LOL @ this dude who obviously only read the box score:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/802178-nfl-preseason-latest-news-analysis-and-results-from-around-the-league/entry/116047-2011-nfl-preseason-recap-cam-newton-proves-hes-no-better-than-tim-tebow

Quote :
"2011 NFL Preseason Recap: Cam Newton Proves He’s No Better Than Tim Tebow

After one start in the preseason, many people are ready to write off Cam Newton as a bust.

With the No. 1 overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers selected quarterback Cam Newton to be the team’s savior.

A rough outing the first time out on the field is to be expected, but Newton told the Associated Press:

"I was just trying to go out there and first off prove to myself that I could play on this level. After that first little completion, I started to get the juices flowing. It was like, ‘Hey, I’m in the NFL,’ and I started to get a little swagger about myself. They had me guessing out there and I know this is just the beginning of what’s more to come."

Newton is just a glitzier version of Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

The media will never hear Tebow talking about his detractors in any measure besides using the words as encouragement, but that’s where the differences end.

Both Newton and Tebow have very strong arms, and their on-field work ethic is second to none. They also struggle in very similar ways, both under center and understanding terminology, and neither has seemed to pick it up with any semblance of understanding.

Newton has been shafted by the lockout, but the game errors that Tebow has made over the last year are mirror images of the mistakes Newton is making.

In five years when neither one of these players is anything but a running joke, experts will look back and ask what teams were thinking!"

Cam Newton looks like an NFL quarterback. He shows poise in the pocket and solid mechanics when he's not throwing off his back foot. He can buy time in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield, and he can throw on the run. You can see that he'll develop into a solid pro if he works his ass off and learns to read NFL defenses. The scrambling ability combined with that deep ball accuracy will make him tough to stop. He may play a lot like Roethlisberger used to, waiting for guys to get open and then gunning the ball to them. It's the opposite of Manning and Rivers' timing routes and anticipation.

Tebow just looks like a tight end trying his damnedest to play QB. It's his 2nd year as a pro and he still looks out of place every time he has to drop back from under center. He's indecisive, and he panics whenever his 1st or 2nd read isn't there. His stat line was efficient, but that was only because he tucked and ran each time he got confused. That won't fly against a good defense that has been scheming to stop him. I go back and forth on Tebow, but right now it's hard to see him developing into a solid starter.

"Without a doubt we're in uncharted waters now. A certain amount of the spotlight was to be expected when you have the #1 overall pick and select a polarizing figure like Cam Newton, but I'll admit I had no clue it was going to be this dramatic. In the span of just a few days the Panthers went from laughing stock of the NFL, a team that had almost no talent, to be doted on as geniuses for having he foresight to select Newton.

Thus far, Rivera and co have done an excellent job keeping all the players humble and ready to keep working, I hope they're still able to. Not that I think we have a great deal of egos on this team, but today I was pondering what the result of all this early attention will be? There's still a great deal of work to be done, even if some members of the media are willing to anoint Newton as the next 'great one'. "

writers/reporters are all over the place with Newton. i'm not really putting too much stock into anything anyone says, because it's been ONE preseason game.

however, it's nice to see so much attention being paid to the Panthers...last season no one gave a shit because they were so bad. at least there seems to be some promise for this season.

$1.7 million under the cap as of yesterday

if they do bring in another CB, he'll be on the cheap

i wonder if they just go with what they have, as Burney isn't the worst thing we've ever seen. in fact, i think he'll be pretty solid.

There has to be a veteran corner cut in the next couple of weeks we can pick up.

Another body at DT would be nice too.

20 attempts and 187 yards? he's probably only going to be playing for 1 quarter, right?

I'll say 7-12, 103 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT

He's playing the entire first quarter and the starters are playing the first half. I was basing it on 2 quarters worth of time.

Pilares is one of those guys where you're like "who?" and then a month later you think he'll make the final roster and might catch a couple TD's this season

lol at yall predicting 20+ attempts

Rivers, Brees, Manning, Brady, Rodgers, etc wouldn't throw 20 passes in a preseason game, especially in a non-week 3 preseason game

the QB for the jets threw 38 times I believe. If they really want to test him, 22 is feasible.

38 times in how long? less than 2 quarters? thats an insane amount if you extrapolate for a 4 quarter game, but maybe in preseason some teams are airing it out like fuck

he also played over 2 full quarters. I think we'll see 14-15 pass attempts at the most. yes he'll be working with the first team, but there is also a run game we need to get back into rhythm and it's very important he get comfortable with handoffs to our 1st team RBs in game situations.

Clausen is going to get first team reps too, so they can't give Cam all the work with them. So that's why Cam will only probably play a quarter or so.

8-14, 112 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
4 rushes for 26 yards 1 TD

And McElroy had 38 pass attempts for the Jets because he was the only backup behind Sanchez that night, Brunell was hurt. That was the most pass attempts for a preseason game by a Jets QB since 99, I think.
