I think the only take-away from the article is to simply ignore stuff like this. The school's leadership and many in the student body have taken it upon themselves to make a much bigger deal out of tunnel obscenities than is really necessary. People do dumb shit, we got it. No need to draw attention to it, because it just gives them all the more reason to do it again - attention.

Thank you yuffie_chan. The RA is speaking the truth. I have similar thoughts but we all know they tend to come out just as offensive as "Nigger".

I totally support them printing and distributing this book. They allow this racism to go unpunished and I believe every student has a right to know how their 4 years will really go.

I walked through the "Racist Expression Tunnel" today and cannot for the life of me understand why people think it makes the school look good. It is by far the ugliest piece of shit I've ever seen.

It's kinda depressing to me how many people do think like that... a guy in my Stats class last year transferred from UNCG to NCSU just because the glbt community was the largest organization on campus.
It's bullshit.


Oh, and if there was any confusion... in the quad, floors are co-ed, so you have two RAs, one male, one female.
The RA I mentioned wasn't the RA on my floor, but he was in the quad, so I know him decently well.

I think problem I had with the article was with the title and the sentiment that suggested "Dear black community" you should respond this way. It just seems to imply there is a single monolithic appropriate response, whereas valuing freedom of expression should allow for a multitude of individual responses. Also, I don't like the implication that everyone who faces hate should do it happily and provide some hand-holding to the haters until they finally see the light. I mean, it’s great for everyone who can make hand-holding advocacy their life's calling, but it is also completely fair to call out this bullshit as bullshit that doesn’t belong in our marketing materials rather than embracing the hate with a smile.

I will be interested to see what sorts of columns this kid writes in the future

he has a better style than 90% of Technician columnists, and he understands that writing about controversial shit is an excellent way - probably the best way - to get yourself exposure, and make yourself a celebrity on campus

it's not precisely trolling, but it's the same basic concept

and he actually made a few good points, although about midway through the column he seemed to run out of things to say, and begin merely to repeat himself/give examples

but on the whole, this column beats the pants off most of the other columns I have read in Technician, both in my time and in years since

I only hope that he has a good sense of humor, and does not confine himself to serious topics.

In other news, today at my workplace a man came in wearing a t-shirt with the confederate flag on it. I refused to wait on him, but a black woman I work with did it ever so gracefully.. I admire her grace and class so much. She did a fine job I didn't agree with his beliefs but he has every right to wear that shirt if he wants to. We have to look at the FET the same way, but regardless, it should not have been printed on media handed out to the public. Like kiljadn said, huge black mark on NCSU's reputation.
