A kid got stuffed in a trunk in the RM Walmart parking lot & dumped in the ghetto (edgecombe) somewhere a couple years ago. The kidnapper didn't know the kid, just picked one & stole him. It wasn't in the wee hours of the morning either.

I also don't go to the RM mall after 7 or dark, whichever comes first. If these stores would just quit letting people loiter around w/o buying things then there'd be far less of a problem I think.

Hehe, I don't feel it's completely necessary to carry a gun. Like I said, I went where ever I wanted before I carried a gun. I carry just because you never know. Freak shit happens, like being stuffed into a car with 3 other thugs in a walmart parking lot in the middle of the afternoon.

If I ever felt unsafe unless I had a gun then I wouldn't go there in the first place. If you grew up in either place and have interacted with the thug-ish population then you'd know there are few places in Durham or Rocky Mount that are that bad.

My point doesn't require Durham to be a post-apocalyptic wasteland where there is a significant chance that you'll need to brandish your gun on any given trip. Risks are a part of life, yes, that's reality. But to the extent that someone doesn't know what to look for, or how to identify the bad parts of town, which you apparently do, they could justifiably feel that they are taking an unknown risk, otherwise known as a fucking stupid risk.

The chance of me needing a gun is miniscule. Chances are I, or anyone I know, may never need one in our entire lives. I still carry a gun because I still don't know that for sure and because I can. I am not a concealed carry person, but a case could easily be made that based on the rates most people, in most cities, should carry. However, the counter argument is whether or not having a gun actually prevents the violence. I know for certain most of the homicide victims in Oakland were also carrying at the time, as well as the people in Durham

The big question is what is your cutoff for danger. Is it 1 in 1000? 1 in 10,000? 1 in a million? If you play those odds out over 10 years do you know what the probability of having an incident will be in each case? Turns out walking through bad parts of Oakland every day for 10 years you get pretty good odds that you will be a victim of a violent crime. IMHO anything more risky than 1 in 10,000 chance of death/injury requires being prepared.

I always got a kick out of fat people telling me that I was a fool for skydiving, when the stats for obesity related deaths are so awful. It's more a perceived danger thing in that case. Not many people truly try to maximize their odds, and a lot of people just don't give a fuck

At any rate, don't take life too seriously, no one gets out alive.

I lived in Durham for 2 years, in 11th and 12th grade. My dad still lives there, so I'm in Durham a fair amount when I'm home visiting. I would say that Durham has some of the very best and the very worst of NC, and furthermore that Raleigh has nothing that compares to the Brightleaf Square area. Also, just like BobbyDigital said, there is less sprawl, cookie-cutter neighborhoods as far as the eye can see, etc. It has resisted becoming suburbia-hell somewhat better than the rest of the Triangle. The bad areas are largely pretty easy to avoid, too. There is a greater than average amount of buffoonery at the local government level there, but overall it can be a pretty good place to live.

I organize a group of dads that meet every week and try to find places that don't charge a fee to use their facilities. All the public pools in Raleigh charge a fee, and for those that don't live within the City of Raleigh it's much higher than residents. Over the course of the summer this can really add up.

^^^^ I was in a conversation the other day with a parent in Durham looking to enroll her children in public school. She offered this tidbit of information. Durham has one of the highest rates of free/reduced lunch rates in the state with over 62% of students on free or reduced price lunches. 1 school in particular had a rate of 98% reduced/free lunch students.

She and I agree, Main street and downtown has come a long way, but Durham is not quite the affluent capitol that Chapel Hill has become. There are pockets of exponential wealth and wisdom, but overall it is a place where the poor are typically overlooked by the academics that are populating it.

She did mention that she knows a lot of people who get married in Durham and then move to Chapel Hill so they can continue to work in the Duke network but have their children attend public schools in the top tier of the state.

I live in Cary and "visit" Durham several times a week so my views on how it's progressed are as an outsider. I can say it seems a much better place than when I was a kid, but it is still not a city/county I would want to move my family.

Lived in Durham for 3 years, don't own a gun. No problems encountered. No time when I felt like I needed protection. And, as has been said, staying out of the parts of the city that aren't particularly safe isn't that hard to do. Sometimes you have to drive through the less affluent areas to get where you're going, but you're in a car. Unless your fear is getting carjacked, nothing to worry about there. If it looks really sketchy, turn around and go back the way you came. Not rocket science.

I will agree that I don't know if I'd want to entrust my (future) children's education to the Durham county schools. As I do not have any currently, we'll see if that is the case in the future.

I went to a wedding in the new tobacco warehouse downtown. We also ate at Tyler's. It's surprising what they have done.
