I think you are missing the point. He isn't asking for advice on his LDR, he bought a plane ticket to go see her, he wants real closure and a real reason for a 3.5 yr relationship gone. He wants tww to justify his decision (whichever one it ends up being) because right now it probably doesn't feel like he can make this decision without talking it out first.

Regardless on your opinion of the validity of his relationship, he obviously thinks it is was/is real and wants an answer.

I think it's fine to go down there for "closure" or whatever.

But I'd move on regardless of what happens when you see her.

Unless she does this kind of thing once a month, then there's no use in bargaining or trying to work something out. Plus, the fact that she gave no details besides a vague "it's not going to work out" really finalizes the matter. If she wanted to stay in the relationship at all, she would have listed a specific issue that you could address: no ring, you're too far away, you leave your dirty clothes on the floor, etc...

He won't get real closure by flying out there, he'll just be out some money and still sad. She stated the reason she wanted to break it off: "she said she's afraid we aren't going to work out".

That's the only explanation you need. We like to apply logic and rationality to relationships, thinking that there's always some easy to understand reason for why things unfold like they do. Sometimes, you just don't see a significant other being in the picture 5 years down the road. It doesn't mean anyone did anything wrong or they're banging someone else, you just want to move in another direction.

It's pretty clear why she doesn't see it working out. She wants a guy that will actually be there for her. Daily phone calls are not and will never be a substitute for real intimacy.

I just wanted to say that I'm in a LDR (~600 miles) that is going well. We see each other every 3-4 weeks, and she's moving 6.5 hours closer in just over a month.

Not all long distance relationships are bullshit.

That being said, specialkay is being a dick, but brings up some good points.

May or may not be true depending on the situation. My fiancee just moved 3.5 hours away to go to grad school, but it's with the expectation that I will move up there with her as soon as I find a job there (not giving up my job here yet as I'm currently our only source of income other than student loans). A lot depends on how it was originally framed too--I don't think I'd knowingly go into/keep up a relationship that I knew was going to be long distance for multiple years. Why was you moving there not an option? Did she discuss her situation with you first, or was it just a "I'm peacing out to TX, we can keep this up long distance if you're still interested?" Seems to me that and the fact that it was never made "short distance" over that long a time frame says a lot about the future prospects of it.

At any rate it sounds moot now.
