REI, Great Outdoor Provision Co., or the internet. The Michael's in my area doesn't carry nylon webbing. They have a limited number of buckles and sliders though.

REI also has snaps with setting tools. You may want to use those on the belt loop so you don't have to undo your belt to put the knife on.

Sooo... I decided to do some research on municipal codes. I came across this pretty cool website:

http://www.municode.com/Library

Looking up Raleigh, NC, I have found out the following info:

http://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientId=10312
Sec. 12-1060. - PROHIBITION OF FIREARMS AND DANGEROUS WEAPONS.

Quote :
"For purposes of this article, the term dangerous weapon shall be defined as any device or substance designed or capable of being used to inflict serious injury to any person or property; including, but not limited to: firearms, airguns, BB guns, pellet guns, knives or razors with a blade more than three (3) inches in length, metallic knuckles, clubs, blackjacks, nightsticks, dynamite cartridges, bombs, grenades, knives, explosives, molotov cocktails, and sword canes.

That seems silly. You need at least a 4" blade to fight off someone with a grenade.

Yeah... North Carolina has no regulation on blade length. But a lot of local city/town ordinances are limiting it to either 3" or 3.5". It makes no logical sense that someone can be licensed to carry a concealed firearm legally, but they are limited to a 3" pocket knife.

That sage is neat. It's like a native with a full flat grind. I love my native...I might need a sage.

I bought a Native at ^ suggestion from Walmart three/four years ago. It's been an amazing knife. When I first got the Sage, I was skeptical that it was really worth 4x the Native. After using it for a few days, I don't want to even pick up the Native. The full flat grind + integral frame lock + spyderhole = perfection.

I do wish it had a black clip though. It's really too shiny.

I finally set up the sander my wife got me a while back. I used it to do some heavy metal removal from a few neglected tools or thinning out some blades.
Here's my Fiskars axe that now has a convex secondary bevel and a 40° micro bevel:

It's sharp.

I also recieved my Scrapyard Knives 711. I had to reprofile the edge. I think it's gonna be a great larger knife. I'll post pics sometime.

Just saw that knife limitation stuff posted last month. Looks like my knife that I usually carry is around 4"...damn

If you measure it from a certain point, its about 3.5", which looks to be the limit for Charlotte. How are you supposed to measure blade length?

The NC General Statute GS_14-269 states:

Quote :
"It shall be unlawful for any person willfully and intentionally to carry concealed about his person any bowie knife, dirk, dagger, slung shot, loaded cane, metallic knuckles, razor, shurikin, stun gun, or other deadly weapon of like kind, except when the person is on the person's own premises.

...

This section does not apply to an ordinary pocket knife carried in a closed position. As used in this section, "ordinary pocket knife" means a small knife, designed for carrying in a pocket or purse, that has its cutting edge and point entirely enclosed by its handle, and that may not be opened by a throwing, explosive, or spring action. "

I have a Kershaw Speedsafe, which has a hammer open and could be sping assisted. So, is that illegal?

Some discussion here. Basically it could be legal, since it is "spring assisted" and not automatic

Spring assisted is legal, as it requires a primary opening motion. A spring operated functions by button. This can be front exiting, or side opening.

For the most part it's the length from the top of the handle or hand guard to the farthest point of the blade. If it doesn't have handle slabs or a guard it's usually the bottom of the plunge line (where the primary grind starts) to the end.
That's how industry does it and how I've heard a few LEOs define it.

Some people will measure the edge length, but that's generally not correct unless the knife has no slabs and the plunge line is a squared angle.

i just picked up a glock field knife on Midway for $27. I figured for that price, I'd take the chance on the quality, and just return it if I wasn't happy...

It's actually pretty stout. The handle and sheath feel like the same stuff they make their handgun receivers out of, and that hook on the top side of the cross guard is a bottle opener.

I've only played with it at my desk, so I can't comment on the edge, or how it is supposedly "perfectly balanced for throwing." Perhaps this weekend. So far, I'm pleased with it, especially for the price.

Oh hell yes. I've cut myself on accident when I first got it, and I didn't realize how deep it went. I was closing the blade and there is quite a bit of tension on the lock spring. I was trying to fold it one handed and the tip of my pinky finger was right there in the path. Sliced off a good bit of it, bled for about an hour, all from just the knife closing on itself. lol. I was more impressed with the sharpness of the blade at that point that I was with the fact that I had cut myself like a moron. Anyways. I love the blade and would recommend it. Great for cutting oranges...

In another news, the wife is loving her Ka-Bar Dozier. It's got to be a top tier $15 EDC blade if I ever seen one, not that I've seen many... but damn that blade is awesome.

^Adding those to The List

I carry my Glock G27, Cold Steel Recon 1 pocket knife, and a Quark Mini AA2 flashlight everywhere I go... I use my pocket knife and flashlight on a weekly, if not close to daily, basis. Sure I can live without them, but the added convenience of having them is awesome. YMMV. I think it's a shame these things are VERY affordable yet most people don't take advantage of the technology available to them to help make their life easier. Buy quality, buy once, keep forever.

I don't need to carry anything. I choose to. Just like you don't need to put on a seat belt but you probably still do.

I'd carry only one thing but my knife doesn't shoot bullets, my gun doesn't emit light, and my light can't cut things. I also carry a lighter, ferro rod, water purification tablets, medicine, and some other stuff.
Think it's overkill? Well, I'm a forester and shit happens.

I'm in the woods/in the middle of nowhere a lot, but really I'd carry almost all the same junk anyway. I probably wouldn't carry a fire starter or water purification tabs if I never went in the woods.

It's really no big deal. We all prepare for the unknown, some are just more prepared than others.

By escalating a situation that would have resolved itself otherwise. Assuming you carry the knife for self defense (you are not sharpening pencils with it obviously), what the hell kind of situation would you ever use it in? Knives only work well when you have the element of surprise, i.e for attacking and not defending yourself.

Gun is a little bit more practical for self defense purposes, as sometimes just brandishing it can make your problem go away. But are you really ready to fire it out in public? How many situations have you encountered that warrants you to do so? Most of the time having a gun actually escalates the problem. Also guns are more prone to injure people due to accidental discharge.

And also you have to worry about taking it with you/leaving it in the car when you go to places where guns are not allowed.

Again, I can see where weapons can be useful at home in case of a break in, and they should be safer at home where it can be stored properly and where the element of surprise is on your side. Or if you live in a shitty neighborhood/encounter wild animals fairly consistently. But people that live around campus will almost certainly never need to use a gun or a knife for self-defense unless they are involved with doing something illegal.

you reply as if we are all currently students as NCSU.... most of the people posting in this thread (and you're no spring chicken) are out of college and on their own.

- Pocket knives are useful tools.... nobody here wants to get into a knife fight
- flashlights tend to 'shed light on the situation'
- in nc we have the privelige to carry a concealed handgun; it's a personal responsibility to maintain control of one's weapon while doing so... and no, most people dont go around brandishing their weapon.... or starting gun fights because they have one.

umad, bro?

Not mad, just curious why people go through the inconvenience of having the entire toolbox in their pockets at all times. Pocket knives are useful tools, but Fumbler's picture shows a Victorinox AND a Native. One of them is a better tool, one of them is a better weapon. Flashlights are almost necessary for certain lines of work, but for most people's day to day activities the cellphone light is more than adequate, no need to carry a Surefire everywhere you go. Nothing wrong with a concealed handgun except for the inconvenience of not taking it to places where it is specifically prohibited (which is a lot of places). Just honestly curious how often do you guys get to use all this stuff you lug around or if it makes you feel that much safer. I know not everyone here is in NCSU area, that's why I asked where you guys live that you would need all that.

The victorinox and native are two very different tools, both of which suck as weapons and aren't carried as weapons. I'll use either almost every day, mostly for trimming nails but also for opening packages, shaving a core sample from a tree, cutting food, etc.
The flashlight probably gets the most use. It's easy to check for locked doors at work when the lights are out, I can spotlight my dogs when they're at the back of the yard, and how many times are you looking for something behind/under a desk or dark toolbox?
The gun really isn't inconvenient. I just slip it in my waistband when I put my keys in my pocket. I just leave it in my car when I'm somewhere that doesn't allow carry. It's no big deal. You seem to think its as inconvenient as lugging around a shotgun. To me it's just part of my wardrobe.

Like I've said, you do a lot of shit that you don't need to. I lock the doors to my house even though I KNOW nobody would turn the knob when they hear our dogs barking and snarling. Locking the deadbolt on my house is more cumbersome than putting my gun in my waistband. I hope to never need my gun but again, just because nothing bad has ever happenned and the likelihood is low, you can't see the future and shit still happens. I happen to feel perfectly safe handling and carrying a gun, so why not carry it?
I keep a tire repair kit and small air compressor in my truck even though I have a perfectly good spare tire. Do you think that's silly too?

You've got to get some stuff straight. Your weapon shouldn't escalate a situation; if it does then you are in the wrong and you are no longer innocent. This is the mentality they teach you when you take the concealed handgun class.
If I pull out a gun (or even a knife) then I've already made the decision to hurt someone. A lot.
If its not bad enough that I need to hurt someone then no weapon has any business being out.

I don't have a lot of time, but I wanted to throw my 2 cents in..

Quote :
"By escalating a situation that would have resolved itself otherwise."

That's a judgement call. Just because you have an option doesn't necessarily mean someone has to use it each and every time they "can." I don't know anyone who conceal carries a firearm or a pocket knife who is on a vendetta to hurt someone else. Most people just want their safety to be left alone and if you encroach on that, there may be consequences. But if you "let it be" as they say, you don't have anything to worry about.

Quote :
"Assuming you carry the knife for self defense (you are not sharpening pencils with it obviously), what the hell kind of situation would you ever use it in? "

I don't carry a knife for self defense. I could utilize it as such if in a horrible situation (ie mass shooting) and I couldn't/didn't CC. If I can't get out or I have a clear shot to take the threat out, I'm going to use all available tools I can. I'm not going to be a sitting target.

Quote :
"But are you really ready to fire it out in public?"

If necessary to save an innocent life, my own, or my family's yes. I train myself to be comfortable and knowledgeable with handling my firearm. I don't like to have my life or my loved ones threatened.

Quote :
" How many situations have you encountered that warrants you to do so? "

None, but all it takes is one. There's a saying that in life you regret more the things you didn't do than the things you did...

Quote :
"Most of the time having a gun actually escalates the problem. Also guns are more prone to injure people due to accidental discharge. "

Support? Credible Evidence? Also keep in mind, yes, there may be cases, but what's the perspective on those cases. I'm not denying that guns can potentially escalate a situation, however, compare that to how many situations were properly extinguished because of a firearm. I'm sure you'll find that more common things (ie: vehicles) are more threatening to public safety than firearms.
