Liverpool needed a reliable, steady performing winger instead of gambling or going cheap on somebody unproven from a different league because that hasn't worked for them in the past. Why is Ashley Young relevant? He's not on the market right now. Let me know who else was available.

Downing has the most crosses of any player in the PL for the last 3 seasons and he's averaged 34 games a season for the last 5. He's there to make Carroll a better player, not to carry the team on his back. Liverpool probably overpaid for Henderson, Downing, and Adam individually but it's a package deal. Those three guys are statistically three of the best players in the league at creating opportunities for other players and Liverpool has those goalscorers in Suarez and Carroll already.

I could give a fuck about the transfer fee - Henry has proven he has the money and is willing to spend the money to buy players so these purchases aren't coming at the expense of anybody else. Why should I give a shit if he overpays a few million?

*well I did give a fuck about the transfer fee when I thought Meireles was going to be sold but he said he's definitely staying so that's fine with me.

Was Downing somewhat overpriced? Yeah, but Comolli and KK have shown that they want to build the team around established players w Prem experience, that way we dont have to wait for them to settle/complain about the language/complain abt their family being unhappy/fuck off to la liga after 2 seasons. and the thing about Downing is that he's shit. He's always been shit. He'll always be shit. Liverpool were in for Young, but they wouldn't pay AV what they thought he was worth. Then United swoop in and buy him. Liverpool was then forced to go after his one-dimensional, no-pace, no-frills antithesis. AV made out like thieves on this deal.

Downing was named player of the year for Villa (you know, the same team with superstar Ashley Young) last year by the club and by the fans. I'm not saying he's overall better than AY but he had a better season last year, he's entering the prime of his career, and he fills a massive hole for Liverpool.
