what kind of rigs/bait do u guys use for carp? we were surrounded by some monsters all in the shallows this weekend at hyco lake but could get a bite for shit. i tried bread but i cant get it to stay on the hook. should i try something else like sweet corn or chick peas?

i always used white bread and mashed it into a smooth ball on a treble or hook, go light on the cast

otherwise, i've made wheaties balls with just hot water + mashed weaties + baked in the over to firm them up. Supposedly "better" bait

If they're not biting bread, they may be grass carps

I was out at Falls last weekend. Caught a ton of crappie and a bunch of white perch. Managed to catch a 10lb catfish on a 12 ft crappie rod. That was a fun fight. The fish are shallow right now, holding in cover getting ready to spawn. The bass seem to be more active on the upper end of the lake. The water has come up a bunch this week and is above normal pool for the first time i can remember in a long time, so just get out there and flip the cover. Ill be out there Saturday morning, probably crappie fishing again, but i may bring along a couple bass rigs in case i get tired of catching crappie.

crappie have been hitting the mepps pretty well the past few days, and the kayak has been very relaxing with the wind just trolling me down the banks.

any one got an interest in a fly rod? heavy action, star-rod maker. graphite, 2-piece, 9ft 9 in, brand new rod with hard case. my best guess is that is a salt rod...but if you live in pike, muskie, steelhead, bonefish territory it would be right for the casting.

my dad has a stocked pond in his back yard. nobody ever fishes it and they stocked it when they built the house ~15 years ago. it's not even fair how easy it is to land huge catfish. my sister and I can put plain bred on a hood and there will be bites almost immediately and we'll pull in a fish every 5 minutes or so. also have carp and bass.

I need to get out deep sea fishing soon. I used to pier fish a lot but got sick of pulling in so many nurse sharks and sting rays. I've never been trolling, that's high on my list of things to do

Looks like I'm scrapping the old boat and buying a new one this fall. Kinda sad about it, but excited about a potential new one.

Restricted, where did you go out of? MHC?

finished up the touches on my fishing kayak, took her out for the first time on Lake Crabtree. Caught 6 small channels on chicken liver and learned a lot about the changes i need to make on my kayak, especially if I'm going to take it on larger, choppier bodies of water

been fishing from the bank out at Jordan lake. Met a guy whose been doing alot of fishing out there, and he gave me some pointers on how he's been catching fish. Basically from where I was at the only thing you'll really catch is catfish. Been using the same bottom rig I use for salt water fishing, prop the pole up and attach a bell to the end. sit. and. wait.

I even use shrimp for bait, and it seems to work well. Only been out once since trying this, but I pulled 3 smaller catfish over a couple of hours. And even got to finish the Jimmy V autobiography since all I do is wait for the bells to start ringing.

So after this weekend a new goal has been set for me...

Catch a bluefin tuna with no help at all.

That means put the boat where the tuna are. Set the gear. Reel the tuna in. Put a tail rope on the tuna. Get the tuna on the boat. Clean the tuna.

It's gonna be a pain in the ass but I'm excited about accomplishing this goal

several more trout this morning. 2 were legal. had something huge take a topwater plug around 6 am. fought it for about a minute until my 15 lb flurocarbon leader was cut. not sure what happened. it didn't hit or fight like a gar, so i doubt it was cut by teeth. maybe a gill plate or oyster shell cut it. if it was a trout it was a damn citation. i felt sick when the line went slack.

Quote :
"Cheater nabbed at Wylie BFL 5/7/2012

FLW announced today that a North Carolina angler who finished 3rd in a BFL at Lake Wylie on Saturday has been disqualified and banned from the organization's future events. John Hoyle (pictured) of Rutherfordton, N.C. was penalized under BFL Rule No. 9 (Sportsmanship) when one of the fish he brought to the weigh-in was found to have an 11-ounce weight in its gullet.

Hoyle forfeited a $1,082 prize check. Ironically, the 11 ounces didn't help him, as his bag without the additional weight would've registered 13-01 – an ounce more than original 4th-place finisher Rob Digh. He'd have needed another 11 ounces to reach runner-up Roger Pope's 14-07 tally (Brian Huskins won with 14-08).

Hoyle's profile at FLWOutdoors.com credits him with having won more than $8,000 during his career in the BFLs. More than half of that total was amassed last year, when he pocketed $4,394 for winning a March 19 event at Wylie with a 16-04 bag.

The tournament's co-angler standings were not affected by Hoyle's disqualification.
