Well I think the argument would be that we need better bike and pedestrian infrastructure. The reason why people in other countries use those modes more is because they don't feel like they are putting their life in danger or being assholes when they ride.

I don't ride a bike (though I do walk most places) for that reason; I feel fairly confident I would be hurt or killed.

I'm a bit mixed on the critical mass thing as well. It can be a positive thing, but often times is overwhelmed by people who just want to be assholes.

I think it's probably largely the other way around in many places. They have pedestrian/bike-friendly infrastructure because it makes more sense to ride bikes there. For one thing, their cities are much more dense and compact, as opposed to sprawling suburbia like we have in the U.S., due to our giant expanses of land to work with. Due to this and the fact that (at least in Europe, where I feel like you are mostly talking about) many of the street layouts are old, it isn't really conducive to lots of fast traffic in many places. Furthermore, almost everyone in America can afford a car. That isn't the case everywhere.

I'd also like to add that I've been to plenty of places that are no better (and in some cases, worse) for riding bikes than America is.

I don't think I've driven anything other than a motorcycle to work in a couple of weeks.

...so yeah, I'm as aware as anyone of how much cagers suck, and I have at least a couple of friends who've been hurt badly by getting hit by cars. I've come close myself, many many times.

...but antagonizing people and acting like a dipshit will not help anything. quit trying to frame the Critical Mass types as anything other than a counterproductive cancer.

That's sort of true, but not as much as you would think. Most all of the examples used in those statistics were no better off than the US 30 and 40 years ago, but they made conscious policy decisions to better support cycling and pedestrians. You don't even have to look further than the United States. There's nothing really different about Portland and Minneapolis than many of the other cities in the country except that they made a decision to invest in infrastructure, and as a result people use it. Portland could be an example for many cities. Also, as the chart on short trips shows, even for short distance trips where we could easily walk or bike we choose to drive our cars. As for the affordability things, when it comes to European countries, most are just as wealthy as us I think, but they make it harder to afford driving with really high gas taxes, congestion pricing, etc. Whether that is right or wrong is up for debate obviously, but rising gas prices here (beyond our control) could have a similar effect.

Do cyclists pay road taxes in any way? If they want better bike lanes, pay for them through registrations and shit like that. A paid registration for biking should be required on any road where the speed limit is greater than 15 mph

Bikes are really big around here...almost everyone who lives here has a bike or two....

granted they are mostly beach cruisers cause most people just use their bikes to get to bars or just for a bike ride.

^I'm guessing the answer to that is yes. If they pay their state taxes they are paying for the roads.

What if you live...well, pretty much anywhere west of the Mississippi River that isn't one of the half-dozen or so big cities in the West? There ARE no short trips. It could easily be a 50-mile drive to the grocery store in plenty of places.

I am not opposed to paying a bit for better facilities, but keep in mind the wear and tear on a road surface by bikes is going to be a hell of a lot less than that of a motor vehicle of any kind.

Most of the time it doesn't bother me but one time I was coming up to a stop at the 4 ways stop sign on Sullivan Dr and there was a biker coming in the opposite direction.
