There wasn't anything after the credits when I went. This is supposed to be set with the same canon as the original three X-men movies and the Wolverine movie right? I'd assume so since they used clips from them in the trailer...

If so, a few plot holes. Spoilers ahead for X-Men First Class so be warned.

Mostly minor but one big one:

1) In X2, they briefly show Dr. Hank McCoy (Beast) in a TV interview. He's in human form... he's not blue and covered in fur.

2) At the end of the Wolverine movie when Wolverine is helping the kids escape, Professor X shows up. He's standing and using his legs right? Obviously he gets paralyzed in this one which chronologically doesn't make sense.

3) Emma Frost was in the Wolverine movie and was obviously younger than in this one.

I haven't seen this yet, but for the sake of discussion:

1) Hologram projector was used in the comics for night crawler, not sure about Beast. Possible here.

2, 3) Wolverine was a terrible movie.

^Ah yeah, good point about the hologram projector. I know that at some point Beast is a political figure for the mutants and wears his blue fur/etc with pride but in X2 it could have been before that.

And yeah, Wolverine was a horrible movie but I didn't know if it was considered canon or not for the movies. I just figured it was since it had Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart in it.

As far as I know, this one isn't supposed to be canon with any of the movies or comics. Sounds like they kinda substantially rewrote the Charles/Magneto backstory.

saw it last night and loved it. lots of awesome character references/backgrounds. Magneto is a fucking badass in this movie as well which I also loved. I can't wait for more in this line of production.

edit: I also enjoyed Azazel's absolute rape. I didn't know anything about him but he was so lethal it was ridiculous

^^ best part of the movie

and yeah according to the comics nightcrawler is their offspring, but obviously that's not the case in this canon

unless of course nightcrawler never knew his parents and mystique was just being a bitch in X2

I liked that version of Beast. And I'm a big fan of makeup effects (not that that means my opinion is any more valid, just saying I'm somewhat critical). The cosmetic aspects of his mutations are pretty straight forward. I thought they did a great job in that movie with beast's face makeup/hair. The body fur wasn't great, but I don't think it was bad. Overall, I thought it looked fairly natural and it wasn't distracting (as bad makeup often is). And I think I liked it better than the cgi beast. But for the most part, Beast wasn't quite "Beast" in First Class -- not until the end. so he doesn't look like that for most of the film.

As for the movie itself, I thought it was really good. imo, the best made film of any of the x-men franchise.

Beast from X3 was the only thing that I consider done well in that movie. In a half-assed movie rushed with little regard to the source material, I thought to myself that they at least did Beast right. The perfect actor and not done with horribly bastardized CG. I did not mind the makeup and fur.

Quote :

And that's pretty much his exact history (though Mystique does not realize that Nightcrawler is her son . . . IIRC, she thinks he is dead). From the Wiki:
Mystique revealed[7] that she threw him into a well after a large mob found out about Nightcrawler's existence, and Azazel admitted[volume & issue needed] that he secretly saved his son from the fall, giving him to his lover and crony, Margali Szardos, to raise him.

i'm pretty sure that it was hinted at in in X2 or X3 (whichever he was in) that she was his mother, and that she was aware of it - again, just hinted at and not specifically addressed. He wasn't aware of it at all though.

Awesome movie.

X3 Beats> First Class Beast

I found the new beast distractingly bad. Mostly when he is first introduced after changing.

Professor X becoming paralyzed.....have the comics ever produced an "official" back story to cover this event?

Should I consider the events of this movie as stand alone events? How much of the overall story was or was not told in the comics?

Now that I think about it, it doesn't really matter. All of the X-Men movies were different takes on existing story lines.

Great movie though

Spoilers

When that coin was going through that guys head and Xavier had to feel it in order to keep control of him, that was fantastic!

btw, I'm sure I'm not the only one that noticed it but did they really have to pan to the one black guy when Sebastian Shaw made that comment about slavery? Then of course the one black guy is the first mutant to die.

SPOILER

I liked that there were cameos, but I just felt it made no sense when Erik & Charles find Wolverine and then just leave. Their characters wouldn't do that. If FC follows the canon, then Wolverine already had the adamantium so Erik would've felt it, and Charles could've read inside his mind to learn about Wolverine's military past. Idk..I guess they just did a full re-boot to not worry about it.

Agreed on their approach with Wolverine.. they didn't even attempt to reason with him. It could have done without that.. but it was funny. And i guess you could say that charles could read his thoughts better once they were there in that moment and that's why they didn't bother.

But I'm pretty sure he would not have had the adamantium in that scene. According to wikipedia, the main chunk of Origins: Wolverine takes place 6 years after they were in vietnam. First class takes place mostly in 1962. So I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have had it at when they met him.

this is kind of nitpicky, but this bothers me a lot with period movies. The movie was like, "the year 2011 pretending to be the year 1962." The hair especially struck me as inauthentic, along with some of the clothes. If you're gonna make a movie set in the 60's, do it right. Mad Men style!

and don't get me started on that silly nuclear reactor

but overall I liked the movie and would recommend it.

Rebecca Romijn's cameo was one of the best I've ever seen. Completely didn't see it coming, but was brilliant.

Movie was meh at best. McAvoy and Fassbender were great but the rest of the cast didn't cut it.

The action scenes weren't spectacular, the opening to X2 was much better than anything in this movie.

Thought the end battles were kinda lame, though I didn't really mind.

Also, what is the canon. My Xmen knowledge comes from the cartoon in the early 90s, where Xavier's power somehow disabled his legs

I enjoyed this movie, definitely washed out the bad taste of the last X-Men (and wolverine spin-off)

Luled at the Jackman cameo.

I don't see where they go from here, they could have stretched out a few of the major plot points over another movie or two and kept it in the same time-frame. Other than that we're pretty much looking at a complete reboot of the series.

I liked the First Stand Beast. Seemed more like an actual "beast" than a blue guy who's really hairy. Agreed, Kelsy Grammer is the perfect Beast actor, but his lines in X3 were just awful. That whole script was just punchy quips and cliche one-liners.

The only thing I didn't really care for in this film was Banshee. I wish that character had stayed in the comics.

I thought it was pretty great.

Problems:

Sure, Banshee can use his scream as a sonar pulse, but how does that make Charles able to interpret the echoes?

Am I wrong, or did Michael Fassbender give up on holding his neutral accent once they hit the beach?

Also, making Angel female is weaksauce, even if the tattoo gimmick is cool.

They didn't make Angel a girl. It's a different character who is named Angel. She's from Grant Morrison's New X-Men.
