"AMEN! That was one thing I hated about being in Raleigh. I couldn't find an equivalent to 99x. I simply went without a rock station because 96Rock just didn't suit me."

Even 99X scares me now though. It used to be that (when I lived in Eastern NC and early college years) I'd visit home and I'd hear something new on the station and that's why I listened... after all they are self-advertised as New Rock, that's their whole thing, and 105.5 is just "whatever rock we feel like playing, new or old, but mostly hard rock". However, last three-four years, I just keep hearing all the same bands and often the'yre not even new songs--it's almost to the degree that 105.1 in Raleigh plays the same 20 pop songs for three months. I don't even care that much for New Rock or pop rock in general, but I like to keep somewhat current and at least hear the new bands, but I can't even do that anymore.

None of this, however, changes the fact that 99% of my radio consumption will still be 88.1.

Since moving back to Greenville, my husband likes to joke about 99x because it basically plays all of the same music that we listened to in HS back in the late 90s. But I don't care, I'd rather listen to that than the hair band shit that was on 96Rock.

Hey guys, you may have noticed something different today when you turned on the radio. 96rock is now Radio 96.1. Same rock, with a broader range of artists thrown in! Thanks for your concern--but I'm still with the station and you'll still see me around town just like you always have. You'll still hear me, too. I hope you like what you hear and I can't thank you enough for sticking by me and our station."

Sounds like she won't say much publicly on the matter.

Same type of cost cutting moves that the Traffic Reporting Biz (primarily MetroNetworks/Westwood One Raleigh) went through...when were were aquired from Bill Jennings/Traffic Patrol Broadcasting Metro/WO promised "No Changes"...in good weather we would contract with flying service out of KRDU to take 2 planes up: 1 Ral, 1 Durham plus have reporters out on the road...among them including Bryan Bliss and Robert N. Hill, Dave Alexander, etc...about 3 months in the changes started happening...1 less plane in the air and one less reporter on the road...then the other plane went...then reporters on the road were cut one by one...I was having to guess traffic situations by what I heard over the scanners with no verification from eyes on scene...I could see the writing on the wall and left at end of 2003...long story short, Metro closed up their Ral bureau and now does "local" traffic reports out of state...to be fair to Curtis they still have their Traffic Reporting division (which some of my crew joined after getting shitcanned)....but they don't get paid anything...FM radio is doing the same thing with voicetracking & using out of state DJs for multiple stations...I used to love the business and part of me still does but the game ain't the same mang

If nothing else in my almost 4 years of traffic reporting/radio broadcasting I might have the distinction of being the
only guy ever to say "Goddamn" during a traffic report (on accident) on a Christian Station and not get fired...ironically it was a Curtis
station...an AM station at that...long story tl,dr but I might share with those interested

It drives me crazy when commuting and they provide absolute shit traffic reporting. It's like, "Gee thanks, I probably could have gleaned more information from Beat the Traffic app." I want real DJs and real traffic reporters kthx

I wish SiriusXM would fire all of their DJs and just play music. They kept some of the dumbest morning programs when they merged the two companies.

I have yet to find a radio station on satellite or local that even comes close to Rock92 out of Asheboro/Randleman area.

^^ Great station

I remember when they were "Classic Rock 92"

and when they changed formats into "Rock 92"

another reason Charlotte is better than Raleigh, an amazing selection of radio stations

I actually don't mind the change yet. I was actually able to ride to work and home without hearing Nirvana, Alice in Chains, or Stone Temple Pilots. That was kind of refreshing.

96 rock is dead. 101.5 AND 100.7 playing Christmas music. Raleigh radio sucks

so they are still on the 80s? probably the worst decade of music ever fucking made, and you want that to be the first thing people hear when you change? try playing newer shit, with good old rock every now and then. and not just AC/DC and Mr Brownstone.

I remember when they launched 96 Rock and didn't even have a phone. No requests and no computer meant it was actually a half-decent station.

That lasted a week. Shitshow ever since. Still, it was a locally-operated shitshow for years, and you have to give them credit for that.

Radio as a commercial format with any sort of integrity is dead. Unless it's a college station (KNC, XDU, XYC) or public service station (SHA, UNC), it's worthless.

lol hipsters are so detached. ask 10 people on the street about the screaming trees and they'll be like who?

but really, they had a few good songs 20-ish years ago, why are they so memorable? Not like they're a defining band of the era or something.

I was skeptical, but I put on 96.1 today for a while and liked 95% of what I heard. Hate the "radio 96.1", hate the "more music, less blah blah blah", but the music they're playing isn't bad.

agreed

I listened to them for 20 minutes or so when showering at home after work. I liked 2 out of the 6 songs I heard (Radiohead - Creep and U2 - In The Name of Love). I'll tune in again with high hopes...doubt I'll be pleased though.

I'm still liking the new format better. They play more songs. I remember when 96.1 played their entire music library over about 3 days. They played a ton of songs that I never heard them play before that, or after that. I don't get why radio stations think they have to play the same songs over and over from 20+ years ago.

It's quite simple - kids these days don't listen to FM radio much anymore with ipods and satellite radio and CDs. Adults are the target audience.

So After reading this I decided to post my displeasure (nothing crude) on some facebook pages. Alli decided to counter me complaining its turkey day and she deserves a holiday. Ok. Dont be checking your work stuff while its your day off. Thats your own dumb fault. That or get a spokesperson to check it for you. You self label yourself as a celeb, then act like it. And deal with it.

So someone said Foster is still there. What happened to him being station manager? And whos this Mike Hartel dude?

My FM transmitter is broken so I'm stuck with the radio until I get a new one. 96.1 is pretty much the only option when 88.1 is playing awful indie/indie-folk/"Christ what the fuck am I listening to right now" bullshit. Did they just fire all the DJs or what?
