you can find the entire deposition online; i can't remember exactly where i found it. i read most of the important parts related to the robbery and the wedding. i haven't read her brother's deposition, though, which i imagine is more telling. i think he's the one who would be more of the smoking gun, if anyone.

i haven't looked to see if there are available depositions of the plaintiffs in the case.

yeah, i just reread the entire deposition, and based on that i couldn't conclude anything about the merits of the case. my best guess is that if someone did something wrong, then it was her brother. but her brother doesn't have deep pockets, so you sue paula deen.

She's 50% owner.

But it seems likes she really thinks that it would have been a good idea to hire only black men to serve a wedding of mostly whites, to represent a true southern wedding, and she doesn't see what's wrong with this. It doesn't make her racist necessarily, but she seems a bit clueless.

I usually don't care when people make white jokes or irish jokes, but then again none of my (living) relatives or friends of the same race were systematically persecuted because of the color of their skin, so although I'd like to say I would just laugh about a racial joke and not give a fuck, i've learned that people with different backgrounds might perceive things a bit differently. Most rational people that I know can perceive if a joke or word is mean-spirited in nature or not. (no idea about the Paula Deen situation)

That being said, we have all said or done stupid shit in our past, and the mark of someone with strong character is to at least learn from mistakes, but even better make others aware and maybe prevent them from making the same mistakes. I don't know much of anything about paula deen other than her artery clogging food is usually good (even though her Savannah restaurant is overrated), but dear lord people love jumping on a controversy and vilifying people. (let he who is without sin cast the first stone?)

my girlfriend and i are constantly making racial jokes back and forth towards each other. i think that we both just have a good sense of humor, so it's not an issue. the problem is when people apply their own standard of what is acceptable and make a single, universal standard.

there are things i say to strangers, things i say to coworkers, things i say to family, and things i say to friends. those comments may all be different, and each is based on the audience and how comfortable they are in a given scenario. it seems to me like the biggest issue isn't what you are saying, but the intent with which you are saying it. if you are intending to be rude or spiteful or derogatory, it shouldn't matter that you never use certain code words, you should still be looked at as a rude jackass.

I remember reading that ~25% of households in North Carolina owned slaves, so it's quite likely that many of our families did not directly contribute to or benefit from slavery in the way you think. I know that doesn't make them abolitionists, but it certainly offers a different perspective on things.
