I left my cushy job in Raleigh for a job making less money in San Francisco. Most people do that for the reward of having something of your own and the possible reward. The fact it was risky moving to one of the most expensive places on Earth with no contacts didn't factor into why I did it. I did it in spite of the risk.
I'm sure the Google founders logic was similar.

Founding a company isn't normal and requires a lot of risk. Working long hours without immediate possibility of financial gain and possible financial ruin vs a small but real chance in loss of life.
You also seem to have no idea of the risk in any of the things you're speaking. Russian roulette is not comparable to skydiving by at least 5 orders of magnitude. You have no idea if racing is more dangerous than skydiving it just looks scarier. 6/25/2013 5:02:11 PM

First off, where did I say risks period were bad? I didn't. Not even close. I said risks that to me outweigh the rewards aren't worth it. Thankfully, I have no need to do them. Second, we were talking about deadly risks. Not financial. Totally different. Jumping or not jumping out of plane has absolutely nothing to do with your ability or desire to take personal risks like moving for a job or starting a company. That's stupid if you think so.
But this conversation bores me, people keep saying the same things which require my same reply. Im going to go drive home shortly with my eyes closed, its EXTREEEEEMMMMMEE!!!!

Right; what we're all saying is that you don't find enjoyment and fulfillment in skydiving, or car & motorcycle racing, or flying aerobatics, or wing-walking, or backcountry skiing, or running Ironman triathlons, etc.
Whatever--nobody gives a fuck that you don't get fulfillment from these things. What people have a beef with is your derision and minimization of such pursuits when other people do find enjoyment, exhilaration, and satisfaction in them--and in addition, the fact that, as best as anyone can tell, you live a pretty mundane existence just compounds things and earns you a bunch of rolly-eyes (and some fat jokes) from those of us who live life somewhat harder.
It's not that hard to understand.

^And you've wasted a lot of your time in this thread accomplishing nothing but making yourself look bitter and trite. I'm sure everybody here understands how you feel about skydiving; to miss that mark would be nothing short of obtuse. Now...your incessant hammering home of the point says a good deal about your open-mindedness, and perhaps a little bit about your insecurity and inability to let the argument go.
All that being said, it's pretty entertaining. 6/25/2013 10:24:32 PM

There have been several times I have been done with it and others come in having to get the last word, which also includes personal attacks, so I defend myself.
Thread was dead for over an hour until Duke had to come in with his "inability to let it go" and start it up again

I just take offense to people who say airshows are for kids, people only go to see crashes, or sports are a more worthwhile advantage because a score is kept. To me flying is extreme enough. I love flying/piloting and think skydiving is nuts. I appreciate the people who can do it, but with a fear of heights, skydiving is the ultimate OMFG to me. Just like guys who free climb, or people who scale buildings, tightropw walk across the Grand Canyon, etc. it does not have to be a sanctioned sport with a score to me to understand, appreciate and enjoy it, even if I think they are nuts to do it. 6/26/2013 5:30:29 AM

Airshows were cool when I was 8, then I turned 9. Adults go to airshows to see planes crash, and to hit on single moms. Walking on the wings of a flying plane is not extreme, its stupid. What irks me, almost more than what Duke said, is jaybee has no idea the planning and preparation that goes into any of it. He also has no idea what the risks are and if they can be mitigated by training or even common sense. Pile that on lack of imagination about the fun parts and why people do it and its like a dumbass sandwich.
Everyone has a risk threshold. I know exactly what mine is and he probably does things daily that are more dangerous than some jumps I made. I know a single tandem skydive is way less dangerous than smoking or drinking soda. 6/26/2013 8:49:03 AM
|
Jaybee1200 Suspended 56200 Posts user info edit post |
You still don't get it. People do things like smoking in spite of them being dangerous. The main attraction for them is NOT that it could kill them down the road. That's stupid. The danger is a side effect or consequence. It's not the main draw or essential. If smoking killed no one, more people would do it. As people in this thread have noted, the extremmmmmme things wouldn't be as fun without that danger (sky dive vs air tunnel) so it's not a consequence, it's essential to the event. Of course its not the ONLY element, but the "oh shit, this is scary" is part of it. So, what I am saying is that I am glad that I feel no need to intentionally do shit for the purpose of it being dangerous. Maybe when I was 18 and shit but now it just doesn't do it for me. Would much rather take a plane to visit Paris for example than walk on a wing of a plane from the 20s in a field in Greensboro.
Oh and motherfucker said "soda". GTFO

I've said every time that's horse shit. That is not why people skydive; the challenge, learning to keep cool in intense situations, visuals and joy of flying are. A first time jumper may do it for the risk but as ive said a first time jumper is in minimal danger. That's just one part of how idiotic you've been in the shit spewing from the mouth. 6/26/2013 9:34:07 AM

so you dont think a primary element of wing walking is the "oh shit! that person could fall and die?" Instead its, "look at her technique, that's solid! I bet she has a great view from up there, oh look, and eagle is following the plane, thats awesome."

I went skydiving because I heard it was an exhilirating experience. I never once thought, "this is so awesome because there is a chance I could die."
Sometimes I'm driving in really bad weather and I hit a patch of water and momentarily lose control. There's a chance I could die, it is exhilirating...but it is not awesome. I would not voluntarily drive high speeds through patches of water.

I bet it's a lot of fun and thats it. In this one sensational incident it provided a "news" worthy event instead of something actually informative about the risks and danger involved. How many Wingwalkers die in a year vs how many are active wing walkers? How many wing walks does one do? Was the pilot current and lucid or were they up all night doing blow? These are the questions that would illuminate the true danger instead of omg fire danger Darwin. 6/26/2013 9:43:52 AM

I just said the freefall was awesome. After the ripcord pulled was kinda "meh"...nice view and all, but not much exhiliration. Still a good chance of dying (which would have made it AWESOME by your standards)...but it did nothing for me. Plus the harness was pulling and it was a little painful.
I liken these activities to doing drugs. You do it to get a high. Sure...there are some activities where "I might die" goes through the person's head. But so much preparation goes into these things to make the chance of dying miniscule.
You're losing (or trolling) this thread big time. We all do the "normal" things that you do to "get joy out of life". We like these things as well. But sometimes people want to do a little extra. Doesn't mean they have a death wish. 6/26/2013 10:00:12 AM

There's a saying, "you leave your fear in the plane". Anytime you have nervousness in the plane it's gone with the first blast of wind.
The difference between these things and skydiving and related activities is that skydiving has barriers to entry for the too incompetent and evolutionary checks built in to remind yourself to be safe. You don't have the same fear with most drugs. 6/26/2013 10:18:40 AM
