the death count keeps going up
I watched it live on TV, they had a chopper chasing behind the storm, it was fucking HUGE it got so big they thought they could not see it, then they zoomed out and you could see it was like as big as the horizon. 5/20/2013 11:51:08 PM

I have been watching this live stream for footage. The chopper is up this morning and showing some CRAZY aerial shots of the damage.

Fringe benefit Emily and Joleen are easy on the eyes. Lot better than WRAL morning crew.

This event has me wondering if the local government has an obligation to provide safe, underground tornado shelters to the schools it administrates.
If you're responsible for a population of students, including their safety, and you live in an area that is highly susceptible to dangerous weather like tornadoes, is it unreasonable to expect more than just the rudimentary protection of walls? 5/21/2013 8:10:31 AM

This is still unreal to me. I spent many of times in Moore when I lived in Norman several years. I went to that Warren movie theater quite often and many of the restaurants/shopping areas just south of it. Crazy to think that neighborhood we passed on the west while traveling north on Telephone Rd. to the theater is flattened. I'm also sure the area we once had softball practice and the doctor my gf went to is pretty much obliterated to the north of that (off NW 3rd St). Luckily all the people I know out there are ok.

This is a horrible tragedy. Sometimes Mother Nature is harsh. Honestly though, I can't believe all these buildings/structures in the Mid-West don't have basements. Is there some geological reason for that? No freaking way I would want to live in an area highly susceptible to twisters without a basement.
Quote : | "I was just thinking today about how interesting that it would be to analyze the data on climate changes in the past 50 years and identify any trends with global warming. I am sure that it has been done, but I would do it right." |
There are historical records tracking hurricane frequency and intensity, as well as tornado frequency, intensity and fatalities. It's been shown there's no correlation with any of these and increased atmospheric temperature. It's a common misconception due to increased media coverage and the increasing probability of a storm hitting a populated area (since the population is ever increasing). 5/21/2013 8:19:24 AM

Yep, this is basically why they don't have basements. But plenty of people get storm shelters built on their property. Not sure the rules & regs on shelters for certain places like schools though. 5/21/2013 8:23:56 AM

it probably is addressed in new Oklahoma building codes (shelters, etc.) but the school might be an older building that was grandfathered in
and if its not in the current OK building code, I'm sure they will be added soon. 5/21/2013 8:46:20 AM

Good things are always attributed to god because people are narcissistic, self-important and arrogant. They believe god is looking out just for them.
Bad things happening shatter this notion (and hence cognitive dissonance), so to cope, they're taught to believe that god is working in mysterious ways, and that they cant possibly understand or begin to know god's ultimate plan, that there is some as yet unknowable meaning to the events, etc.

That seems pretty reasonable. My guess is that a statewide regulation would be the most effective way to require some level of shelter facilities or sturdier building codes if any broad changes are to be made. Of course whether it's local or statewide, raising the public funds to implement it is a whole other challenge. 5/21/2013 12:32:08 PM

assuming OK mirrors the IBC for their building code, they include ICC storm shelter standards and OK (and the rest of tornado alley) are in the 250mph wind speed design zone. 5/21/2013 12:40:31 PM

there's many ways to call a storm of any sort "worst," and not sure yet that this one would top any of the lists. Hell, the Joplin, MO and Tuscaloosa, AL tornadoes didn't play around. 5/21/2013 12:46:47 PM
