The cleaned up print (Alien) on Blu-Ray is a whole new experience. It seriously looks better now than any of the other remasters.
I love Aliens, but I'm more of a suspense / horror guy so Alien wins for me hands down.

What I liked about it is that it left a lot of the background detail up to your own imagination and was mysterious. The last movie that I can recall doing this for me was The Matrix. 3/30/2012 9:51:23 AM |

So based off of the trailor it is looking very similar to Alien. There are two strong female charaters, a curious dude that opens up pandoras box, an android and... a token black guy. I hope that the plot isn't just a carbon copy of the original movie cuz that would just be lame.
They need to change up a clasic but still manage to impress, kinda like what T4 did. 3/30/2012 6:48:54 PM |

Agreed. As I said earlier, I love the first three. I cant rate which one I like best between 1 and 2 because they have different feels. If I really had to choose, Id say I like Alien a little bit more, simply because the unknown, creepiness, claustrophobia, and atmosphere are amazing. The entire chapter on the planet and derelict ship is awesome, with the added element of Gigers amazing work.3/30/2012 8:04:26 PM |

I think some fans don't really want to acknowledge the third film as part of the set. I'm not sure about Resurrection. I thought Camron ruined the second one, it looks too much like left over sets from the termniator...what I loved about the first one was the H.R. Giger looking stuff on everything. It kind of looks like Prometheus gets back to that, but it seems like the deleted scene where Dallas gets morphed into an egg needs to be shown to make the ships transformation make sense (ie, the Space Jockey looking mechanical in the prequel and organic in the original)4/13/2012 7:30:37 AM |

the whole "we want the alien for the bio-weapons technology" aka research/science plot that Burke had in the 2nd film just seemed like they couldn't come up with anything else
I don't really have a problem with Ripley killing herself to kill the alien, I was just hoping for a little more.
[Edited on April 13, 2012 at 11:46 AM. Reason : the 3rd movie just seemed like it was trying too hard to kill the franchise]

I'm pretty sure the ending of Alien 3 was meant to be the ending of the franchise (or at least Ripley) They didn't write it ending to set up Resurrection (which was awful)
^ The 'we want aliens for bio weapons' idea was there since Alien.

Exactly, the same "we want the aliens for weapons" plot was rehashed in 2 and 3. I'm not saying that Alien 3 was bad but it wasn't even close to the other films.
Not one film tried to explore the creatures in depth which I was hoping 3 would do before I realized it was a "an alien gets loose in a prison and kills everyone" plot.
[Edited on April 13, 2012 at 11:50 AM. Reason : it just wasn't on par with the rest]

from wikipedia: In the original Alien, the facehugger is shown to be able to "spit" acid, melting the faceplate of Kane's helmet and allowing the creature immediate access to the inside. This ability is also exhibited by adult Aliens in Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection; much like a spitting cobra, they use it to blind and immobilize their victims
[Edited on April 13, 2012 at 12:38 PM. Reason : the fault isnt that they could spit, its how could they possibly contain them knowing they can spit]4/13/2012 12:36:47 PM |
Axelay All American 6276 Posts user info edit post |
I never really thought that the facehugger "spit" acid so much as it has a small quantity of it to excrete it when it has to. It'd be a one-shot deal sorta like a bee stinger, I guess, since the facehugger's only real purpose in life is to impregnate a host and then die. I was trying to rationalize how the colonists on LV-426 could have kept two live facehuggers in the stasis bottles. Since you see the facehugger attach itself to Kane's helmet before it actually gets through, I felt like this made a little more sense. The facehuggers the colonists captured/surgically removed must have used up their acid secretion, and when the colonists put 'em in the base stasis tubes, they couldn't secrete any more to escape.
Full-grown aliens spitting acid like a snake, though... that's a little harder for me to explain away. If they could do that, then why did they have to sacrifice the one early in Resurrection in order to melt away the cell? Why not just spit at it? And if the aliens themselves are aware of the destructive capability of their blood, then how could they ever truly be contained? (The old Dark Horse comics touch on this, in case anyone cares.)
I'm overanalyzing again. Sorry! 4/13/2012 2:17:03 PM |
V0LC0M All American 21263 Posts user info edit post |
I don't believe any of that.
I think the facehugger melting through the helmet was something that they flat out missed in the first film. Why didn't it melt Caine's face off? Why did it stop at the plastic? Their blood melts through the solid steel (too many examples of this in all 4 films). A plastic shield on a helmet wouldn't stop shit.
I don't remember any spitting Aliens in Alien 3 but I haven't seen that in a while. Regardless, that crap was done to cover up a simple mistake IMO. 4/13/2012 6:08:55 PM |

^It's been a long time sine I've seen Alien 3 but wasn't the main one in that based off a dog and not a human? Maybe that has something to do with it? Although I'd think a dog based alien would be more likely to spit since dogs have lots of saliva and drool all over the place. 4/13/2012 6:59:35 PM |

Alien3 is great and under appreciated. It goes back to the dark, claustrophobic feeling of the first one, and makes the alien seem much more imposing since they cant easily kill it. Also, I personally love the ending of Alien3 because it ends on an absolutely depressing and almost hopeless feeling. Yes, she kills the alien and queen, but the ending still has a very down and hopeless feeling to it. And if I recall, they use the audio of Ripleys last transmission from the original ending, which is also kind of hopeless. I wish more horror/sci fi type movies ended on a hopeless and dark ending, fuck all that happy bullshit.
Alien Resurrection is pure shit, and should not be considered cannon or part of the series by any true fan IMO.

You know, if it's an acid in the traditional sense, acids don't "eat through" any material you can come up with. They react with many metals, but not glass. What do you think acids are stored in?
Also, haven't seen the international trailer posted in this thread:

It suffered from that 70s and early 80s motif of a shit-ton of pointless dialog to set up the characters. Also, because space travel was kind of a big deal during that time, they spent forever on landing the spacecraft with all the radio chatter of the different systems and checks. It took 10 damned minutes to land the ship.
Once they go check out the derelict spacecraft it picks up. And picks up nicely.4/16/2012 9:12:19 AM |
