Entertaining, maybe not, but very macabre to the point of addicting...

I think it'll be first, and I don't think it'll take too long to get there. I honestly think the goal for his attorneys was to get him LWOP and not the death penalty. Obviously they would prefer 2nd, but in capital cases, most of the time, it's a victory if they aren't sentenced to death.

Think they'll go into sentencing this afternoon? Or start that phase of the trial next week?

Well, we know everyone on the jury is capable of casting a vote in favor of the death penalty, but I wonder if they will.

I'm not against the death penalty in theory, just in application. However, to get seated on a capital case, all the jurors must tell the judge and the attorneys that they are capable of casting a vote for the death penalty, i.e. they are not opposed to it morally. But it's been used very seldom in the past few years, that I don't think they'll vote for it in this case.

i imagine he'll probably want the death after the inmates get a hold of him. i imagine they won't look very favorby on beating, raping and leaving an incapicated woman to die.

Really not as much violence in prison as everyone thinks. And they really don't care about murders. You only get alienated for being a pervert, and even then, it's not violent alienation, just shunned.

I'd bet they care about murders who were potentially motivated by racism.

From the way he's absolutely shown no remorse or emotion in the trial I hope they put him down, honestly. From testimony too, he just sounds like a selfish deviant that doesn't deserve to live. Look at all the things they brought up with how he treated his parents. Again, really tries your moralities and beliefs to hear testimony about people like this, their existence in the world, and the crimes they committed to even have this debate brought up. I guess I feel like death should be used sparingly, but this is one which should get it.

I knew this guy about 6 months before he committed the murder when he was trying to get sober. I remember that he relapsed, got married, and very quickly afterwards I was hearing about the murder charge.

I would have never taken this guy to be a murderer/rapist. He was always perfectly friendly to me and others during the period of time when he was trying to get sober. We used to play cards with this guy often at Cup A Joe on Hillsborough Street (fun fact: the name of the card game we used to play was called Killer.). He never gave off any signs that raised red flags in my mind and just about everybody I know who knew him during this time was completely shocked that he was being accused of these crimes because they did not seem to match his personality whatsoever from back then.

From personal experience, I know that when myself or other alcoholics drink we become COMPLETELY different people. It's beyond mere obnoxiousness or loudness; alcoholics can and often do become very violent and horrible when drunk. For a long time after the charges surfaced I had thought Williford to be this kind of drunk and that he just happened to have the most severe consequences of anybody I had ever seen relapse. I looked at it as another reason to stay clean because myself and many others I knew thought it very well could have been us.

Looking back at the trial, it is quite evident that he had several HUGE issues that desperately needed treatment. However, I still contend that had he managed to stay sober, this crime would have never happened and, assuming he dealt with his personal issues in the way typically experienced by one's progress through AA, he would have been a decent guy.

i can't help but wonder if this all could have been avoided with better psychological treatment in the years leading up to this.
