Downie and Kunitz should and will be suspended. Hopefully Kunitz doesn't get more than a game. He doesn't have a history of that kind of thing. I think him sticking his elbow out was a reactionary thing. It was really stupid, and totally deserving of at least a game off, but I'm sure that wasn't the end result he wanted. Fuck Steve Downie though. Throw the book at that fucker.

NHL is announcing a new deal with NBC and Versus today.

10 years at $200 million per year. The previous largest TV deal for the league was $120 million a year with ESPN from 1999-2004.

$4.2 million increase in revenue for each team.

kunitz should get suspended as well, really dumb move since he's one of the best penguins players still capable of playing hockey

I just don't understand why we couldn't have a multi-channel deal with ESPN like the NBA has with them and Turner. I read somewhere that Comast didn't want to cheapen the brand by sharing the rights, but if the league were smart they would have put a game on ESPN2 once a week. At least hockey would have been mentioned on sportscenter. I just hope this deal puts all of the Final games onto NBC and gets them off of cable. Ideally, the NBC game gets moved so that it's not at 12 fucking 30 in the afternoon and makes them start broadcasting games before the Winter Classic.

The deal is for all playoff games to be on NBC/Versus and family stations. I guarantee you they are not going to have NHL Network broadcasting playoff games. What a disaster that would be.

^they got weekes on payroll, he's been an excellent color commentator for CBC. all they need is a play by play guy, and hire the local crew to do the camera work.

or they'd just rebroadcast the local feed, like some of the versus late games have been.

That's not the point. The point is that NHL Network is a pay extra channel on nearly all providers.

NBC/Versus have all the digital rights to the games they show now. From what I've read, it sounds like they will be streaming games online like they do now with Sunday Night Football.

I know it won't happen, but if the playoffs aren't included anymore, I would love to see the price of GCL and CI come down a bit.

I am all in favor of more national coverage of hockey, but not at the exclusion to those whom solely watch games online and don't have cable. I'd be down with watching them on their own network sites though. And I agree that the price of GCL won't go down sadly. The cool thing there is the archive that you can go back and watch most any game even after the season has ended.

Yeah, I had GCL a couple years when I was living on campus and it is 10 times what it was a few years ago. Like I said though, from what I've read, it sounds like NBC/Vs will be streaming games online. You should have access to those games now as well. I actually think that they have been doing this for their game of the week for a little while now anyway.
