As much as you try to dismiss the Foo Fighters because they are "popular," those arguing for Nirvana and many other "musical greats" are often influenced by same kind of illogical rationalization but in another area. They are great because important people say they are.

I like both Nirvana and Foo Fighters.

Nirvana is unequivocally better in my mind. Foo Fighters has a TON of what I'd call filler songs that should never have been put on an album. Every Nirvana album track is fantastic.

as someone else said, the unplugged album alone puts Nirvana in a class above Foo Fighters entire body of work.

It's easy to say this when Nirvana was active for seven years and the Foo Fighters have been making records for nearly two decades now. Had Cobain never passed and this rock god legacy never been created postmortem how would their body of work look? I can say for sure that not every track would be looked upon the same way it is now. To put it simply, Nirvana made some great music but they also wrote some terrible songs as well. Had they not ended in tragedy I honestly don't think they would have had stood the test of time the way Foo Fighters has.

For you and most of the rest of TWW that are younger and didn't discover Nirvana until well after Cobain's death that might be true. Nirvana's fame now is nowhere near where it was leading up to Cobain's death. It's not like they suddenly became popular after Cobain died.

I'm not saying they did, but it's certainly protected them from a lot of retrospective criticism.

It's a hard topic to debate objectively. For everyone music embodies feelings and memories. For you, Nirvana may represent some great times in your life that the Foo Fighters never did. Or some songs may resonate with a part of you while others feel completely different. so a lot of people will have a certain emotional attachment to the former that will always prevent the comparison to be truly objective.
