Shit, I go to nice restaurants and eat alone all the time. I really like good food, I don't like to cook, I'm never dating anyone, and most of my friends have grown up and gotten married.
I take my 4-year old to nice restaurants, too. She's well-behaved, and sometimes I'm in the mood for some fine eats when I have her. I figure it's an opportunity to develop her palate from an early age, too. 9/3/2011 11:55:59 PM

If the place is 15 minutes from my house, I'll get takeout. I prefer to sit at home and watch TV while I eat. Otherwise, I sit at the bar and use the cell.
I only see a movie alone if I really want to see it and none of my friends are interested. 9/4/2011 12:01:16 AM

There aren't any movies that I want to see that badly that nobody else wants to go see, haha.
and yeah, I use the hell out of my iPhone while I eat (and while i stand in line, or all sorts of other idle time) 9/4/2011 12:07:52 AM

I've done the movie thing once. I've done dinner alone from time to time. 9/4/2011 12:13:09 AM

It's called lunch break. I've worked jobs in the past where people had to remain at our place of employment all day, so sometimes we would go alone to Golden Corral. Other times we would go in small groups though. 9/4/2011 1:05:07 AM

^^ If I went to Golden Corral for any reason other than the dessert bar, I would prefer it to be alone so as to have no witnesses of my presence there. 9/4/2011 1:39:25 AM

i'll eat alone at restaurants that have wi-fi when i'm trying to get some school work done. it's usually panera or somewhere similar. i wouldn't want to take up space in nice, sit-down restaurant for 3+ hours with my laptop and books laid out everywhere. also, i absolutely love going to the movies alone. i don't like to talk during movies and i like to put my feet up and get really comfortable. it's best if no one is sitting in front, behind, or on either side of me. 9/4/2011 1:52:30 AM

i eat by myself all the time
i travel a lot for work and this means traveling alone and eating 3 meals a day on the road by myself. i don't really care because I need to eat and I honestly don't know anyone i could invite to go with me. i try to have a book or magazine with me but I usually forget.
while it never bothers me, i got really self conscious one time at cracker barrel (hey you try to find legit food in middle of nowhere louisiana!) i was eating my breakfast for dinner and reading a book and the family sitting next to me started talking about how sad it was that I was eating dinner by myself.
nevermind the fact that they didn't really keep their voices down. i guess since they thought i was reading, that my ears didn't work. and while they "felt bad" for me, they never tried to talk to me.
other than that i've never had weird looks (that i noticed) and i have a routine for going to the typical spots i like to eat so you end up becoming somewhat of a regular and don't feel out of place. 10/8/2011 2:41:33 PM

I can't eat by myself at a restaurant. Even Taco Bell or something like that. If I am alone, I would rather roll through the drive-thru and eat in my car. 10/8/2011 2:49:07 PM

^^^Yeah I noticed there were a lot of regulars alone at Mitch's during lunch time when I was at NC State. A lot of them sat at the bar though.

It was the best resturant within walking distance when I worked at Pep Boys in Garner 11 years ago. The best part is the salad with lots of ranch dressing on it. 10/9/2011 12:30:44 PM

And, today, in a break from Excel overload, I had a 3pm meal at a french restaurant. Why? Because, I wanted their french onion soup. 10/9/2011 9:44:58 PM

I eat alone all the time. Bring a book/magazine/newspaper, sit down, enjoy. It never occurred to me that there was anything unusual about it. 10/9/2011 10:05:21 PM

I ate dinner by myself a little over a week ago (on a Friday night) and it was great. I brought a book to read and it was relaxing when I ordered the guy asked if I was just me and when I said yes, he smiled and said "awesome" (not in a joking way)
Then I went there for brunch today (by myself again) and the girl taking my order said, "You were here last week, right?" -.o not sure if that's a bad thing, hah.
Anyway, I'll be doing it again. Wasn't bad at all. 10/9/2011 10:30:02 PM

I don't really eat alone not because I'm scared to, but because I eat out pretty rarely in general so the few times a month I go out socially are enough for me. When I'm driving to Georgia or something and stop for dinner on the way I always stop at BK or Subway or something and eat alone there. But that's about it. I kind of want to now, though. 10/9/2011 10:37:33 PM

I eat alone pretty frequently. i don't think there's anything all that odd about it.
I will say that one of my favorite things in the world is what I like to call, "the world's saddest dinner." Go to a chinese restaurant on Xmas eve or Xmas day and it's like the opposite of a Hallmark channel movie. It's just one solitary, sad looking man at each table/booth. Generally unkempt, probably divorced and his ex has custody of the kids. If one of them started gently weeping the entire place would probably break down into a cascade of bawling men. It's one of my favorite meals of the year. 10/10/2011 12:51:21 AM

its definitely a lot more normal now that I am in Atlanta than it was at other places I have lived. Everyone is just so damn busy and there are tons of people always around due to business that its not unusual at all to see people eating alone. I love eating lunch alone, get to get out of the office, relax, read my paper, chill 10/10/2011 12:58:18 AM
