creme's Lit'l Fishie if you never have. we've got a fishing hole or two where we'll flip the bail if we're fighting a fish and hear a boat coming around the bend

^^haha it sounds like we are on the same page. We pretty much use Gulps and last year tried something similar to those little fishies. My dad is big on the popping cork (I've never caught anything using it) and we have trolled live minnows on corks while we were looking for fish

I feel you on avoiding other people seeing you in your hole. We rarely go down on any holiday anymore because it can get so stacked in the good places.

get up with me next time you fish the Bay and we'll double team them if i'm down there. pops and i have found out it's a lot easier to split up and find the fish and then get on the phone or radio.

^^^

I actually fried those with Moss' breading

before that I had been baking them, honestly i found them much much better fried than baked. one of them was full of roe so i took NRR's advice and just fried them too, the eggs were delicious.

i caught this bluegill over the weekend full of eggs and fried them, but they werent nearly as good as the white bass eggs

^ Good to know. I didn't take a cooler with me on Sunday and I wasn't going home right after fishing, so I didn't keep any of the ones I caught. They seemed pretty easy to catch out there though.

Where are the best places to go around the Raleigh/Durham area for just general fishing? I want to get my wife into fishing and she has never been. I only know the good spots back around my hometown. I want to take her somewhere that will be easy to get to and hopefully she can catch something, even if its just bream. A good first experience is key to her sticking with it.

give her an ultralight rod and bream fishing is a blast

id vote for eno river at cole mill access, thats gotta be the best fishing around for the bank angler, eno is full of large bream and pretty accessible fishing because there are so many good holes adjacent to wadeable water

and yea you gotta wade it to get to the good holes

youll catch good sized fish on their foraging routes by creeping up and casting to the shore every so often but the holes youll be getting 2 or 3 of those sized fish before moving on to the next spot
