Urban Outfitters has these albums for $7 plus tax right now (in the store/Southpoint, etc):
Bill Callahan Thurston Moore Puro Instint TVOTR Pixies (the latest one) Nicki Minaj (kinda upset I didn't pick this one up; I guess $7 is still expensive for a novelty) There are some I'm forgetting I think
Anyway, yall should go snag those if you're interested in any.

Found a Dual 506 with a Grado F3 cartridge in the box with the instructions the other week, and I'm just now getting around to messing with it. Right out of the box it sounds amazing; the stylus seems like it had been used a minimal number of times, and the only thing I've had to do is mess with the pitch control, which is also holding steady through one side. The only thing I can find wrong with this thing is the dust cover is kinda scratched. Otherwise, 15 bucks well-spent and I now have something I can use in my bedroom. 10/6/2011 11:13:46 PM |

Folks, please don't ever consider those furniture cabinets with built-in players. There seems to be an abundance of them on CL, ALL way overpriced. They aren't worth anything, they don't work for whatever reason like ever, you can't find replacement parts for them 99.99999 percent of the time, and you're really gonna damage records playing anything if you're lucky enough to find one with a stylus on it. 10/11/2011 11:22:52 AM |

Picked up an auction lot of records the other day for $5 that contained about 10 or so original Otis Redding albums on Stax/Volt, and some other stuff - Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Rascals, the Lovin' Spoonful, etc. Near about all are in insane condition.
Also, if anybody's looking for just a simple record player that's in tip-top mechanical shape, needle appears to sound fine, etc. , I have a Garrard 440 I will let it go for $30. Not super high quality by any means, but it's solid; UK-made, again, mechanically appears to be all there, etc. Just let me know. 10/18/2011 11:32:58 PM |

What do you people push your turntable on?
Recently I have been using this:
And though it's got a little bit of bad press, mostly in relation to the brand and what you potentially could get out of a Marantz product, it sounds pretty damned swell to me...and a huge step up from the piece of shit I was using before.

i'd like to get a vintage receiver... suggestions on where to find around raleigh? craigslist i guess? 10/24/2011 1:04:07 PM |
Mr Scrumples Suspended 61466 Posts user info edit post |
Craigslist would be a good starting point for analog receivers. I got burned on there about a year ago with a vintage Sansui, though, so just be wary about what you find. As you probably realize with old electronics, there's potentially a million things that could be wrong with them. And there's no abundance of people working on them that know what they're doing.
I would recommend you getting a popular one like a Marantz 2235B or something similar. I say this for many reasons; namely Marantz 2000-series are pretty common, so the parts aren't going to be nearly as hard to find as others when you need to replace or fix things. It's a good starting point for good-sounding, vintage receivers. There's some other decent ones out there, but I'd strongly recommend you sticking to a common name-recognizable one.
Ebay wouldn't be a bad option for looking either, but these things can way upwards of 75 pounds, so try to stick with somewhere you could pick up locally, etc. Also man, check the thrift stores, estate sales, auctions, ...anything like that. Youll be surprised at what you can still find.

No problem. I was wanting to see what others have to say about it, because I certainly don't consider myself the be all end all to advice on these. However, I do know what sounds good.
To reiterate about what I use currently, after using a similar digital receiver that you're currently using, what I have now has been very reliable, and sounds great. Marantz purists and obsessive audiophiles don't like it because it was built after Marantz moved the factory to Japan, which I think coincides with Philips having a stake in the company. Whatever, who cares... It's quiet, responsive, wasn't expensive, and just sounds really good with all things considered. 10/24/2011 5:13:26 PM |

pretty sweet vault package in my opinion. i signed up. nothing spectacular about the raconteurs, but i like them, and that show they played last month is probably one of their last. pretty excited to hear the beck and josh homme remixes on the 7" too. those guys and jack white have been my favorite artists for a long time, so this is pretty awesome to me. you also get an LP, a 7", and some kind of novelty item in addition to the vault packages each quarter, so i think the price is probably worth it for the amount of cool shit you get. 10/30/2011 9:44:30 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
None of the Vault packages have ever done much for me as a whole. Mostly I don't care about the Raconteurs or Dead Weather, and a lot of the Stripes stuff they put out is just an alternate artwork version of something that exists. 10/30/2011 9:59:57 PM |
Rat Soup All American 7669 Posts user info edit post |
yeah, the other ones haven't looked all that appealing to me for the most part either. i'll probably cancel before the next quarter. people also pay exorbitant amounts for those things on ebay since they only print copies for the exact amount of subscribers that are tallied each quarter.

He's trying to bundle this with a non-working Thorens TD-160 (very good table btw) for $300 (wtf?)
$175 is a decent price for this receiver if everything works properly. You can buy these all day in the 200-300 range on eBay, plus the $50 shipping fees. If you're in the market for something like this, I'd say bite on it. Just make sure EVERYTHING works.

Was thinking I'd bite on that Thorens table, but I don't know what a good starting point would be for an offer. I even feel like $50 would be too much of a gamble when there could literally be an infinite number of things wrong with it....
Just a little info on Thorens tables - German, sometimes Swiss-made tables from the 1970s or earlier, and some of the best you can buy without having the money for the newer audiophile tables from makers like Musichall, Project (same factory as Musichall), Rega, and so on.
Some Thorens tables can fetch upwards of 1-2 grand, but mostly for rarity and collector reasons. These TD-100 series tables are highly sought after as well, and you can often find them in the market range of 200-300 in working order and they will sound great and be extremely reliable with all things considered.
DO NOT buy a new product with the Thorens brand, and you simply need to read reviews to understand why. Though I don't have experience with the ones they currently sell (such as on Insound.com), the Thorens company proper no longer exists and the name is borrowed. Expect the same quality as the Sony table you can get at Best Buy or HH Greg for around $100, but by paying 5 times more because of the name.

I rock a Thorens TD-160. I bought it for $250 a few years ago with a new custom made acrylic cover (originals have a tendency to crack easily) and it had been completely rewired and serviced. I slaped a new Audio-Technica 95E cartridge on it. I run it all to an old Sherwood Newcastle stereo receiver and then to two Axiom M3 speakers.
I have to say it is the best looking and sounding record player I have ever heard in person. The only downside is it lacks the ability to play 78s and the plastic wheel that governs the speed is slick so unless you have a brand new belt or clean it frequently there is a tendency for it not to catch properly. The best part about the player is the craftsmanship, from the perfectly weighted platter to the delicacy of the tone arm...worth every penny of the $250 I spent. 11/4/2011 2:03:26 PM |
