while I know there is going to be plenty of scrutiny and punishment coming Tressel's way, and that he did break some rules, I feel like this whole situation is really overblown. Admittedly, I havent paid a whole lot of attention to the details of the investigation, and I'm inherently going to be biased towards OSU, so take it with a grain of salt. Like I said earlier in this thread, thank God Tressel never received any emails from a Nigerian prince, he might be kicked out of the country
I just wonder why the guy who emailed Tressel didnt email OSU's compliance department, or athletic director, or someone else besides the coach. I have to think that Tressel gets tons of emails daily, and already has other stuff on his plate. I just wonder why I would do if I was in his situation, would I run and tell my boss something that could turn out to be nothing but a rumor, or would I wait for an actual investigation to take place and run its course?
The main thing that pisses me off is that if Pryor, Herron, et al. didnt sell their memorabilia, none of this would be an issue. Or better yet, if that stupid NCAA rule prohibiting players from selling their own personal property, there wouldnt be any sanctions or suspensions at all.
Either way, I do acknowledge that Tressel shouldve at least told his AD as soon as he received the email, and he definitely shouldnt have told the NCAA that he had no knowledge of the incident (if that actually happened). I do wonder what will come out of all of this, I know the university has been standing behind Tressel thus far, but I wouldnt be at all surprised if they cut ties with him just to get the media, fans and NCAA off of their backs. It sucks for Coach Tressel, I do think he's a good guy and was probably trying to protect his players, but when you are under the watchful eye of the NCAA you cant operate under the same rules that the normal population does. 4/25/2011 6:10:08 PM |

Somehow over the years I've found myself surrounded by a lot of tOSU fans. They are extremely bias, and some of them remind me of UNC fans as far as the whole holier than though attitude is concerned... meaning their bias leads them toward wanting to completely cut off all ties with people that have a hint of any wrongdoing so they can continue to tout themselves as the university with a heavily entrenched position on the moral high ground. Of course they want the players back to get the wins, but they'll talk enough trash about the players to try to maintain the clean image.
I also don't feel like selling memorabilia is that big a deal and other universities have done worse and come away with less. I guess the biggest issue on the table is the lying, not the memorabilia. And I've seen some fans get really, really, really bent out of shape over the whole memorabilia thing. Almost as if they equate the memorabilia to sacred spoils of war that only a proud few have obtained over the time honored generations. Like selling a purple heart.
Then there's the normal tOSU fans I know. Just tossing that out there for the good ones.

Typical rationalization from a homer. Why didn't the informant email the AD/SID/Compliance dept.? Who cares, why is the sky blue, the earth round, etc etc. Has nothing to do with Tressell. He's the most important figure and the face of Ohio State football currently. He has a lot on his plate? What could possibly be more important "on his plate" than his star QB jeopardizing his eligibility, along with 3 other first stringers? Would you "run to your boss?" Mayeb not at first, but you call Pryor into your office ASAP and get the details, every one of them. When your star player tells you he likes hanging out with drug dealing tatoo artists and exchanging Big X rings for $$$, then yea, you might want to report that once you realize it's not a "rumor." Knowing your team and what they are up to is that little pesky thing called institutional control. It's kind of a big deal. Especially when you get an email from a booster/fan who lays out the whole entire scheme in plain English.

Ok, I'm an agent, I want Marvin Austin to sign with me after he finishes at UNC. Hmm, I'll call him and offer 100K to his mother if he gives me his word he will sign with me "jersey." See how that can't be regulated if you make it ok to sell jerseys?

Protect his players? Clarrett says "Hi." Pryor is about one notch above Austin in the "idiot of the year" with what he's done and said (i.e. "everybody murders...."). To protect Pryor, he should tell him not to open his mouth unless he's on the football field.4/25/2011 11:27:23 PM |

Butch Davis was also never accused of lying about his knowledge of improper benefits
the fact that OSU is so relevant means more press involvement, and currently Tressel's face is being splashed all over ESPN and the "More Trouble for Tressel?" headlines are being crafted ad nauseum
i don't think the two situations are comparable at all, because the NCAA already visited Tressel once, and they are back for a second go at it because he denied knowing anything when it seems clear that he knew a lot4/26/2011 12:19:00 AM |

the "news" yesterday was little more than a re-hashing of what came out 6 weeks ago. My opinions from then still stand. I don't think ESPN has an agenda to attack OSU the way a bunch of OSU honks do, but I do feel that if this were an SEC school, they wouldn't put if front and center the way they do. Hell, a $1B contract will do that though.
As far as recruiting goes, I don't think this will have that big of an impact. Granted he's not a star, but they just got a 3* WR to commit this morning, and based on quotes from current players, they think far more of Tressel now than they did before this whole story came to light.
My biggest issue isn't what he did (contacting Pryor, Pryor's mentor, FBI) as much as what he didn't do. He is contractually obligated to bring ANY sort of info like this to his AD and compliance department, as well as to NOT fucking lie to the NCAA about it. Sure, he may have been trying to protect his players (whether or not that is BS is irrelevant to me), but he has more of a responsibility to his employer than his players. 4/26/2011 10:43:28 AM |

yeah, I admitted that I'm very jaded. The reports coming out are making it seem like Tressel has some sort of malicious intent and knowingly played ineligible players, which I dont think was the case at all. He should've done more than he did to either tell his superior, or at least sit down with the players to see what their story was, there is no question about that, but I dont think he was trying to evade the system. But what do I know, I have no clue what was going through Tressel's head at the time. If he really did think in the back of his head that he could be playing ineligible players and was trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes, then yes, he should have the book thrown at him. But I find it hard to believe that any coach of his stature would risk losing games, losing scholarships and ruining the schools (and his) reputation because he thought nothing would come of the investigation.4/26/2011 1:24:07 PM |

I dont think the thought crossed his mind that Pryor, Herron, et al might be ruled ineligible due to the whole tattoo parlor thing - and that by allowing them to play the games might have to be forfeited. At least I dont think that he would not play them when an investigation wasnt even taking place at the time the email came through
maybe he did, maybe he didnt, I dont know what went through the man's head 4/26/2011 1:30:31 PM |

This new shit coming out about dozens of current and former players all getting cars from the same salesman doesn't look good. Granted, this is more of a compliance dept. issue than something Tressel has/had full control over, but it's still under his watch. 5/7/2011 4:26:02 PM |

Tressel is cooked ar this point, IMO. I don't think you can tarnish the university's rep as much as he has, bring down NCAA punishment (very probable), and lie to the public without major consequences. OSU has to choose between themselves and Tressel. Firing Tressel may soften the punishment significantly. 5/27/2011 4:21:11 PM |
