face is right about the fouls. what good does ending a game with 4 fouls get you? you wasted time you could have been on the court. you should come out to make sure you're completely rested to give it all you have for your time remaining, but not just so we can have you for the last few plays.

when we were playing tentative defense late in the 2nd half because we were afraid of fouling out (even though players fouled out anyway), Duke took advantage of that and started driving to the basket since they figured we wouldn't play as aggressive with our foul trouble

we shouldve just told TDT to stand in the paint and contest any shot, and hard...who gives a shit if TDT fouls out

This game has me very nervous. It is basically our last chance to lock up a tournament bid. As much as I want to think differently we aren't beating unc. It's a terrible matchup. A loss today probably solidifies another NIT. No pressure though.

This is just wrong. With the starters out, we lost a 20 point lead. With the starters in, we built the half time lead. Even tentative defense by our starters is better than defense by fucking TDT. AJ got owned by set curry, and TDT and Painter didn't grab any boards. That's why we lost the lead.

Not to mention that our offense is much better with Leslie owning the plumlees, Howell grabbing the boards, and CJ making hustle plays. Did you notice that we also had trouble scoring with the bench players??

Having TDT foul is the worst possible option, and it shows that you really don't know anything about basketball. Since Duke was in the bonus, every foul by TDT basically gives Duke a 70% chance at 2 points. With Leslie or Howell back there, even if they are playing bad defense, Duke makes the drive shot 50%, tops. It is unintelligent to give Duke at 77% shot instead of a 50% shot.


- If we had an even smarter coaching staff, they would tell our players who are in foul trouble to play just as hard with 4 fouls as they do with 2 fouls. That way, we build the lead up to 30 before they foul out with 5 mins left.

- If they do start playing tentatively with 4 fouls, the lead is only 15 with 5 mins left. Still, our bench players may have been able to hold a 15 point lead for 5 mins.

- Instead, we picked the option that gave us the fewest quality minutes from our starters. We benched our star players and the lead was only 5 with 5 mins left. Then we brought them back in, they shot like shit for the entire time they were in AND they played tentative defense while we were down (not when we had a 20 point lead). Then, we had to start fouling intentionally and making desperation plays with 1 min left. At best, we got 2 minutes of quality play from them after we benched them at the 10 minute mark.

I would be surprised that many of you don't get that we picked the worst possible option available to us, but apparently some of you don't even understand the fucking Monty Hall Problem, which is just mind-boggling considering most of you are college graduates.

the playing with 4 fouls argument assumes that every moment of the game is equally important as every other moment of the game and thats just not true. The last 5 minutes of the game are way more important than a random five minute span in the middle of the second half. You always want your best players on the court in end of game situations and if you have to sit them in the middle of the second half to increase your chances of having them at the end of the game then you do that.

In fact, it's not self evident why starters minutes are more important at different points in the game.

My two cents. i think a player in "foul trouble" should sit, but come right back in. The reason is the other team will then go after that player and try to get the 4th or 5th foul. also the player with 3 or 4 fouls will play at a lower level on D to try not to get the next foul.

I say bench him, tell him play aggressively smart and don't commit dumb foul away from the basket. and send him right back in. I think coaches hold players out way to long.
