There's nothing wrong with reducing our use of gasoline if there are other alternatives.

Unfortunately, we havent' found any viable alternatives yet despite all the trillions of dollars we've spent trying to do so.

Hopefully we will one day. But while we're about to experience a collapse in our entire country, maybe we should worry about more important things?

Joie, if you cut all programs by a certain percent, someone will be up in arms. You cant cut education, because our country is retarded as it is, you can't cut the dod, because were fighting two wars, plus launching missiles into libya.

The only real way is to go down the budget and remove idiot programs, and boost spending in others. Nasa wanted a heavy lift vehicle, but that was axed, and sure as shit space x is putting out rockets on the cheap (good call). Nasa is one department that need masive overhaul, and budgeting directly toward critical missions. Problem is we can argue what's critical til we're blue in the face. I worked on on a mars rover, I'd be pissed if that was cut, but the cosmologists won't care. I did some astrophysics research and I'd be pissed if the james webb telescope was axed too.

Every department has massive infighting, and then fighting external forces. This is part of the problem of the special interest groups and lobby interests, it makes it tough to cut without pissing people off. Especially since cutting an program means someone will lose their job.

^thats my thing.

if EVERYTHING was cut by say 10% then why should one "program" be pissed at another.
it's virtually impossible to decide which programs are needed vs not needed (as seen by the gops ingenious decision to cut planned parenthood)

if they were all cut by this amount there would be no preferential treatment and each program would take a pecentage-ly (ha) equal hit.

[Edited on April 18, 2011 at 9:14 PM. Reason : you say we can't cut dod but isnt that the MAIN arguement in here? inflated military $?]

Why can't we incentivize trading government programs? Allow a services market to govern how the government spends it's money.

Because even a fair across the board cut leads to: you just fucking cut education, are you fucking nuts?

Dod puts a lot of food on peoples tables, ge, lockheed martin, raytheon, boeing, etc... huuuuge companies. There's dumb programs in there, yes, but instead of a cut, how bout shifting and putting armor on our troops... its a catch 22 with the dod.

While that approach makes a good soundbite, what would that entail in execution? Would you advocate cutting say air traffic controllers by 20%, or how would a 20% reduced National Weather Service performed this past weekend? (this is already after decades of severe cutbacks to their offices and workforce). I am not trying to be combative here in any way and agree that government spending can and should be addressed even more so than revenue increases.

The problem comes from the fact that no one has the guts to make rational, realistic changes to the large portions of spending which are social security, medicare and defense while everyone piles on the fractions of pennies for things like Planned Parenthood under the guise of "well, we have to start somewhere." This is why any real, meaningful remedy is going to involve some compromise by both sides to address entitlement and military as well as discretionary spending.

For the record (and I've already said this once), the Ryan plan does not actually address the issue of medicare. It destroys the notion and foists it onto the backs of the states to ration that care.

There's dumb programs in education, too. Spend the money building schools and hiring teachers, IMO.

Run the bare minimums of government by the government, add another layer for private investments, education is still guaranteed a minimum $ amount. Forces government to be very smart with their money. You can wrap things up into separately managed groups so if you want to support education it might be grouped with infrastructure expense because having a good city is important if we are to have public schools. We might group services into one type of fund, which I can guess would be the harder to keep funded because you can bet I'm picking education/science and research before I spend services/military. But an equal balance of spending could help, there are obviously a lot of opinions on how the government should spend ourmoney.

They need to just take one department and out it under the microscope every year. Then rinse and repeat every 16 years or so. Do the regular thang, but take it a step further and do a total overhaul one by one.

Is it not clear to anyone else that the entire education structure in this country has failed completely? I mean the whole fucking thing - K-5, 6-8, 9-12, and the mother of obsolete infrastructures, our universities. We've got this amazing thing called the internet, kids are growing up with it, and teachers are still relying on teaching techniques developed in the 1980s. The more money we dump into this system that isn't working, the further behind the rest of the world we seem to fall, and the only solutions the bureaucrats can come up with is to lower the bar.

Liberals love to let facts get in the way.

They'd rather try to discredit the source rather than bothering to refute their point.

^ not even remotely true.

Bush wasnt a good president either, but Obama has spent more than any president in the history of this country.

Our debt just went from 9 to 14 trillion seemingly overnight
