That's fine, just as long as we maximize the minutes they play for us. We have seen that vandy is a total liability. Play our good players, hope we can build a lead, then coast until the end of game free throws.

Don't get why he can't figure out the defense earlier. Just as with last year, we need to do a much better job of stopping the dribbler off of screens.

I expect to see more zone because we lack lock down perimeter defenders and can't afford to put CJL and Howell in a lot of rim defending situations. We have to get better at zone and man defense, because good passing and shooting teams like Michigan will kill our zone. It didn't help that our team isn't used to playing zone and was usually out of position inside.

I've read dozens of post tonight all citing our piss poor defense. And a number of posts crowning Duke as the "best" in the ACC cause K teaches defense and Gott does not.

Well here are the numbers so far this year: Duke held opponents to 40.8% shooting, NCSU 40.2% shooting. Maybe our 3 pt defense is worse... Duke held opponents to 33.0% 3 pt shooting, NCSU 32.8%

We've rebound better than Duke as well, so far.

I don't see a thing wrong with our defense statistically. Our problem is in two key areas:

1) We don't take enough 3 pt shots. We have taken 84 3 pt attempts this year. Our Opponents have made 134 attempts. Our opponents have made 44 3's, we have made only 33. Those 11 more 3's represent 5.5 points per game we are giving up, even though we are shooting a higher 3 pt %

2) We don't take enough free throws, and we missed too many of those we do take. Duke gets 24.9% of it's points from Free Throws; NCSU gets only 17.3% of it's points from Free Throws

Yet we are 4-2 and Duke is 6-0 with almost identical defensive numbers. The differences are FT and 3 pt attempts. We need to shoot more 3 pointers and we need to shoot better at the line. Believe it or not our defense is fine........

the problem with our defense can't be demonstrated "statistically;" just watch any of our games so far, especially the last 3 or 4. It can be fixed though. I still think we have the talent to have a top 10 team we just need to pull it together on both ends of the court.

The old "the other team was on fire" idiotic argument. The other team is always on fire if you play bad defense. 3 point defense is about stopping 3 point attempts the other team wants, and we do very little to stop this.

Bingo. Duke is also much better at forcing turnovers, which lead to the easiest points in the game. Left out that stat. Their defensive efficiency and kenpom defense rating is also much better. Don't let the stats fool you -- we are not fine on defense at all. I applaud your attempt at using evidenced-based reasoning, though.

Michigan doesn't usually shoot threes at all. That's our main weakness defensively.

Eh, maybe I'm misinterpreting this, but lets not go overboard. We have 3 late first-early second round picks and one possible lottery pick in Warren. Great talent for us, but nothing really exceptional. UNC has had teams with multiple lottery picks. Wake had Tim Duncan and Chris Paul. Not together, but those are two of the best basketball players ever. Duke had ..... well mostly a bunch of busts at the NBA level, but some pretty amazing college players. Still, the 2000 chip' team and the team with Deng, Reddick, Duhon, and Shelden Williams were way more talented then our current squad.
