Go on a cruise, hang out in the casino, win so much money that you pay off your cruise

^ Or do the same thing, Vegas-style ![](images/smile.gif)

Having been there twice, I have to ask, why the Azores? They're definitely cool, but I don't know that it would make my top 25, or maybe even top 50 destinations. 3/27/2013 5:59:09 PM

to all the cruise haters, have you even been on one? or two? And why the hate/what did you expect out of it? (and don't give me the paranoid fringe shit like virus pandemic/we's all gonna sink, etc. Those ships are in 24-7/365 days a year operation and incidences are rare as a whole)
Of course it's not a fucking trip to Europe, its a different type of vacation. There's the active, cram everything you can into these ten days treks across new countries, and there's the 'I'm gonna sip tropical drinks while getting waited on while in the hot tub and then go have a four course elegant dinner when I feel like it, then go to a live show in the theatre, and maybe hit the club/casino until 2 or 3 am.
Ports of call are cool, but really for me its just a chance to get out and snorkel reefs or explore old forts for a few hours in between being pampered 24/7 with no responsibilities and no tether to the stressors of phone/email/work/etc. 3/27/2013 7:59:54 PM

Even for a relax and do nothing type vacation, a cruise is down my list. I'm similarly pretty disinterested in canned, all-inclusive resorts. Even if I'm going to just lay out on the beach, dive, etc, I'd rather actually see the country, rather than stay holed up in a little cocoon of transplanted America .
I'll go so far as to say that's lame shit for lame people.]

^^ i'm the same way. I've never done an all-inclusive resort type vacation or cruise because it just doesn't appeal to me. I know plenty of people who enjoy that though. 3/27/2013 8:09:42 PM

I mean, I wouldn't be miserable on a trip like that or anything. It'd be fun. I would just FAR rather spent the money on a different kind of vacation.
Just like Applebee's has some decent food, but there's a lot of stuff, even at the same price, that I'd enjoy much more.
...or that American Idol talents are good singers and all, but Id way rather listen to Jimi Hendrix or Metallica or the Black Crowes or the Beatles or something. 3/27/2013 8:18:41 PM

I think some of y'all are missing the point. I love to lay on the beach all day. North Carolina's beaches generally work great for that. However, destination beaches are necessary when I want to lay on the beach over Christmas or spring break.
Resorts and cruises exist so you can lay on the beach when it's cold where you live, and there has never been any thing wrong with that. In fact, it's fantastic. 3/27/2013 10:40:51 PM

An international flight to lay on the beach and an international flight to explore a new country have the same impact on the environment, right? 3/27/2013 11:10:14 PM

^^^^ No, I'm saying that I'm all for "destination beaches". I'm just saying that I don't want to do it in a canned environment, where you essentially have America transplanted to a couple of square miles of somewhere warmer. That's missing half the point of travel.
Go to the destination beach, hell, do some touristy stuff and whatever, but if you're going to another country, at least see and experience the country a little bit in a non-canned, prefabricated, Americanized environment.
I'm ALL for going to Jamaica or the Virgin Islands or whatever. I'm not saying that I'd stay in some slum hostel. I'm saying that I would never, ever do an all-inclusive resort or a cruise where you never even venture beyond the confines of the resort or the off-site attractions they own/are affiliated with. That's not travel. You can do all the same cool or relaxing stuff, but actually visit the country/countries. 3/27/2013 11:37:45 PM

But, if the whole point of the trip is to enjoy the sun the same way you'd enjoy the sun if it were warm here, then why all the added emphasis on seeing the country and experiencing the culture?
And, if merely enjoying the sun is not okay to do there, then why is it okay to do here?
To be clear, I generally feel the same way as you, and I've understood everything you're saying and everybody else has been saying for this whole thread. But I don't necessarily feel comfortable telling others how they should be vacationing. And there are people that I like who "travel" a great deal on cruises, returning with embarrassing braids and all sorts of duty-free crap. Now I'm pretty self-righteous, but I just can't imagine holding some sanctimonious stance about how lame they are for not liking to vacation in a manner that I presently find to be proper. That's mean and crude. And it's usually a pretty transparent attempt at self-promotion: at this point, we've all had a chance to show how cool and sophisticated we are by putting down cruises, etc.
Finally, if you had so much experience with the world, you'd actually be cool with all different types of people, including the less adventurous folks who get really excited they got a room at the Grand Floridian at Disney World.
Man, I still wanna stay at the Grand Floridian so bad. 3/28/2013 12:20:49 AM

You got your introverts and extroverts.
You have the Tourist (introverts), who like to do things that other people have done, but stay within their comfort zones by having a stress free, lazy, but enjoyable holidays or vacations. Then there are the Travelers (extroverts), who like the sense of adventure and will work for that unique, one-off experience that no one or very few people ever enjoy. Even to them, the "work" seems to be stress free and enjoyable for them.
In either cases, there are different levels at which you can spend money, but still net the same level of happiness or enjoyment. My only case is that people be smart, shop around and save money. Do your homework when vacationing so you'll net a higher level of happiness or return on investment without coming back with buyer's guilt or remorse. Specially when vacations now day's are far and few between each iteration and pretty expensive for the average American.
It's hard to say what would be enjoyable to each individual without knowing more about them or what they like to do. 3/28/2013 5:17:17 AM
