About crates, our dog Rew loves her crate! She hangs out in it all day and walks right into it when we leave the house. Maggie on the other hand, HATES her's. I could see it being called cruel to put Maggie in her's but we have to or she will run a muck murdering our house while we are out.

agreed, as well as the firing of a weapon in public, because, at least from what the story tells us, it was not done in defense for the child or father, but rather in anger of an incident resulting directly from irresponsible dog ownership and child care.
