when I was younger, i was "against homosexuality"
but all that really meant was making gay jokes, calling everyone a faggot, enjoying girl on girl porn, while being repulsed by the idea of two dudes doing the hibbity dibbity.
Today, I'm all for letting two consenting adults do whatever they want behind closed doors, and enjoy the same benefits as straight couples.
and I still enjoy girl on girl porn, and am still repulsed by the idea of two dudes getting it on, but hey whatever grills their cheese.
Ultimately what I realized over time was that all i was truly against was the aesthetics of two dudes fist bumping with their dicks.
EDIT:
i'll aslo mention that i don't really ever call anyone a faggot anymore for the same reason i don't drop n-bombs, but i'll definitely refer to something as "being gay" which in my head has zero to do with homosexuality, and it interchangeable with something as "being retarded"

I'm against mens kissin mens, for any reason, but when womerns do it... That, uh, that seems alright.
j/k I just wanted to quote squidbillies
It has never really bothered me except when dudes would hit on me, like in a creepy way, see message_topic.aspx?topic=622930
One thing that has changed is that I never say never when questioning someone's sexuality. I have had some close friends come out that shocked me so I'm kind of desensitized to the whole shock of it. 5/16/2013 3:25:59 PM

^^^The problem of course is that you use a term that usually means "homosexual" to mean "bad" Quote : | "road trips without Jessica Simpson music" | *only if you have the usual "NO FEMMES" preference
Anyway, about 10 years ago when I first heard that some people wanted to marry people of the same sex, I was as surprised as when Forrest Gump first heard that black people wanted to go to the same state universities as white people ("They do?"). Then a couple years later, I learned that marriage isn't primarily a church-based institution, and that the arguments for same-sex marriage are all about the legal benefits accorded to married couples but not to cohabitants, so I came to support same-sex marriage, instead of the "compromise" position that I thought was so clever at the time, that the government should just get out of the business of marriage. 5/16/2013 6:55:39 PM

^There was a conversation on tdub back in 2010 about anti-gay terminology started by qntmfred and it was actually a relatively thoughtful discussion given the subject matter and the fact that it happened here in chit chat. And even just in the past 3 years there has been a lot of change for the better.
While I can understand that there might not be any deep malice behind the use of anti-gay slurs not directed at gay people, and while I'm not for any authoritative censoring, I still wasn't convinced by efforts to defend the usage in that way. Here was my contribution to that conversation:
Quote : | "I have trouble buying this argument though. That's so gay... not in a gays are bad way, but in a way that the thing I'm describing as gay is bad. You're a fag... not in a gays are bad way, but in a way that the person I'm describing as fag is bad. [no homo... can't have that bad association, not that gays are bad, just don't confuse me with a homo].
Its just that every word for gay in our lexicon has "happened" to move to a different place to mean bad, and somehow in no way reflects attitudes towards gay people.
Anyways, I hope none of this came off as queer (not in the gay way, but in the bad way), b/c I wouldn't want you to think I'm a gay wad or anything.
I might buy the argument that fag is just common slang between buddies at a bar to mean something less than or bad or dumb, if it wasn't that every word for gay is just common slang for that." |
I'm just glad that I don't hear people using the South Park cartoon as their moral compass on deciding how to use slurs any more. 5/16/2013 7:13:34 PM

It's definitely harder, but I don't think it's impossible. I think so much of it is being exposed to the LGBTQ community on an individual basis and learning to see them as individuals. I think it's a lot harder to tell someone, with whom you've had a congenial conversation, to his face that you think his lifestyle's repugnant. It's also having those same folks pop up in your family. It's a lot harder for my grandparents to take a hard, conservative stance on homosexuality when their granddaughter is bisexual. 12/19/2013 8:42:47 AM

it took a few years for my parents to shift from being against all forms of gay marriage, to 100% supporting it
my brother and i changed our views after high school and argued with them a lot. and they had some friends who turned out to be gay.

my views changed. I was never religious or anything, just ignorant of anyone different from me. I grew up in rural NC, so homophobia, racism, etc were normal to me.
After I left home and went out in the world, I saw how idiotic that shit was and changed my views. It wasn't long after I changed my views that my family did too, which turned out awesome b/c my youngest sibling (17 years younger than me) is transsexual. He's going through a lot of stuff and has told me repeatedly that he's glad to have an older brother who loves him & supports him. 12/19/2013 9:02:09 AM

My wife's aunt has been a lesbian all her life, but the family refuses to accept it. She's been in two long term relationships (both very butch ladies), but my MIL and the rest of her family is very much against it. In fact this year they tried to have an intervention with the aunt about it. Crazy shit that obviously went nowhere. I think it was one of those pray the gay out kinda things. They are very religious, almost Calvinistic. The GMIL tries to pretend that they are just "spinsters" or just two women living together to save money. Hah
That said, my view hasn't changed. I don't give a fuck what other people do, but its not for me and I still think marriage is between a man and a woman (though I could give a shit about civil unions to allow them to have the same legal rights). Obviously living in Carrboro we are exposed to a lot more alternative lifestyles and again, it doesn't really bother me. I have friends and coworkers who are gay/transgendered but that doesn't mean I'm going to treat them any different. Lot of people do shit I don't agree with, but its not my place to judge them on that.

marriage isn't a religious institution
marriages can be performed and acknowledged secularly by the state
everyone should just get over the idea that marriage is somehow sacred or religious
to answer the thread, no, my views haven't changed
all people deserve the basic human right to marry whomever they please 12/19/2013 12:14:30 PM

hmmmm Growing up I just assumed everyone had a gay uncle I don't think I ever thought it was weird or wrong. When I was in high school I had a terrible argument with my dad about homosexuality. He thinks same-sex marriage is wrong (keep in mind his brother is gay and has been with his husband for as long as I've been alive) and that gay adoption should be illegal.
To me it's never made sense to be against it. When it comes to views changing I'd say the most change I've been through has been going from just "being comfortable" to taking a stand/protesting and not being complacent with the way our society treats its citizens. 12/19/2013 12:18:22 PM

The backlash will be similar to what occurred with Chik-Fil-A.
Rednecks will watch it even more vehemently to stick it to political correctness.
A&E and the Robertson's will pocket even more money, and nobody will even remember in a month. 12/19/2013 2:15:46 PM
