@ moron - they indicated they did not want a job. They were brutally honest in their intentions, which I guess in a weird way is honorable. They just wanted to make sure, should the gov't actually do any sort of auditing, that they were covered.

I think assistance with cut offs would be a great thing. Instead of continuously spending money on entitlements, how bout spend money for programs on weaning people off?

Take unemployment for example - say you have x amount of weeks of unemployment dollars. At 15-x weeks, you get a call from someone from the unemployment office specialized in getting you work. Similar to the Career Services center that NC State has (but hopefully more effective). This person could refer you to temp agencies, help you set up profiles on LinkedIn, Monster, CareerBuilder, etc, and of course building up your resume. I realize that most of those probably won't get you a job, but it is a start, a way to get you a little more motivated. Then at 7-x weeks, that same person would follow-up with you on your progress. If you have any leads, maybe they could help you further those leads. If not, then they can start leading you toward temp-agencies. I know many people who have gotten permanent jobs through temp-to-perm positions.

^ with the exception of the follow up, that's pretty much how the system works now. And I'd bet we don't have the resources for follow up.

I think we should just treat people like adults, offer help with the job search for anyone who wants it, and have harsh penalties for people caught abusing the system, but don't try to hold their hand too much.

There's always going to be people abusing a system, but when those people are a small minority, that doesn't mean the system is broken or worthless.

Eventually they need a rampdown, payout drops a certain percentage every week, until it reaches zero, with the stipulation that any odd jobs, temp work, part time work, etc does not interfere with benefits.

I think people are scared to do any work other than full time because they do not want to fuck up their benefits, but part time and temp can lead to full time in many jobs.
