Another way to succeed in DD is to seek out the "rare gems" of dumpsters. Places that throw out specialized items, advertising, scrap metal, etc. A lot of businesses trash valuable stuff. I wish I could think of some Aesop Fable that gives light to the wisdom behind the action.
Bicycles come in handy for scoping out spots. Anytime I'm riding around leisurely and I see a big open top dumpster I'll pull up to it and see whats inside. If I see 100 lbs of scrap aluminum or 10 lbs of scrap copper I'd be foolish not to get my truck and pull it out of there, no?
And it truly is a lot of fun because you never know what you're going to find. 1/16/2012 3:49:29 AM |

I worked at CVS through college and they would throw out boxes of discontinued make-up. My manager constantly told us we could not take anything that was being thrown away but I'd go back there once we closed and would pull the box out that I had just neatly placed in there. 1/16/2012 10:37:44 AM |

Solid ground like asphalt, concrete, tile, etc. is fine. Malleable surfaces like dirt, grass or carpet are much more sketch and should be assessed on a case by case basis. 1/17/2012 3:38:39 PM |

I love it when the government fights itself. Law enforcement agencies have argued successfully in court for years that once you place garbage at the curb it is no longer the property of anyone, and therefore is fair game for police to rummage through without a search warrant.2/28/2012 9:20:12 PM |

The shit is being recycled no matter what.
Which should be the only issue here.
Who cares who is doing it.
Most people throw put their stuff out the night before.
If you spent all night, eight hours, driving around collecting, I wonder how much you could get a night.
55cents a pound for aluminum ads up after awhile.

Obviously the city doesn't give a shit about recycling. If the government still let them bury it in a hole you can bet they would prefer that. The city loses a bundle on those recycling trucks, and the contractor that processes it makes a bundle. It's a perfect scenario for corruption, and the mob hates competition. 2/28/2012 10:02:00 PM |

One of the guys I work with picks up all the food that food lion throws out. They know him now so they just wait for him to get there and roll it to the door and let him put it in his truck vs having to carry it to the dumpsters themselves.
He feeds all of the food to the pigs he is raising.

Not sure if serious.
I know this thread is about eating garbage, but recycling companies do not bribe the city to win recycling contracts. Well at least not in the Raleigh/Durham area, up north, yeah they are likely a lot bribes due to all of the organized crime and corruption.
Companies pay rebates to the city if the recyclable volume is high enough to justify the rebate. The rebate money typically goes to the solid waste/environmental department funds to help offset other costs and hopefully reduce taxes or fees.

Someone was moving out of an apartment near where I live... scored a nice crockpot, a toaster oven, a toaster, and some brooms. All in working order. Only recently did the toaster oven crap out on me. Some of my current wardrobe comes from a dumpster behind a clothing store. Not a stain or even a tear!
When I worked in construction, we would dumpster dive for scrap metal. I was surprised by how much $$ we made selling it for scrap. It would have gone to the landfill had we not done so.
I worked at a grocery store for a few years. They would donate as much as they could to local food banks when things were nearing their sell by date. They would only throw stuff out when no one came for it. I've had to throw away food before that I knew was perfectly fine just because of company policy. If anything at all that was refrigerated left the front door, even if it only went 5 feet before the customer wanted to return it... Trash! I had to throw away several bags of shrimp and some rib-eyes before... Too bad I couldn't have set up a grill out back! 3/10/2012 7:34:39 PM |

What kind of fucking clothing store throws out clothes? That's pretty aggravating. It's considerably easier to donate a pile of clothes than find a food bank for a dumpster full of produce. 3/12/2012 8:57:21 PM |

Believe it or not, it was a Pac-Sun. I still cannot see why they threw the clothes out. Easily $500 worth at retail. I kept the things I liked and gave the rest to friends. 3/12/2012 10:56:41 PM |
