Quote :
"I just received notification from a reliable source that the author of the article "Evolution: theory not fact" has been receiving harassing e-mails, phone calls, and heckling over social media sites that the author is involved in. The article was an unfortunate incident of someone who was not fully informed on a topic they were writing about. This individual made several assertions that have caused controversy, and provoked thoughtful conversation and heated discourse. This article was an editorial, and I find it despicable that ANYONE at our University is subject to harassment for sharing an opinion, even if misguided. I'm ashamed, and I hope no one here has been involved in harassing the author of the article.

In light of these developments this is also a notice that any meme posts, or posts meant to ridicule the author, and not discuss the content of the article will be removed as they promote a culture of online bullying, and I will not tolerate that from this community. Be the voice of reason. Educate those who may not be fully informed, do not belittle them for not knowing or having a different opinion.

edit To be clear, this is not about simple ridicule or public humiliation, this is specifically referencing a series of threatening e-mails and messages sent to or directed at the author.

There was a time on TWW when someone (FroshKiller?) would point out that what everyone was calling an "article" was actually a "column". And in this case, the Viewpoint column is essentially a soapbox for the author (sometimes pretending to speak for the entire Technician crew as a whole) to speak based on their point of view and build the column off of their opinions and perspective.

That being said, the viewpoint section in the Technician has been suspect for a very long time, sometimes pushing the limits farther, a la The Daily Tarheel, with their views generally being annoyingly opposite from the majority of the Technician's audience. Unlike the DTH, at least the viewpoint section is only a small percentage of the Technician and that the majority of the paper is (or at least, used to be) readable without any head shaking in disgust and disappointment. Hopefully, the crossword and sudoku are still being printed and the same puzzles you solved last week are "accidentally" being reprinted on a regular basis.

really shows what a bunch of drips inhabit some of these sites

"A grocery list of what not to do

I currently have one of the worst possible jobs; I work as a cashier at Food Lion. It's not really the worst job, it's just that when people shop at grocery stores they become some of the dumbest people on the face of the earth. When people walk into Food Lion, their IQ drops by 30 points.

Because you should care about the opinions of Food Lion employees, you should follow these steps so the cashiers don't make fun of you on their lunch break:

1. Do not ask me if I work here.

Even though my nametag says "Welcome to Food Lion" and I am clearly wearing a uniform, I do not work here. I just wear this uniform for fun. In fact, I just check people out at registers for free, because I love it so much. But don't tell anybody, I don't want to get caught.

2. Do not ask me if my register is open.

If my light is on and I'm standing at my register and I'm checking someone out, I am open. It's not that difficult to determine if I am open to check out your items.

3. Do not ask me if something is on sale.

Our sale prices change every week as well as the items on sale. There are hundreds of things on sale at once. You really expect me to know that? Just let me scan your MVP card and then the register will say whether or not the item is on sale.

4. We don't have that.

No, we do not have more than one brand of buttermilk. And, no, we don't have cheesecloth.

5. Don't ask me where things are located in the store.

I understand questions about things that are legitimately hard to find because, granted, some things are impossible to find in any grocery store. But, do not ask me where the fruits and vegetables are. Do not ask me where the cereal is. And, for the love of God, do not ask me where the frozen waffles are.

6. I really don't care if you shop at another grocery store.

People yell and scream all the time and vow to never come back. They threaten me with promises that they will be shopping at Kroger or Harris Teeter instead. Honestly, I don't care. Whether or not you shop at Food Lion does not determine how much money I make. I work for a salary, not commission.

7. Don't tell me how to do my job.

If you work at Food Lion now or have worked there previously, I really don't want your input. If you're currently not in a Food Lion uniform, you have no right to tell me how to do my job. I may make a mistake, but I know how to correct it. I don't need you to tell me how you fix it at your Food Lion because, guess what, I work here, too.

8. If you don't want it, don't make it my problem.

If you pick up an item in one part of the store and decide in another part of the store that you do not want it, you have two options. Either walk your lazy butt back to the other part of the store and return the item or, at least, give it to an employee to put back.

There is nothing more frustrating then finding a jar of peanut butter sitting on a shelf with the eggs. Even worse is finding a bottle of wine behind a box of cereal. Not only did the customer not put the wine back, but they made it hard to find.

Possibly the worst thing though is taking a refrigerated item and leaving it elsewhere where it can potentially go bad before an employee finds it.

Remember, be nice to your cashiers. Their opinion matters."

^I don't think comments calling her moronic can be classified as true, that's definitely an opinion, not fact, nor theory.

All I see are people calling her moronic because she doesn't believe in something that is called a theory, and cannot be immediately or definitively proved right in front of her like gravity can be.

When you think about it in that light, I guarantee you that half the people commenting on that article are NOT scientists, are NOT biology majors, and obtained all of their information by reading articles and books, or by attending lectures in which a man/woman stood in front of them, and talked about his belief in the theory of evolution.

Is that so different than someone reading the bible, and attending Church on Sunday to hear a preacher talk about his beliefs?

They are complaining about how she is so stupid, but most likely half of them have never been in a lab and actually seen the solid evidence of evolution.

When it comes down to it, both parties are putting their faith in the words and written works of another, unless of course, they have proven evolution themselves and have experience with it.

Just sayin, they shouldn't be so hard on her.

it is very different. I think that she knew she was going to get a backlash, hopefully she can handle it. I am surprised at the extreme outrage (given that this is the south, and let's face it we got a lot of bible thumpers) so I hope that no one is harassing her.

I work in a lab, and I have seen the evidence of evolution, so it does seriously bother me that she will not even consider proven facts or bother to show us anything that could disprove it. She is at a university that is geared toward science, she has unlimited resources to be educated, yet she plunks herself into this class so that she can feel like a minority and feel persecuted??

It cannot be shown in a 5 second demonstration, why? because it is a complex biological phenomena.

the bible is a book.

I stocked shelves at Food Lion in my college years....here's how those views and opinions differ for a stocker:

1. Do not ask me if I work here.
I'm pushing around a huge cart of boxes and putting them on the shelves. If you think I don't work there, you deserve the business end of my box cutter....and I'm surgical with that mofo...

3. Do not ask me if something is on sale.
Don't mind this so much. It says it on the tag on the shelf if it is, and I can point you to that.

5. Don't ask me where things are located in the store.
Please ask me - it's like a challenge/game - there's nothing you can even think of that I can't tell you where it is if we have it in the store.

Ok - the rest is mindless drivel

Definition of the words "fact" and "theory" distract from the discussion. It doesn't matter how you go about it, this is about knowledge and certainty.

The anti-evolution sentiment is that there is a strong possibility that evolution might be wrong, like it might rain tomorrow. That view is completely wrong. If someone never got the evidence, then yes, evolution can validly be said to be uncertain for them. Anyone who completed a college biology class should no longer be in this group of people.

Biology is about evolution.

The proposition that we should focus on is "the tree of life". Provided that someone, anyone, agrees that a tree of life exists with the hierarchical structure and innumerable extinct species, then we're done. That is evolution and any alternative theory to accept that tree of life and deny evolution is virtually semantics.

There is no solid line between evidence and direct observation. With genetics we "see" the tree of life. There is as little basis to refute the genetic relationships (which lead directly to the structure of the tree of life) we see through technology as there is to deny a digital photograph.

i agree with the above-

i believe in evolution but i dont go around beating people over the head with it. i also get angry when im beat over the head with religion. the fact of the matter is this-

the people harassing her, making fun of her, etc, are just like any other bullies and have a lot of problems. this doesnt mean they should be kept from bullying, as thats their right, but those actually calling her and making threats need to have the shithammer brought down on them.

maybe as a child they were touched by their youth pastor, maybe their girlfriend dumped them at some religious "rock" concert, maybe they faceplanted while waterskiing at some stupid youth trip, maybe their parents are overbearing religious psychos, or maybe its just the cool thing to do in college (make fun of biblethumpers).

the REAL story here is how much of a NON issue this is becoming. these people arent found exclusively in biology/evolution type classes. you see this shit in geology, astronomy, and im sure a host of others. its so commonplace why do we even notice it? its just another college level sideshow.

do they subtract from the learning experience? are they a distraction in class? no, not really. if you knew the material you could easily defend yourself against them in a cool/collected manner. instead all you ever see are flustered professors and students laughing under their breath at their "retardedness." regardless, i see it as an opportunity to engage in debate and the number 1 rule of debate IMO is to leave emotions out of it. as soon as the professor loses his cool, "oh shit another creationist," or as soon as the standard gaggle of college hipsters jump onto the professors team because its "funny," the sooner they lose credibility.

now its pretty obvious this girl is more than a little uninformed, but the manner in which her peers are trying to "educate" her is naive and borderline disgusting. you think she is ignorantly clinging to outdated mysticism while simultaneously acting like animals yourselves.

and round and round we go-

TLDR version is this,

she has her opinion and you have yours, you have one belief and she has another, yours is backed up with demonstrable proof, hers is basically not.

so what do you do? well if youre a student/her peer you dont act like a savage. you say there is no room for this type of idiocy at the college level yet your expose it by hounding her. and if youre the goddamn professor you sure as hell dont lose your shit. you have a PHD for fuck sake and youre letting some freshman get to you!
