he'd be much less 'liberal' than you believe, even the most ardent federalists back in the day would be at the very least moderate by todays standards, while most would be extremely conservative in nature.

I'd put Franklin on the conservative side of moderate.

Jefferson is just about the definition of a Libertarian (extremely small centralized government)
