This is why I want to be rich, so I can fly and see the devastation. I'm still pissed that I didn't get to see 9/11 because I had a "pass or fail" test that day 3/11/2011 2:06:30 PM |

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/catalogs/eqs1day-M2.5.xml That's the listing for the most recent 2.5+ earthquakes. Nothing other than aftershocks (~5.0) listed.

I would never bother writing intelligent paragraphs for a thread in Chit Chat. Nor would most people.
But I kind of want to read posts from the army of engineers who will have paragraphs to write.
That is why Chit Chat makes me 3/11/2011 3:38:14 PM |

Pretty much everything is blowing up. Some good perspective on the ominous statements about the nuclear plants.

The engineers who would write paragraphs about this would still write it here. If anything, you might want the geo guys, or nukes. Plenty of threads get knowledgeable discussion in here.
What would you like us engineers to talk about anyway? Waves and shit? There isn't much but speculation and seeing the fallout at this point. We could get nuclear engineers maybe to chime in on why the back ups failed and what the 'extreme emergency' option that the Japanese plants have in their arsenal, but most of that is out in the news anyway. 3/11/2011 4:08:17 PM |

I haven't read the thread, so I may not be the first to think this, but do think that anyone in Japan stood up, mid-earthquake, pointed out the window and shouted, "GODZIRRRRRAAAAAAA!!!!!" Now that is a once-in-a-lifetime pop culture joke opportunity. 3/11/2011 8:57:57 PM |

This is what I think happens with the nuke plant
Plant shut down when quake occurred, as normal emergency procedure. First backup power for reactor cooling was external power from another plant. That plant also shut down. Third power source were onsite generators which were damaged in the flood thus there is no power source for cooling operations. Meltdown ensues 3/11/2011 10:04:28 PM |

that shit is nowhere near tree high, you have zero perspective due to the elevated far angle
how about looking at the trees that the water has actually gotten to and is splashing up, it's at most the bottom 1/3 of the trees3/11/2011 10:07:05 PM |

I know it's Friday night, and we're all out doing super cool stuff, but was anybody watching the 20/20 special edition coverage of the earthquake?
It's bizarre. They played this super intense music and did like a dramatic recap with a weird voiceover. It's like on Entertainment Tonight when thy don't have much of a story and they gotta add a bunch of stuff to make celebrity minutia exciting.
But the disaster is is already interesting, and it happened less than 24 hours ago.
When did they start dramatizing the news this quickly? I'm so confused. 3/11/2011 10:11:06 PM |
