What do you mean 80Mbps file transfer? You mean you transferred a file at 80Mbps over your intranet? At that point your harddrive speeds should be the bottleneck. Check the 'status' on your wireless adapter. I get between 600 and 800Mbps on my intranet from my laptop over 5.0GHZ AC to my router. At that point I'm coming close to having the hard drives be the bottle neck (80-120MBps).
Again judging your ISP bandwidth over a wireless connection only makes sense if your router isn't the bottleneck.
--what do you mean it's only a 100Mbps connection? That router is gigabit. You should be getting 600-800Mbps from your laptop to the router then your bottleneck will be your harddrives.

^ The ATT modem uses 2 2-pair connections into it, but where they put the router, there was only 1 cat-6 jack available. So they wired 2 of the 4 pairs as the incoming 2-channel ADSL connection, then used the other 2 pairs as the outgoing intranet connection, which goes into a switch that feeds another room. There was no patch panel available in my house (renting) to run gigabit to the other room.
My plan is to get a punch down block and rewire things so that all the wired jacks in the house can be gigabit (and PoE), but I haven't gotten that far yet.
The wireless adapter is connected at 530Mbps TX rate, so I can get much faster file transfers than what I posted above, but between the 100Mbps wired connection as the slow 5400 RPM drive i was connecting to, i'm not too worried about that right now.
I do have the Uverse Wireless TV transmitter hooked up to the Asus with IGMP enabled, and haven't noticed any performance issues with either the TV or the network, so i was pretty impressed by that.

I have gigabit fiber, and I wouldn't pay $150/month for it. I pay ~$100/month for internet + TV.
Here's the deal: it isn't currently worth $150/month because most websites can't send the data to you that fast, so you rarely fully utilize the connection. If it were cheaper…maybe.
The only time I've ever maxed out my connection has been during a speed test. Even doing something like downloading Yosemite or other large updates, it usually doesn't pull in faster than ~100-150mbps.
There's also a good chance that your current router, unless it is the latest and greatest thing out there, can't handle a true gigabit internet speed so you'd have to upgrade. MOST personal routers, even with a so-called "gigabit" internet port, can't route WAN-to-LAN at gigabit speeds. Check out this chart to see what would work best for you.

Good point. Yeah my router says ~755mbps on there.
I'm happy with 125mbps for $35/month right now on Comcast so I'll probably stick to that. I just wish the upload (12mbps) was faster. Centurylink does offer 150mbps download (with the same upload I believe) for like $95/month. Not quite sure that's worth it though. 4/24/2015 12:50:50 PM |

125mbps for $35 vs 150mbps for $95….seems like a no-brainer to keep what you've got.
My "gigabit internet" is only half-true. My download is gigabit but my upload is limited to 30mbps. Not sure why, but I've never needed it faster so I don't really care. I'm sure at some point they'll speed it up. 4/24/2015 12:57:03 PM |

Well I think 150mbps with Centurylink would have 150mbps upload too which is what I would be paying for. 12mbps upload is decent but I'd like at least 25-30.4/24/2015 1:10:00 PM |

Where are you that CL is actually rolling FTTP? The best I've seen is either their comparatively expensive MetroE or 25Mbit bonded VDSL.
Was it Colorado?

Yes Denver.
--Also it's $95 for 100mbps from Centurylink. I thought it was 125. That's too much IMO if I can get anywhere near the $35 for 125mbps I'm paying now for Comcast on my next contract.

My ISP has been retarded for the past few weeks
Speed test to their locally run speedtest server and it's 50/50
Anywhere else...it can range from 2-20 down but still 50 up...so that makes sense
Never had such widely fluctuating download speeds until recently...and the fact that it can be literally 25 times slower than my upload is just weird.
I want to believe there's a conspiracy by competing ISPs to shit on their network traffic

Suddenlink gave me 50 more em bees free of charge. I'm in their 1gb test market so I have that scheduled for the 27th. I think it's 130/month but unfortunately they only give you 650GB allotment even with that speed. I have 550GB now.

Some areas of Wake County have TWC's bump already. Cary I think is slated for October, but most people suspect it will come earlier due to ATT pressure. Google is gonna be months if not years before its a significant presence. They are still working on it in KC which was its original place. 7/12/2015 2:08:14 PM |

According to TWC Cary and East Raleigh got Maxx upgrades today. South Raleigh is scheduled for 8/18, and North Raleigh for 9/18.
AT&T laid fiber on my street, but I expect it will be another year before I can get service from them, and my area is probably too "multi-cultural" for Google to consider. I guess another two months is better than nothing. :/ 7/15/2015 6:26:29 PM |

I just had a very good experience with TWC on the phone. I guess there's a first time for everything.
I am moving, so I was getting the move taken care of. While I had her, I asked about the Maxx speed upgrade. She checked my account and said that I was eligible for the free speed bump to 50/5 for the standard internet. She said that she would activate it at my new place, and that the technician would swop out the modem to one that could handle the upgrade. There was also complete openings on Sat Aug 1st, which was surprising.
So also let me keep my internet promotion, and waived the move fees (which might be normal but it was nice to hear).
So at my new place on Aug 1st I should have the maxx standard speed of 50/5. 7/23/2015 10:15:06 AM |

Thinking of canceling my gigabit installation. I think 50Mbit/8Mbit for $80/month might be the better play since there is no cap. Or maybe just spend one month with the gigaspeedz so I can see how I basically never use it. 7/23/2015 10:59:47 AM |

High bitrate tv shows and movies always take a lot. When downloading videos or photos it's nice to have them quicker. RDP probably doesn't take a huge amount but it's nice to have enough bandwidth to do multiple things at once.

TWC Maxx just dropped here in Chapel Hill/Carrboro today. Just so happens my promotion has run out with U-Verse. So I am paying almost $70 for 15/1.5. I could spend less than that and get 200MB TWC. So do I wait for U-Verse Gigapower or dump AT&T for TWC at least until Google drops? First world problems, I know. 7/28/2015 6:42:14 PM |

This seems (kinda) like the appropriate thread for this. The wife and I are moving back to the area (Chapel Hill) from Boone. What isp should we look into? If the deal is right, we don't mind cable tv + internet, but we can also just do internet if the price is right. Also, I have my own router, but the trend seems to be to buy your own modem as well. What is the prudent combination of everything? Thanks! 7/29/2015 5:21:14 PM |

I am intrigued by the idea of buying our own modem, but am not sure which one will work best with our current router (Netgear N150 WNR1000) to get most out of the new TWC speeds if possible. 7/30/2015 6:56:08 PM |

So after doing some poking around, given the 150Mbps limit on my current router, I should just buy this modem (ARRIS / Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Wired Modem - Retail Packaging - White http://goo.gl/EM7hGl) Yes, it can handle more than double the speed of my router (see above), but I may upgrade that when it kicks the bucket. Does this seem like a reasonable setup coupled with either the new Ultimate 100 or Ultimate 200 from TWC depending on what deals they have? Thanks! 7/30/2015 9:56:41 PM |

^I think that's the recommended model on thewirecutter. I came across it multiple times when trying to find one to purchase before gigabit install. Suddenlink is leasing me a hitron CDA3-35 with 32 bonded channels. I can't even find anything like it for purchase. Maybe the modem manufacturers have agreements with cable companies not to sell to customers for a time (Like how the one you linked is white).
I figure if an 8 channel is 90 bucks and 16 is 130 then as long as I only lease for a few months I won't come out too hosed. They told me I'd have 650GB but it looks like my cap is still sitting at 550 so I doubt I'm gonna keep it. I haven't really even hit more than 30MB/s on uTorrent tho. It's overkill. 8/1/2015 12:33:58 PM |
