I can drive it 300+ consistently. Driving it 300+ and straight is a different story.
Thanks for the heads up. Today is just creeping by, I'm read to be done with work and go chase the little white ball all weekend. 7/27/2012 8:41:58 AM |

You can get into a lot of trouble at TR with an inconsistent driver. I think hole 4 is one where you can drive ~320 to the green, but missing it 5 yards to either side is almost unplayable. 7/27/2012 8:47:43 AM |

I shot 71 and 75 there the 2 times I've played it....really just hit fairways and be around the greens in regulation and you are golden
i guess that's the formula for any golf course...but really...gotta stay in play there or triple bogeys are going to find you

I'm playing both courses at Carolina Trace on Saturday and Tobacco Road on Sunday - never played any of them... how's Carolina Trace? Any tips or suggestions? I already know TR will be a disaster - inconsistent driver and all that... plus, I haven't played much at all lately. 8/6/2012 11:25:49 AM |

I forgot to report back after playing TR for the first time a couple weeks ago. WOW, what a cool course!! I really enjoyed it and can't wait to play it again. It really wasn't as bad as it seems. Visually it can be pretty daunting, but a lot of the huge waste bunkers and impossible trouble doesn't come into play unless you have a really bad mis-hit. Most of the fairways are actually pretty wide and forgiving.
The biggest piece of advice I can offer is to just take what the course gives you. It really is a risk reward course. The farther you try to go off the tee,the narrower the fairway gets and the more trouble comes into play. There are a bunch of holes, especially on the back nine, where I talked my self out of hitting driver (no easy feat) and was so glad I did, because an extra 30-50 yards really didn't make a difference at all on the approach.
There are also a few holes where it looks like you can just give it all you got, but use a rangefinder or the free yardage book wisely so you don't end up driving it through the fairway. I probably had 3-4 strokes I could've avoided by having to punch out of trouble after hitting a good drive and running out of fairway. 8/6/2012 11:59:49 AM |

^The first tee is awesome, then your second shot is blind but as long as you clear the second set of dunes, it's a wide open landing area.
If you're anything like us, when you ride up and step out onto the second tee, you'll think, "W...T...F?!? Where is the green?!?" Then you drive your cart down into and through a bunker and realize how weird and cool the day is going to be. Good luck!! 8/6/2012 1:55:11 PM |

Which clubs do you all prefer...fairway woods or hybrids? What do you carry and why?
Also, besides Golfsmith, who else sells used clubs locally?] 8/13/2012 11:34:12 AM |

I play taylormade fairway woods. I usually carry a 3 and 5 in the bag... Although, I rarely use the 3.
Play-it-again sports at crossroads has decent used clubs. 8/13/2012 11:38:07 AM |

I carry a Taylor Made 3 wood for everything 230 and farther and a 4-hybrid for everything 205-220. That 4-hybrid is way more consistent than my 3-wood, as you might expect. I tried a 2-hybrid for awhile, but never had much occasion to hit it. I also used to have a 5-wood, but it was such a narrow yardage range where I found myself needing it that I took it out and added another wedge instead. 8/13/2012 12:05:25 PM |

They guy at Golfsmith is a fan of the 1-4-7 wood setup, then starting up with a 5 hybrid after that. What would I lose by not having a 3 or 4 hybrid?
My thinking is it would be hard to get out of the rough and go 180+ yards if I had to resort to hitting the 5 hybrid as my "get out of the rough have a long way to go" club. What else am I giving up? 8/13/2012 6:12:20 PM |

^that's got "FEELS GOOD MAN" written all over it.
^^I don't know of anyone besides really old men that hit a 7-wood. Also, I don't think I've seen a 4-wood in anyone's bag in like 15 years. Maybe I'm behind the times, but that seems like an odd setup. Whatever works for you though, different strokes for different folks (no pun intended). I agree that you're not going to want to try and hit out of deep rough with a 4 wood or a 7 wood.
I meant to mention earlier that you can try Dick's Sporting Goods for clubs, as well. If nothing else, you can compare prices b/c Golfsmith does price matching. 8/14/2012 8:30:00 AM |

^^^ Yeah...I'm gonna try out the setup for a while and see how it goes. It does seem odd.
So how many (and which) woods and hybrids do you all carry? I've currently got 1-4-7 woods, 4-5 hybrid, and 6 iron up. Feels like I've got too many clubs : / 8/29/2012 10:35:55 AM |

If you have a 4/5 hybrid, then you don't need a 7 wood. I didn't know that men under the age of 60 even used 7 woods. 8/29/2012 11:26:32 AM |
