I'd say no cuff. They are normally pricier and look stupid IMO.

Seriously. Buy some flat front plain well fitting pants and some decent well fitting oxford shirts.

Then buy a medium sized watch (nothing big for gods sake)l and some round toe shoes that arnt fucking shiny.

You are guaranteed to not look like an idiot.

I'm going to say no cuff...but it's not quite as big a deal as the pleats.

Traditionally...cuffs go with pleats. So no pleats...no cuffs. And cuffs are also traditionally with suits...so if it's just slack, then I'd also say no cuffs.

It's a preference...but I prefer no cuffs.

I just read "cuff[s]" so many times that I now find it incredibly weird.

yeah, wear something with a pattern or wear something matches your belt. i'd shy away from dark solid colors with those unless your treatment made them that much darker.

that makes sense...i like the pattern idea (especially the argyle)

fwiw, the treatment (which is mostly beeswax) DID make them much darker, and there's no longer a color discrepancy between the suede part and the rest of the shoe (and i prefer this)

while we're (somewhat) on the topic...which is preferable: jeans that seem to be the perfect length when standing up, but then show 2 inches above my ankle when i sit (32 length does this) or have them collect a little when standing and then show only right at the ankle when i sit (34 length)? i feel like dress slacks should be the former, but jeans would be okay in the latter

this is basically what the 34s look like, though the fit is a tiny bit slimmer:

just depends on what you feel comfortable in. Height-wise i'm between a 32 and 34L and own both. What's currently in fashion, to go along with slimmer fits, are lengths that don't offer a lot of break. I think this looks really good with a slim cut pair of slacks, but it also looks great in dark denim with a low profile shoe or boot.

And don't be scared to cuff. I'm not talking 1950's 4-inch roll up, but a single flip of the hem .5-1" looks good with certain color/shoe combinations. I do this with a pair of my 34L to cut down on the excess break.

I used to hate when my ankles would show, but that was back when boot cut, wider leg, looser fits, and longer lengths were in fashion. I just threw out 4-5 pairs of jeans like this. After trying them on it's amazing how outdated and unflattering they looked.

this is where i am (or was a couple of months ago)...just gave away all of my old jeans to good will and picked up some new ones

there is nothing wrong with slightly boot cut jeans as long as they are slim fit...

however...dress pants should definitely be slim and straight

loose fit pants aren't flattering on anyone

fun socks ftw. I used to mix in solid black with my patterned socks but for awhile now I've exclusively been wearing patterned socks. Basically white socks when I work out or around the house and patterned socks everywhere else (either at work or dressed to go out). At work, my socks always complement or contrast my shirt for the most part since I wear varying shades of grey. Outside of work it's the same if I am wearing jeans. If I am wearing colored chinos then I take those into consideration as well.

I have slightly boot cuts on the jeans I wear on-site when I have to wear my steel toes. All my other pants are straight and slim

definitely fine. Grey goes nicely with brown.

all kinds of places. I've gotten some from H&M, lots from Express, and then some here and there from Banana Republic, Target, Urban Outfitters, and even Kohls. Luckily socks are something that you can look for at lots of places that you might not even normally find clothes you like. I like to keep a crop of black and grey patterns (think gay with black polkas, grey and black stripe, grey and black argyle, grey and black zig-zag, and other random patterns) because they are still interesting and can work with any of my grey pants and grey or black shoes regardless of the shirt I have on. So it's nice to have something more interesting than just black to use as a neutral when you just aren't feeling the colorful ones that day for whatever reason.

Then I get all kinds of other colors and patterns: argyles and stripes to match or complement any color shirt I own since they are "classic." Then I get more modern, funky patterns and saturated colors to mix in as well (express is decent for this).

^,^^ - Even a black jacket and brown shoes? Does the shade/darkness of the jeans play into it at all?

Count me as another person in favor of "fun socks". They don't have to be anything really wild necessarily...but I just don't like wearing plain black or brown socks. I like argyle, striped socks, even solid color but something fun (yellow or blue are two I like). Really pretty much anything that's not plain brown or black. I wear khaki colored pants and brown loafers usually, so it's a little easier for me to get by wearing brightly colored socks than if I was in darker slacks and darker shoes.

Well, I'd prefer grey with brown over black and brown if you are talking some sort of formal 'jacket' paired with brown dress shoes and not a fall outerwear jacket. Are you talking a blazer, jeans, and dress shoes? I am comfortable wearing brown dress shoes with nearly any shade of grey. Personally, black and brown is kind of iffy depending on your exact outfit (but honestly most people probably wouldn't notice anyway).

For me, yes the wash of my jeans plays into my decision with clothes but it's more of a judgement call than any sort of rule. Most of my jeans range from dark to very dark and then I have a black pair and a grey pair as well so for casual shoes I tend to wear a lot of grey or charcoal based shoes, but dress shoes I wear both black and brown.

Yeah I have a problem with some of my socks falling down and not staying up. Specifically I'm thinking of Chaps socks I have. The elastic must just be worn out or something.
