^It becomes immediately and drastically different once it becomes a hit-and-run.

Stories like this make me sad but at the same time very grateful. I have done way worse walks like walking drunk through the streets of ghetto NOLA and sleeping on the side of the road blackout. Think stuff like this makes you realize how dumb you really were

When I was driving to work yesterday (on 40E), I was wondering why there was so many cops and CCB officers on the side of 40W. Creeeeepy!!! This is really sad. I wonder what really happened.

I feel like a drunk driver that hit him. Maybe one of those soy bean trucks hit him and didn't know it...

Yeah I was driving on that area of 40 right at 4 oclock when all the cops had just arrived. Thought it was strange to see that many for what didnt appear like any sort of major wreck or anything. I do think I saw a car sitting there with a fucked up front end though but I was driving by pretty fast.

I've walked from downtown to near Crossroads once (to apts I used to live at), but I think I was "sober" enough to walk a generally safer route that what that guy chose.

From downtown to lineberry area was $8 last time I took a cab like a month ago.

I drink a LOT. I have never been so drunk that I wanted to walk 5+ miles. If you don't have enough money to take a cab then you don't have enough money to drink downtown in a different city. Well if he wanted his gf to feel sorry then he succeeded I guess...

middle of downtown to cameron village is usually around 8 buckazoids also.

i've walked from my old apartment at kensington to the office to get my car after halloween a few years ago which was about 3.5 miles. it wasn't a fun walk and it was actually pretty dangerous at times.

if this kid was wasted and walking along main roads or highways, all it would take for him is one stumble to get waxed by a car. considering he was under emotional duress and probably drank increasingly large amounts of alcohol afterwards, it was a setup for disaster.

i don't take cabs often, so correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't cabs usually about $4, plus about $2 per mile? Based on that, a cab ride from raleigh to apex would have been about $36. Definitely not worth dying over, but sober hindsight is 20/20.

And as someone else mentioned, don't we all know a friend that has got black-out drunk and wandered off on a few occasions?

Okay guise, I'm tired of seeing y'all fight and argue, so I called a cab company and was quoted $65 from the Oxford to Apex

If he took a bunch of shots before leaving the bar there is a good chance he got progressively more drunk and disoriented for the next hour, presumably too drunk to call a taxi or his friends for a ride or to tell directions.

If he was arguing with someone at 1:30, and then passed out in a bush in front of Memorial Auditorium soon thereafter, then he probably did go back inside and drink more before the bars closed. If he was already that drunk when he was arguing with his girlfriend then yeah the girlfriend's gonna feel even worse about leaving him.

I live off Trailwood now and the cab ride is usually between $15-$20. I doubt if I was drunk or sober I'd be willing to pay $65 for a cab ride to Apex. Wonder if he was gonna stay at someone's place who lived in Raleigh, but then when his girlfriend left he just said screw it and started his blackout walk home.

i have done some stupid shit in the past, but always found a cab and got to where i needed to go. 40-50 dollars pales in comparison to this, and its pretty fucked up to do this to your loved ones over some stupid argument with a girlfriend.

I cant talk shit about the guy for getting so drunk he was self destructive, I have been guilty of that on multiple occasions.

I will say on pretty much every occasion my friends or SO got me back to the house safely. That is pretty fucked up everyone he was with abandoned him.

I dunno, sounds like he got completely shit faced every time he went out. Maybe they were fed up with his alcoholism? Of course, a better plan of action would be not to go out with him at all. Water under the bridge now, though.

How about it is better for a driver (assuming he/she was drunk) to go home and sober up, then turn themselves in... than it would be for them to call 911 right away and get caught inebriated

Are you asking if a murder charge is better than a hit and run charge?

WRAL currently has two links to this story on its main page.

The first is titled: "Missing Apex Man Killed in Hit-and-Run"
The second is titled: "Family of missing man encouraged by tip from Shaw students"

Good job WRAL

I remember from another story of a hit&run with a death that it is better (from a sentencing standpoint) to leave the scene and sober up before turning yourself in vs staying at the scene and get caught drunk. You have more of an incentive to leave the scene than to stay and help

"Police said it appears that Weston Vandemerwe was the victim of a hit-and-run crash, but as of Wednesday, they still had no description of the vehicle that hit him or any possible witnesses.

According to a wreck report, investigators believe Weston Vandemerwe was walking along the highway when a car merging from the Hammond Road on-ramp hit him. His body was found 95 feet from the point of impact.

Family members said they believe he was walking home.

"Weston was in a situation where he should not have been and it's over. You can't go back and reach back and change anything for him," Wayne Vandemerwe said. "Just knowing that he was on his way home, it's just hard to describe, but it happened and he will be missed.""

Reports say he was walking home to Apex, but his body was found between Hammond and S. Saunders? That's not exactly on the way from DTR to Apex.

If he was drunk enough to walk on the goddamn interstate in the middle of the night from Raleigh to Apex, he probably wasn't thinking clearly enough to take the most direct route.

The farthest I have ever walked blacked out was from Trailwood Valley to Kaplan, & from Ruckus to Kaplan.

I came to remembering about halfway back from Trailwood Valley and remember thinking in my drunken state that I have a black suit on and I am walking in the dark, better watch for drunk drivers and stay on the sidewalk. I hope I was thinking that too while I was blacked out walking up Lineberry, Trailwood, and Thistledown.

One walk home from Ruckus I do not remember at all, it was the night the canes won, I remember trading my keys to the bartender for the last few shots. I am not sure the route I took home but somehow got muddy...which makes no sense because there is a sidewalk from the front door of ruckus that goes all the way to my house.

More likely, as skaterjaws said, someone was going fast, probably thought he hit a small animal (for all we know he could have been barfing or crawling) and kept going.

No one has said we went that far flying. He could've been on top of the car, dragged along, or could've stumbled that far after impact.

I would hope so since it is the interstate. Nothing is more dangerous that merging while going 45, or less. The whole point of the ramp is to have time to speed up, or slow down when entering and exiting.

A Eulogy for Weston
When we went to write a eulogy about Weston we drew a blank. How do you define someone who brightened the lives of so many in just a few words?
The truth is you can’t... Weston was more than just a friend or a family member or even a brother, he was a phenomenal human being.
It doesn’t matter if he was on the golf course, scoring goals, hanging out with Luke Wilson, or running around PB’s charming the ladies….. His impact was incredible and unique to each of us.
He showed us the value of a smile and a laugh, taught us to always be a bigger and better man, and reminded us to live life to the fullest
His ability to instantly light up a room, make new friends, and exemplify brotherhood made him the envy of each and everyone of us.
His dedication to friendship was impeccable; he always put the needs of others before himself. He was always the first call we made in a time of need and always came through.
No one else will ever be like Weston, it is impossible to duplicate the sincerity and trustworthiness he projected on to everyone around him. You could sit all day in silence with him and be comfortable enough to not say a word. His presence spoke volumes
Even though he may have been a few inches shorter than many of us, we always looked up to him. He truly is a legend for all time."

So if you hit something, you have to pull over to check to see what it was?

If I'm in my lane, I'd probably just wonder what it was, be glad I was okay, and keep driving--animals and stuff pop out all the time.

Do you routinely hit man-sized objects with your car? When you do, do you just keep driving?

Do you by any chance drive a Tahoe or Suburban?
